the colors are not crapy you just don't konw how to add light and shadow. Try this right now you have base colors, use your illustrator or phtoshop if you have it, and select the base colors, after which chose a slighty darker version of the base color. This well be your shadow color. these is for the darker parts of the character body where the light won't go. Next is the high lights, to get that follow the same steps as for the shadow color only except for choosing a slighty darker color, choose a lighter one. this will be your high light color, this color falls on the parts of body where the light hits the character.
