In case you wanted to see the difference. So I can try to remember what I did. XD I used white at a low opacity with a brush that has rough edges. So I recommend experimenting with brushes and making your own as well.
I also duplicated the layer. Then with the top layer, I went to filter>blur>gaussian blur. You don't need to blur it a lot, maybe at 0.4. And then set that layer to vivid light or a different light and lower the opacity a lot. It seems to give it a sort of glowy-like look.
Then I believe I added a new layer and filled it with blue, setting that layer to Exclusion and lowering the opacity of that. That part is probably where the sepia-ness came from.
I don't really use burn/dodge unless working with gold. But you can experiment what it does when set to lighten/darken/midtones.
I'm still learning photoshop as well, so I don't know too much, but I do hope to help in what I have learned so far. :)

And no, I have not seen the artwork of Spice and Wolf's endings, much less know what that is. *goes to google it* XD

Well.. If it helps, my goal is to be able to color along the lines of something similar to your avatar. Did you notice the hair? At the top, there are many different shades of brown. Not to mention highlights. I was wondering if that was achieved with the Burn and Gradient tools. Also, does the gradient tool lift colors like that? I also like the overall tone of the picture. It's all Sepia-like. I've always been attracted to smooth coloring like that.

Have you seen the artwork from Spice and Wolf's endings?

haha! That was like my friend. She and I were painting and everything she did was a huge test and the painting came out marvelous. We think that when she hit her head on the pad, it just sparked something.

Oh my! Really now. I may turn this into a little project then. It'll take some time but it'll be interesting. If someone were to ask me to make that avatar of mine again from scratch, I'd have no clue where to start. lmao I did everything on whim and didn't take notes. :P

With the animate function, I might try to make a new avatar. Like where it switches to different images. Uhm.. some members already have avatars like that involving their own works. It's a nice idea. Thanks a lot, Annie.

If you want to animate in photoshop (if you don't already know how), use the different layers. Have you ever made a flip book? That's how you could do it and then when you save it, go to file>save for web then click the box that says "animate."
haha, then you can add all sorts of blinking letters and whatnot.
But I will say, your avatar looks fantastic!

This looks great! I wouldn't have guessed it was done with Photoshop because it looks like you used markers or something. Nevertheless, it still looks really good! I like his eyes and the details in the shirt, i.e. the folds and shadows. *jealous*

Oh yeah~! That's right. A few months back, I was really into the web design stuff. Customizing myO Homepage from corner to corner... I really had no life. xD But anyway, I was also doing icons then. I was a pitiful amateur but I did do just that--download a texture and paste it to a new layer. I've forgotten most of my skill in the area I once prospered in but with the advice you've given, I now remember one method of making an icon. Thank you very much. ^^d

Uhh.. I'm not too good with the whole fancy-shmancy icon stuff, but one thing you could do is make a "texture" on a new layer. If you don't know how to make textures, you can paste a texture from deviantart (just search "texture" and choose one you like), as a new layer. Then change the layer opacity to a lower number, or even change the colors and stuff.
If you use textures from deviantart, remember to say where you got the textures from. :>
Er... I'm not exactly sure how to do all that on photoshop since I'm a gimp user... >_>; Sorry if I'm no help at all. xD;;
