i use smooth bristol paper cuz its thick enough to hold the marker ink. but the blending, you have to practice you dont just get the handle of it cuz of the paper XD.. just practice different strokes ande everything :3

there actually are lefty violins. they just arent common. the strings are in the same order of pitch going from front to back which means they are in the reverse order if you were to hold the two violins up going the same way... and the bow is held in the left hand. so technically you got it right. your violin player just has a lefty violin.
