I think this is very cute! I love her big eyes and doll like body.
What kind of markers did you use to color this? I think that, even if you were using the most basic of markers such as; crayola, or rose art. I think you would have been able to get a good amount of tones from what you had. Every time you use marker, no matter what it is, if you wait for the first base to dry you can always re color over it and make it darker(to an extent). Using this technique will help with adding shadows to help bring out all the ripples and frills of her cute little dress. Also it would create a more dynamic picture.
I really love the pose you gave her. It's very cute. I like the fact that there is actually some movement going on here. Those string work nicely, but I don't think it was right to have them extending off the page. It kind of leads the viewers eyes to an instant "plop" and get right on to the next one. You want to get the viewer to see all over the page and have their eyes always coming back and around.
Very cute work! I can't wait to see more. And it must feel good to know that the person you dedicated this picture to, really loved it.
