i dont think you can ever go wrong with addind more strands in hairs
just mentally set yourself a..a.. "border" for the hair, so you wont end up with humongus afro, and just.. draw strands going in like.. a wavies-ish natrul way..

i think it's easier to practice dtrawing hair strands by trying to draw your own hair style
so.. e.g., you have straight hair, then look into the mirror, and study how your hair overlaps, bends, and cover your skull
and after you practice a bit, you'd move on to other hair types

so, when you're waiting at bus or something and youre bored, you can stare at people'shair and see how the hair goes about their head
and imagine how you're draw that down

lol, i'm giving advice that i should follow myself XD
not completely sure if it works
but it sounds logical enough to me, if i had better eyesight i'd try it

My dad says I need to practice at it more, so I started with realistic people.

I get what you are saying about the hair. I felt like I needed to add more strands in...but didnt want to mess it up haha

oh wow, for a first try at realism, it's very good!!
the eyes and mouth and all that are all very nice
i mean, a lot of people who's used to drawing anime style tend to be too nervous to draw the entire lip shape like that XD

the only suggestion i'd say for your next realism portrait is that, for the hair, in real life, there tends to be more strands and less bunched together (unless its all glued together by gel XD)
and i meant as in, the ends.. like, by your shading, i can tellthe strands and stuff, but the er.. outline(?) is too straight and one-lined(?) lol
