It is a secure link, it comes directly from the people who made it. and there is no catch. I have used their software for three years now, and didn't have to pay anything, because I use it for educational purposes. The reason why its free is because for us students it could be a great/enjoyable model/animation learning experience. but for movie directors and other professional businesses, they have to pay because its not for educational purposes. You can also use Google to find out anything else you might want to know.
oh, and if you make something that companies could possibly want to use you cant sell it to them, because you were using the program only for educational purposes. Basically you cant make money if they dont make money

Honestly, more People use 3ds max, beacuse it is better for people that model as a hobby/entertainment. Maya is more for Professionals. Its not as good but its very simple to use once you understand it
You need no proof, just sign up, your age,school/college, tell them you are a student, and then what year you will graduate. And then it says to me to the free stuff, so click it. You can choose as many free programs as you want. Maya 2012 and 3ds max 2012 if you feel like it.
I hope I answered your questions!

Well if you go to autodesk.com, in small print on the middle left of the page it says free programs for students. Then it will ask you to sign up, follow the directions
and you will get it for free, as long as you have like 3.7 gigs on your computer, If you get it I can give you some models and stuff
