This brings to mind the Yin and the Yang; however, there appears to be a negation on either side. We have heat or light on one side, while on the other side we have cold and dark. My interpretation of that problematic negation is that it acts a type of regulator, so that one of the halves does not dominate the other half. The yin/yang relationship is cyclical, so the negation serves to keep the cycle in play. Very thoughtful piece, indeed.
