Using colored pencils and regular pencils together can give your picture a washed-out, grey effect. (The graphite smears and smudges when you color over it.) One thing that can help is inking your drawing. After you draw it in pencil, trace over your lines with a pen or black marker. Let the marker dry, then erase the pencil underneath. That will give you a really clear, bold outline—almost like a coloring book! That way it's easier to color without messing up your lines.
