Do not be afraid to get more layers on them. I have to add a lot of layers but you seem to have it off to a tee!

I love this pic- espesh the birds. Youre doing fine with Photoshop, you have your own unique style and thats a good thing ^^ If you really want to change that, look at some of the tutorials around the web- thats what I did ^^
