I think this turned out great! ^_^ His expression just adds more character to the picture. It's one I can picture Fox using quite a lot. I thought those were stars before I read your description, so I think it turned out right.
I like the colors too. I can't color things in Photoshop for the life of me--something I will get to practicing one of these days. lol I think you did a wonderful job in Photoshop. Once again, it adds character.
Oh yeah! I've heard of that concept... Mistakes can be covered up and the the detail is a lot more sharp when the picture is minized! Thankyou for mentioning it though, I appreciate any of your advice! I actually went and bought a comic art board in the summer (saving it for my good copy manga). I'm not sure at the percent its sized at, but it has all the printing guidelines. I really can't wait to use it x3
Oh and speaking of comics, I visited your portfolio on wifi and I saw your Shoe Factory comic! Its so cool, I said I hadn't seen it before but noe I remember that I actually viewed the beginning once (I didn't know you made it)! I couldn't comment on my original browser so i couldn't leave feedback. That was quite a while ago... I'll definitely take another look and comment! I got my younger sister to check it out today too and she read it all and loved it!!
Hah, yes! I usually draw things much larger than this, now. That's been drilled into me though my experiences with comics / illustration in general. Draw it larger, so you can shrink in down and it'll look better. That tends to (generally) diminish some of the imperfections. So if I'm drawing a regular page-sized comic, then I'll actually draw it larger than the size it's supposed to ideally be in print. You may already know that, but I'm going to do away with self-censorship / making assumptions, because you're interested in advice, especially relating to comics :D
Wow! I thought it was bigger since its so full of detail!! I usually work on smaller areas too with my copics, just for the record. I find it really neat to see the finished artwork and then find out the 'behind the scenes' process! Haha thats funny about it being faster to sketch... you did really awesome!
SO cool! I do like how you always keep the character of the painting intact... its so interesting to look at! Yeah, thats right... it does look like a comic panel and that totally caps off its charm^^ I really love it as your avatar!!
It's definitely a very small sketch - and a very quick one to complete! I probably spent more time noodling around with it in photoshop than actually drawing it. Also used a different pen this time - no microns, just a ballpoint. It's probably about 4 x 4 inches (er, 10 x 10 cm, for the metric folks).
Thanks! Yeah - I definitely wanted to keep true to the character of the original work, when I was editing in photoshop. So I kept the splotchy paint aesthetic (instead of darkening that all down to a flat field of darkness), and decided not to crop the edge of the paint out - this is almost like a panel in a comic, the way I have it displayed now. Then, I just decided to use the original form for my current avatar.
This is amazing! I love his expression... He's rather cute^^ I love the snowy feeling too! I don't think you messed up with photoshop... I like the textures that can be seen in the paint and the tone of the painting is really cool! And I always love sketchy art, with all its character!
I can't tell if he's looking confident, or saying "golly gee!!" or if he's about to sneeze... or if he's sneering, or saying, "well, would you lookit tha'..." ... but yes, I was aiming for confident, so I'm glad that comes across.
This drawing was done with pen, gray marker, and india ink wash (for the sky). The tan and blue coloring (in the eyes) is digital. Did some tinkering with the contrast / curves, but that's normal stuff that I do for everything anyway. My current avatar is much closer to the original image, color wise. That one saw minimal editing, just the addition of the gray in the lower right and left corners.
I dunno, I like his expression. He looks confident, the kind that pilots express in their expressions!
Exactly what editing did you do, digitally? I'm just curious, since I tend to edit my own coloring with programs (well, mainly tweaking things like contrast and brightness).
