OH so that's what you meant.... Yeah. I hate that. But what can ya do.. I have the perfect sketchbook with me and all but it's full. Completely full. I have to get a new one but it's so out of the way. I don't even know if it's still in stock.
I also keep my more personal sketches to myself. But lately, I've been doing much practice so it's all okay to present. :]
I have a sketchbook without ring binders and it gets on my nerves when I scan it because the page bends towards the left side, which appears as dark colour gradients >_< I saw something similar with yours, lol.
None of my sketchbooks have the quality I want =( Most of them are small and the pages fold quite easily. I use them only for rough sketches or drafts, usually of original characters in the making =P They're quite personal, so I never take them out for display here.
I'm glad that you see what I was talking about. xD
And that's a pretty descent reason for not using a sketchbook. I just use them because they are very convenient for traveling display. The sketchbook I currently own and use is a ring binded sketchbook. The paper is supposedly all-purpose, but it gets very wavy when I use color pencil or any type of wet media. :(
The sketchbook I filled up before this one though was brilliant. The pages were smooth and soft like that of expensive 100+ bright computer paper for ink jet printers. No lie. AND it was perforated. lolol I got it from Barnes and Nobles. This one was a gift. ^^d
Oh and I'm getting ready to throw a contest. If your interested, definitely give it a peek. It's my Final Fantasy Creation Contest. (::*Is using Wii now so getting the link is impossible*::) But the link's in my portfolio. :D
No prob ^^ The cleaning took me just over a minute so it didn't take much of my time. But of course, such a rush job would mean I had to ignore the dirty parts close to the lines itself. That can be easily cleared with a small Eraser tool, but carefully erasing it would definitely take a while, like I did with my latest artwork.
I think I can understand why you gave up, hahah! xD The second I used Auto-Levels, I was like "Woah!" when I saw all those funny stuff appearing, lololol.
I own a few sketchbooks but I hardly use them anymore. I prefer using A4-sized pieces of printing paper to draw because it's clean and easy to scan ^^ I also find sketchbooks uncomfortable because of the elevation due to its thickness. I'm guessing that yours doesn't have those ring binders, because the centre fold thing was quite obvious =P
Hey, you got a LOT further than I did when I tried to clean it up. So much noise.. I gave up. But hot damn~! It looks like I could print it out, outline it, scan it back up, color it, and call it a day! xD
After messing around with the original in Photoshop like you said, I've learned how to use those options to get something very similar to what you have here. I actually did the same thing with the most recent submission of mine. ^^d So your advice was a big help. Thanks~!
p.s. [The paper is pretty thin in my sketchbook. Gomenasai...]

I tried cleaning up your pic. And, yeah, I realised it's a little hard @_@ I suppose this is drawn in a sketchbook? Because I can see some other stuff drawn behind it.
That's strange, I usually increase the brightness in order to get rid of dirty areas...
Anyway, I guess I should let you see my cleaned-up version. I used Auto-Levels, then increased the brightness/contrast a little, used Eraser tool, then increased the brightness by a bit again to hide the dirty areas. Click on the link below =)
Uhm, I did try messing around with the Levels and the Contrast. Brightness and Darkness levels too. It makes the picture more clear, yes, but it also adds a terrible amount of noise to it. When I scan them up first on my computer, I lower the brightness level to -50 beforehand on my scanner so that it's visible. If I don't, you can't see the drawing. That's my problem, I suppose.

I find chibis difficult because I'd have to squeeze in all the tiny details into their tiny bodies...
You did great here though ^^ I love their expressions.
Talking about increasing the contrast of your pic, did you try out the method I suggested back when I replied to your guestbook sig in my portfolio? You should give it a shot =)
