In Japan, cats sound the same as they do in America. xD But the sound that Japanese people here is nya instead of meow. Sounds and sound effects are heard differently in different countries.
Other examples (English / Japanese):
Boom / Don (sound of explosion)
Squeek / Chu (sound that mice make)
Smooch / Chu (Sound of kiss)
Bark Bark / Wan Wan (Sound that Dogs make)
