I love Mark Crilley's work! 8D
But yeah, the line seems to get blurred with the new anime styles, but generally I mostly think shojo vs. shonen is determined by type of story you write, and less about the drawing style itself. I've been told my style started leaning towards shojo the last year or so because I started giving the girl's bigger/prettier eyes (my stories are action oriented, but I just love drawing pretty eyes). So I started thinking about who I'd like my stories to be aimed at, and that'll determine the style I use.
I have no idea what defines shojo vs shonen anymore! I always thought my way of drawing is shojo, but I was watching Mark Crilley's shojo vs shonen guy face, and I think I try to draw like his shonen example more...
The biggest thing I can say is to draw as often as possible. (I really want to get into the habit of sketching something everyday, but have yet to do that.) Whether it's 15 minutes, an hour, etc. The more you draw, the better. Also, practicing anatomy really helps. Tip: it's best to draw from life, but you can make due with books and photos. DA is a great place for stock images, but you need to be careful because there's a lot of perverted stuff too. (I can send you a note with some good photographers on DA)
Also, look at different styles because anatomical proportions change depending on the art style. For example, I want my art to lean towards the more serious, shonen look; so I'm trying to make my anatomy more realistic. But if you want the more anime/shojo style, then the anatomy doesn't have to be spot-on. Another thing: DON'T bring yourself down by comparing yourself to your favorite artists, and don't throw away the stuff you think is crappy. Drawing is always helpful and you can learn from your mistakes.
Holy crap. O-O They look awesome! Your art's come such a long way since then. (told you) They look alot different too! I love their expressions and anatomy. Any pointers on how I can better mine?

I really like these new sketches, especially Trae in this one ^^ You should do some color pieces of them for us to see!

Thank you! That really means a lot coming from you. I'm trying to get back to my more-shonen style and I'm really liking it.
