I won't be able to get a table this year either but maybe some other time when I start getting prints of my works myself. In the meantime I'm gonna enjoy what a Con has to offer ((has never been to one before >,>;))
So far my best guesses on guests this year are Ai Kawashima, Utada Hikaru, and/or Hyde n Kaz but that's what I'm getting out of the hints that are being dropped here and there.
@Elves
I voted for the taxi chick (which WON, so I was relieved that my tastes weren't COMPLETELY off, judging by the fact I didn't even make the finals). BUT your monkey was so good that I knew it would be among the ten finalists already. And it happened that it was one of the more originals. I DID like the cat in the yukata though too!
I hope you can come too!! I got to meet some fellow Otaku last year there and it was awesome.
One of these days, I'm going to have my own table in the artist alley. Probably not this year though...I'm working on doing a whole bunch of artworks specifically for selling at cons and I need to get prints and such.
And yeah, I'm like you...I tend to spend most of my time just looking around at other tables. lol!
Ooh, that workshop sounds very cool, I hope I get to see it :D
How many people are planning to be in the artist alley? I would but I spent so much time last year at panels and shopping that I know I would never be at my table. ;)
Awesome! I'm going to be holding a workshop on coloring in Photoshop too. We'll have to meet up! I'm going to be cosplaying again with a group and I want Adam to cosplay too but I don't think he will.
When I think of the word "mascot" I think of a single character like Mickey Mouse for Disney or Ronald McDonald for McDonalds...that's what I did when coming up with the mascot this year as well as the year before. I don't think they're looking for background per se...rather something CAN be included along with the character mascot itself to help emphasize it. Hence with mine with the Japanese snow monkey, I added the "Big Apple" behind him to represent NYC while others added the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty, etc.
Both years before this contest, the characters were chibi and/or chibi-ish so I don't think they choose based on whether it's "cute" but which they think best can represent both NYC as well as the mascot for NYAF.
As to the text thing...I do believe they don't want font in there because when I've attended NYAF in the past, they have the mascot all over the place on banners and posters and what-not and most of the time, the mascot is faded in the BG and there's text over top of it listing events and workshops and such. So, if you were to put text along with your mascot, it may make it hard to read text put over top of it.
That's my guess anyway but it also may be due to copyright reasons since some downloaded fonts off the internet are copyrighted against being printed and publicized without having to pay for them first.
I feel a contest's main theme is the surprise and making artists go into the dark so there is creativity allowed in it. It wouldn't be a fun contest if it was primarily decided on what they were looking for- because I'm sure they don't know what they are till they are actually judging. c:
eh i had some questions about the text thing too, but after thinking about it... I read it more like we arent allowed to used texts that we downloaded off the internet...say like a font or something. to use a font practically every computer has, such as Trebuchet, thats hardly breaking copyright laws...but thats just how I took it *shrugs*
and well...on another sence, using a logo for a company holding the contest probably wouldnt really make them feel like you're stealing because it IS for them. orz
Yeah, to me, a mascot is simply a character that is meant to represent something. It's not a poster design. I designed mine based on the idea that a mascot contest is a character design contest - and it sounds like a lot of others did the same. I don't mean to sound like a sore loser either - far from it, as those finalists are incredible artists and deserve to be there - but some clarity next year would be nice.
Looking at the finalists this year, it almost seems as though they wanted to get away from the cutesy chibi thing altogether, but never told the rest of us...
And I agree - I thought the rules said something about obeying copyright laws - so does this mean there's an exception when it involves NYAF itself (such as its own logo being used by an artist)? At least I have a whole year to work on several different kinds of entries for next year if I want... although it looks like I better find a way to get Photoshop... I wonder if Photoshop Elements would do...
Last year, the winner was a chibi, so I doubt that's why they didn't pick yours. Though I do think they should be more specific in their rules. I add backgrounds to my pieces, because I feel they are empty without them; however every time I do so, I can't help but wonder if I won't be considered (apparently, bg has no effect, as I've been finalist both times). It makes me wish they gave a little more clarification on some of the rules. I don't like how some of the mascots have logos and text, even though the rules say not to use them. I worked hard NOT to include those things in mine! (I suppose I don't have much room to complain, I just wanted to let you know that I can definitely see where you're coming from.)
The sponsor is the one who chooses the finalists, right? Was the sponsor this year the same as the others?
And I'm sorry if I sound like a sore loser to everyone because I know even then I might not have been picked, but I honestly feel like I wasted an entire week of my time on a drawing that was probably overlooked because it wasn't the style that the sponsor had in mind - I drew a chibi, but not one of the finalists has a character that's super deformed. It's frustrating to wonder if yours was ignored because you didn't meet unspoken requirements.
If it been reversed and they did want simplistic, I'm sure the finalists would feel the same. We shouldn't have to submit the same image multiple times; with/without text or background, full/half body, chibi, etc.; yet half of them have text and/or the NYAF logo, and more than half have backgrounds. And was my picture or others, like the one with the twins, disqualified for having a minor character to balance it out?
Again, a clarification would be really nice - I'm not asking for them to redo the judging, the finalists are all truly wonderful and deserve their spots - I'm not going to be very motivated for this next time around if I figure my chances are 50/50 just to have it looked at before I even put anything down on paper, or that I have to draw several entries to suit every taste.
Again though, congratulations to all the winners!!! I can't even begin to guess which one was chosen at the end, they're all so good <3 :D
If I had the chance I'd give a vote to every finalist there because each entry was down-right awesome. I was truly glad to be a finalist but I don't mind who wins from here on out because it looks like a fair game to me. I think the 10 of us should take a group picture together if the majority of us are going to the Con. That would be neat and I'd love to meet you guys :3
I won't deny I mentioned that "OH MY GOD I'M NUMBER 2!!" very loudly because of excitement xD
But yeah I didn't like threaten anybody or anything like that. My mom might have... but she's... my mom xD I dunno.
I was only at SakuMatsu for like two hours total so i don't think I coulda done too much damage.

Well, okay then, as long as you weren't pressuring others to vote for yours then and only there for your family then that doesn't bother me. It doesn't matter to me who wins but I just want the winner to win it fairly. You know what I mean?
Haha, I understand your point perfectly.
No offense taken or anything, I saw a lot of people were voting for your monkey critter =3
In the end I was only around the voting table with family to vote, I hung around for a while talking to some people but who they voted for was entirely up to them. (The famz wanted to go see more cherry blossoms and the samurai fighting which was excellent.)
Good luck to everyone though =3

I gotta agree...although I'm honored I'm a finalist it is kinda frustrating to know that she was personally there able to tell people to vote for her. None of us were able to do that. I know when I attended the NYAF the first year and there was that big doujinshi contest and I was a finalist, I was not there where the voting was telling people to vote for my piece. I don't like to persuade others and not pressure them to vote for my piece. I wasn't even in the same room where the judging took place! I still ended up winning but at least I know that I won because people truly liked my piece and not because I was begging them to vote for me.
Sorry, Emm, you're a sweetie but it's not too fair to the rest of us what you were doing.
I don't think the first one matters much, but I know I really enjoyed being at the festival and marketing the contest.
I'd have to say I probably had an advantage by being there, as well as being very loud.
Meeting Peter was awesome too, I got some insight on stuff from him while we were talking.
I don't think you'll get much of an advantage from the first one, since it seems like a lot of the pieces they select vary in popularity. However, I'm pretty sure the second can be pretty helpful, which must be frustrating for all the finalists who aren't able to attend.
Is there an advantage to
first: having been on this site for a while and having friends to favorite your work so it gets pushed to the top
second: being able to go to the festival and trying to get people to vote for your picture? lol
???
I'm just wondering XD
Tell me...on the rules, I can't use text, logo or using someone stuff like Anime Festival words. I read it. I change my artworks. And now I saw one or two in the top 10 photo who has it??? I don't get it. Did I missing something? :<
Yeah, I agree with you too. I went with the simplistic approach based on the last two years' winners. The other thing I'm a little confused about is that a few of the finalists didn't seem to fit the theme of the contest as well as many of the other entries that were drawn just as well. I do think that the anime/NYC theme could've been represented much better. I personally think only about half of them really nailed the theme. It would be nice to know for next year what they are looking for, like backgrounds, character types, etc...
I do think they should give clearer instructions about just what they're looking for. Whether or not text is usable, whether they prefer backgrounds or not, ect. I've been a finalist in the past two contests so I can't really complain, but I think it would help everyone out if they gave us a little more of a clear understanding. Are they more likely to select a full body character? Would they like their logo shown with the mascot? Easily answered questions. I know I'm a person who likes to cover all of his bases. :P
(This is kinda random, but did you guys notice that all of the selected finalists with the exception of the monkey are female mascots? The monkey could be too,there's just no knowing. XD Just an interesting little note, since I much preferred the male mascot I created.)
I also agree with Davalimar.
It is really confusing and hard to judge based on the whole submitted art works and the finalists works at the Sakura Matsuri today.
Secondly, What I'm really disappointed about this challenge is many of submitted entries are not 100% original, including some on finalists (though I won't mention which one is derivative.) I voted for my favorite, but when I saw some works among the 10 and noticed some are not original, I felt really bad, hard to describe though. lol
Well, good work on everybody who participated for the challenge!!!

I'm curious after seeing this year's finalists what they were looking for in this contest. Chibizilla from last year was fairly simplistic with no background, but this year's selection is all pretty elaborate and more than half of them have backgrounds (which to me seems more like a logo than a mascot - not that I'm complaining, but it confuses me). I'm just looking for what I need to work on for next year, so any clarification would be appreciated. :)
Yes, it definitely was very wonderful to go there in person, instead of idly counting the minutes during an online poll.
I really enjoyed meeting Peter Tatara and Ali T. Kokman there,(His bow-tie was ever excellent)They were very affable people indeed!
If you saw me there, I was the girl in the white skirt yelling at people to vote for number two xD
Wow it was a great selection today (mine did not make it, but I can understand why, judging from the other great images)! It was a liberating feeling to actually GO somewhere to see them, instead of simply clicking online.

I went on Saturday, these are the finalists from the voting table
The one in the corner is the white monkey in the Nippon shirt.
Hope this helps =3

After looking at all the other entries I feel a bit discourages >__>
But I can't wait till we find out the results DX!!!
Gud luck everyone :3
I hope we find out soon >_<
I'm pretty sure they're looking at the submission time, so if you got it in before midnight, you should be okay. I submitted mine on around midnight of Tuesday and it didn't show up on the site until 4 P.M. on Wednesday.
um, so this is my first time submitting art to this site. I didn't know that submission will not get posted instantly.
So here is the question. Eventhough the submission didn't appeared on the site, will the entry be accepted as long as it was submitted before the 12am of 30th? Or is it must be on the website by the midnight? I didn't know about this site~ TAT;;; If I did, I would have submitted earlier.
I wouldn't sweat the sizes too much, if you're a finalist or winner we might request a bigger size from you, but for the sake of judging just submitting a "big" version (our max is 1500 wide by 2000 tall) is fine
What is the minimum size that the drawing we submit has to be? All it says in the guide is 300 DPI. I do my drawings by hand but my coloring digitally, so for the sake of disk space the picture might be 1500x1500 but only 100 DPI, so on paper the drawing goes from 15"x15" at 100 DPI (which is fairly large) to 5"x5" at 300 DPI (obviously much smaller)... I don't really remember how many places I saw Chibizilla last year besides the schedule packet, but if you're going to make a big poster out of this somewhere I probably don't want to send a 5" picture. :P
Text is 100% optional, remember this is a mascot, it's not a logo. The winning entry could easily not have NYAF written anywhere, likewise there could be an entry with the mascot wearing like an NYAF shirt. I don't think it'll have a huge impact.
Is text allowed at all? I was a little confused after reading the contest rules, and am just looking for a little clarification. For example, if we include writing in it, that isn't actually text, does it count? Would it be beneficial to include "NYAF" on it? Just want to clear a few things up.
When you look at some of the other entries, they provide an original size but only uploaded a smaller file. So upload a smaller file and keep the larger file on your computer. If theO need it, they will ask you for it later on.
I have a question. We need to have the files at least 300 DPI, but what of the file size is too big to submit here? Don't they have to be really big for printing considerations?

I voted for my favorite, but when I saw some works among the 10 and noticed some are not original, I felt really bad, hard to describe though.

@Ace11:

Are you going to be posting a list of the finalists, or will we only know who the final winner is? Just curious.

@Davalimar:
I wouldn't sweat the sizes too much, if you're a finalist or winner we might request a bigger size from you, but for the sake of judging just submitting a "big" version (our max is 1500 wide by 2000 tall) is fine
Davalimar
Otakuite | Posted 04/27/09 | Reply

@BloodRedArab:
Text is 100% optional, remember this is a mascot, it's not a logo. The winning entry could easily not have NYAF written anywhere, likewise there could be an entry with the mascot wearing like an NYAF shirt. I don't think it'll have a huge impact.

Otakuite++ | Posted 04/25/09 | Reply
