Yep! That's exactly how I did it. And I just erased the darker one until I got the look that I wanted.
I changed the settings of the eraser though. So it was set to like 50% opacity and I think around 43% flow (in Photoshop)

I do the sketch on one or two layers. I used two layers for this and this is the sketch
And then I use new layers and just block in the base colours over the sketch, like this
(Fun fact Her face was the last thing to go in before the background.)
And then I just shade and stuff. (:

Well. Sorry for the late comment, but now I am happy to say great job. :D I like the way this looks without any lineart, and I really like your shading. The cheeks and the shading of the dress look very cute and almost like oil paint.. or something. Haha. I also really like the braid. I'm not good at drawing braids, so I think that's really cool. :)

When I blend in colours I lower the opacity, so that's probably how the smudgy look came about haha.
