Whoa! I just saw this and HAD to comment, this is so perfect as a spooky halloween picture! The moon is dead freaky... I don't like moons with faces at the best of times but that one is just *shudders* pretty awesome though.
I love the lighting and clouds too. How long did this take? Fantastic job :3
Woah! I didn't know you could do that with a brush. :O I don't know a lot of the tricks and effects of photoshop. I think customizing your airbrush will really work well..hmm I need to try that
I really can't wait for this tutorial of yours! I'm sure I can learn a lot from it. You can also learn quite a bit from making an effective tutorial too. :D There's a lot of tutorials out there that teach coloring and stuff, but one day I want to make a big huge tutorial that covers details and tricks and different ways to do things. I think it'd be extremely helpful to other artists C:
Yeah Having a big file can really help with details and stuff. I don't remember what the original size was....probably something like 1900 pixels by 2250 pixels or something but yeah really big. Then I sized it down for theO and it lost a LOT of the detail. like for the stitches I used a soft brush for shading then used a hard brush to erase right by the lines of the stitches making it look like it was popped up a little because the skin was sewn together.(if that makes sense.) It looks really cool and creepy and it looked best on her the stitches for the arm. But after resizing it you could barely tell it was there. D: so that made me sad. So if you do end up creating a really detailed piece on photoshop, be sure to keep the file big and not resize it and save it. That's what I learned. xD
That was really a good tip and you are right, having a near picture of clouds while you draw them is a nice first step on making detailed clouds.I already started the tutorial and I had a lot of learning in short time.
What was more surprising are all the different tones and careful blends to make the clouds 3-D .I'm thinking of trying a combo of your technique and mine using brush dynamics to have a brush that changes color with preasure and works with airbrush.Don't know if you have tried also changing the opacity with preasure,it brings nice results.
You can even custom your airbrush to do a bucnh of things and combine it with some weird gradients.I can't wait to come back from my tomora exams to try this.
I also found out that you really worked in detail for the clouds and groud. You probably used a big canvas and zoomed in to work with a small brush in all the details, also couting on that for the tutorial.
Hehe I'm glad that I could help!
Experimenting will help a lot with exploring new techniques and finding your style. Observing other drawings and guessing what they did to achieve that effect will really help improve your art ability. Its good to understand your tools so you can achieve the best results.
haha it took a while to type it all up because I had to remember what I did. xD
And I'm sure it'll work with more than just red clouds~ You can always look at clouds at different times of the day and such. :D And I'm sure you can make a great, helpful, and successful tutorial!
One thing that helped me on clouds is redrawing a picture of a sunset that I took in the philippines. It helped me understand the shapes of clouds and all the different colors you can find in the sky.
Photos will really help a lot. xD Mostly what I do is observe everything around me in real life to see how I could recreate it. It's like a game and I think it's pretty fun. xD
Good luck on the tutorial if you decide to make it~!<3
O wow fun chan wrote me back ,thanks so much!
Humm its a very detailed comment ,I'm very happy you took the time.I was gona write you that I did got the 2 layers of the dark cloud and the light cloud bending .The other proces you made are different from what I would thought, gotta try that technique one day!
Is surprised even more by the second paragraph*
Oh so you did use middle tones to make the blending. The idea of using the airbrush is very new to me,I mostly use diffuse for that. And the errasing was a good idea,it does make the cloud blend with the background a lot better.Somehow the diffuse is for my technique a faster way to acomplish the effect, but it's not so precise as making the blending with brush-airbrush.
Is stupefact about the edit*
Wow how long did it took you to write that comment fun chan!
I'm really honored for the long comment,I'm evn thinking of making a red cloud tutorial from your comment, you did actually explained all the technique to me haha.
When I saw this, I was so excited I almost fell over!!! (I know:P) Words cannot describe how INSANLY AWESOME this is!!!!!!! You captured the whole eerie, gory, amazingness perfectly! Most DEFINATLY Soul Eater worthy!!!!!!!!!! *hails*
Awwwwww thank you so much! I'm so glad I could inspire you :') That really means a lot.
The clouds took quite a bit of time. XD it was really hard for me to make the colors blend well and stuff. What I did though was take a darkish red and laid down the basic shapes of the clouds. I did the same with the bottom clouds(bottom of the clouds on top that is. If that makes sense. XD) only in black. from there I got a rather bright light red and started putting highlights on the tops of the clouds and the bottom on the black clouds. At this point it wasn't smooth and it wasn't blended. So I got an airbrush tool and would use the eyedropper tool to get the color in between the light and the dark. Then go back and forth between the dark, light, and medium colors until it looked smooth and blended. on the clouds near the moon you can see it's a bit faded. there I put my eraser on my airbrush brush and did a quick light stroke.
Clouds vary in size and shape so when creating the basic shape just scribble and keep it an irregular shape. it really helps to look at pictures of clouds and seeing how they're shaped.
The ground was pretty complicated so i'll have to get back to you on that. xD it's late so I'll edit this comment tomorrow<3
EDIT:// okay back to finishing this comment. XD For the ground I picked a reddish brown and just put a big block at the bottom of the screen. Then I rounded the edges a little bit and made it more rugged on the top. I also added some crosses and swords and hands sticking out of the ground. From there I put a new layer on top of it and chose a big variety of darker colors and just started crosshatching across the whole thing and did more with darker colors near the edges. I really wasn't sure how to create the ground so this was mostly all experimenting. xD But it turned out to be really cool looking when I changed the 1st layer to 30% opacity. This created the effect that there was a fog or something and it showed it was farther in the distance so it didn't look too 2-D. to finish it off I put a light purple gradient at the bottom.
Also I just splattered some red blotches on the ground to make it look bloody and blended it a bit. Then I took a pale light red solid color layer, inverted it, and then put it on multiply and shaded under Arachne and Maka to show their shadows.
The sky was pretty much a Black to Red gradient over the whole picture, then putting a yellow gradient on the bottom.
And yeah. :D That's how I did the background.

Hihi Fun chan, I was really surprised to see a new picture from you with a different style. You did really tried hard ,I can't say I have the patince to work on a single picture for a day , less to say 5 days. It's really a great picture, all the details you made, the clouds,it almost looks like if it was made by the author of the serie.
I been to tired to try my best at any picture, but this one really inspires me a lot. There are so many details I would like to ask you like how you did the clouds and the background :3?
