Nothing wrong with that. It's a very useful program once you get the hang of it. I was lucky enough to have been taught it in school, but for those teaching themselves it should be just as effective. Virtually anything you can think of making can be done using photoshop.

Ah the tablet, one of the most amazing tools known to the artist.
I'm not sure what opacity you had your paint brush set to, but looking at this sort of makes my eyes go funny. It's sort of blurry and fuzzy making for a weird combo, particularly in the eyes and hair. Try adding some more shades of value into everything, it might make for a sharper image.
The good thing about photoshop is that you can experiment with color, without worrying about it being their permanently. ;P The history toolbar is a wonderful thing.
...Yeah I definitely think there might have been something wrong with your opacity levels.
