Well, if you're complaining I suppose we can make the discussion a little more inflammatory if you wish. *ahem* Thou addlepated knave! Canst thou see thy ship hast sailed with the wrong captain! Turn thy course posthaste or be forever doomed amidst wreck of other ill-favored ships!'
There. That good enough for you? Though now I am curious if there is a female version of knave
Ah, I see. Three and half. Four. It's been a really long time which I have obviously lost track of xD He's had a good long run for sure and no doubt he's tired. I've heard being the Doctor and the constant traveling and interacting with the fan base can be quite draining.
That makes sense liking Amy and the Doctor's ship coming from that direction. I can understand that since it looked like neither of them had previous attachments. I was just so angry at her doing that it took me awhile to forgive her ^^"
Yeeeees! I know exactly what you mean! Awesome couples are sorely lacking on tv! They were really good together :3 I really liked how well Rory and the Doctor worked together when she was kidnapped ^^b
And you're right. All the boyfriends on there do seem to be losers xD Though in Mickey's case he got better as it went along but by then they weren't dating so it didn't matter . . . unless it's because they weren't dating that he got better orz
I suppose you could make a case for shipping any of his female companions really. Moffat and co. put in enough teasers in there just to mess with us -_-
The christmas episode was both the best christmas and regular episode we've had in a lot time (I'm not counting the 50th as a regular episode). I just . . . I really love eleven. How he wasn't willing to abandon those people and he was willing to fight. And how no matter how old he got he still loved the children ;3;
I am in complete agreement with you. That regeneration was a lovely way to go out. How it's okay to change as long as we don't forget where we came from.
At first I was confused about what you meant when you said the way 10 went out turned a lot of people against 11, but then I thought about it and I have to agree. Especially contrasting it with 11's which was full of hope and warmth like you said 10 it's just I don't want to gooooooo lol I definitely think it made it easier for Capaldi to enter stage right.
(sorry for replying so late ^^')
I think this is the most civilized discussion on shipping, let alone ships in Doctor Who, that has ever transpired. XD
Matt has indeed had the job for - okay, well, series 5 started in April of 2010 and rounded out it's a bit more than three and a half years. But he's had the role for even longer and came to be 11 on New Years Day of 2010 so it's essentially been 4+ years. My other measuring stick for it is "I was a freshman in college when 11 came around and now I am graduated and with a job". It's been...something.
Speaking of being around for all that time - this is just a personal thing - when 11 and Amy were shown in the series 5 trailer, I was like "wow these two are great together". And they show that kiss scene, totally out of context, and I went "hmmmmmmm ship that ships itself". Jump ahead to the episodes airing - "Amy has a boyfriend? Guess we're continuing on in that grand Who tradition of loser boyfriends. Aw, but Rory's nice. OH, THEY'RE ENGAGED? OH. Okay how is this going. Oh it's that kiss scene anD IT'S JUST SO WRONG AGH MAKE IT STOP. YES DOCTOR, PLEASE TAKE THEM ON A ROMANTIC DATE." To me, Amy and Rory work, and I loved them dearly. Part of this is because you almost never see married couples on TV in action-adventure roles, so that was new and interesting and I really enjoyed that dynamic being added to the show and seeing a trio without a love triangle.
Re: Donna and Clara - like I said, most civilized discussion on shipping ever here. XD I'm not like, deeply wounded if people don't ship what I ship and vice versa because, you know, I get it. And they're fictional characters. But I get it. All I ask is that people don't snark or give passive aggressive comments and we cool.
And FINALLY yes I saw the Christmas special...on Christmas. I enjoyed it and really had no idea what to expect going into it. I cried during the bits with 11 and Clara as he was getting older but - my God - what a glorious regeneration. He air guitar'd. He air guitar'd into his next life. I could not cry when that was happening. And the ending was wonderfully bittersweet and I was totally okay with how warm and gentle it was. It segued very nicely into the "*SNEEZE* KIDNEYS" birth of 12. I've always felt that 10's regen into 11 pitted fans against him, so this one was very well handled and has pumped me up for series 8.

Matt has been doing this for four years? It doesn't seem that long ;3; I remember when the dear lad regenerated for the first time xD
Yeah, I love Matt but I can't wait to see Capaldi's take on the Doctor. It should be exciting. I've heard it's good though I haven't seen it yet orz Hopefully tomorrow *crosses fingers*
XD I loved how you described Martha and the Doctor's relationship. So true smh I just hated watching it because it felt so awkward her trying so hard and him either not getting it or purposefully ignoring it orz
Amy annoyed me because she was engaged to a man she was going to marry the next morning! I mean, I can understand going on a trip in the TARDIS but then coming onto the Doctor like she did I found inexcusable :/ I mean, I really do love Rory and Amy as a couple and they were great companions after they got it all sorted out but I think Rory could've done a lot better with someone else. Just my opinion though ;)
River I have always loved just because she's awesome. And because she's awesome I love her relationship with the Doctor. I really liked how it kinda developed from 'The Time of Angels' where he was still wary of her to the end where they were constantly catching up in their journals and chatting like a married couple. I do understand though that part of their relationship was 'informed'. As in we all know they have this great long relationship (because she says so and she's from the future (sometimes)) but we don't always see that developed. We're just supposed to expect them to be great together so I do understand your hangups about that relationship.
I suppose I understand your point. Companions like Donna and Clara could have a healthy romantic relationship because they have such a solid base. I just really don't like to think of either of them as more than friends XDXD I just loved watching Donna smack 10 around too much ^^"
I agree it will certainly be interesting to see how Clara and 12's relationship goes. I can also say nothing about big age gaps because I am a bit notorious for doing that in my own writing xD ^^"
Let me know when you've watched the Christmas special!
My first rodeo with regeneration was with Tennant, so I've gone through this before, but I actually spent the whole four year cycle with Matt Smith. It's been a long build-up (whereas with Tennant I came in at the end of series 4) and I have many, many sentimental attachments and memories to the 11-era. I have no ill-will towards him leaving or Capaldi or anything like that, but it is still going to tear me apart. ...Well. Depending on how it's handled.
I don't really mind the romance angle of Who except for when I loathe the ship. I "get" Amy and I "get" Martha and why they felt the way they did but those two ended up either a.) getting knocked with rational thought and/or b.) realized the object of their affection was a pining, morose loser and she was a strong independent woman who didn't need that. :V I like River enough but I never really "felt" the relationship between her and the Doctor - but I just kinda shrug at it. I feel nothing towards them.
Donna and Clara are examples of fun relationships that actually, to me, work the best if you really want the Doctor to have a "romance" angle. I totally feel like 10 and Donna would be those two that bum around for a bit and kinda go "hey we should get married" "yes that's a great idea". 11 and Clara are really goofy and funny but also very sweet - it's just a nice relationship. And you can play either of these two 'ships as friendship or something more, but to me, that works better than any other companion/Doctor ship because of that fundamental base.
To me the age difference between Coleman and Capaldi is going to be interesting and I do look forward to seeing it play out, but I dare anyone to say they can't be romantically shipped because of the age gap. For one, Eccleston and Piper were further apart in age than even Kingston and Smith, and two - the Doctor is already over a thousand years old. How much more of an age gap can you get. XD
*holds your hand and cries with you*
This is my first real regeneration. I knew David Tennant and all but watched the series in stops and starts and by the time I had caught up with the series it was already one season into Smith so I didn't get the immediate impact of losing him. Now I'm going to be terribly sad about Smith leaving even though I'm super excited about seeing what Capaldi does with his role ^^ ;3; OTZ
I had never heard the moniker 'whouffle' but I love it XD
I wonder how much they're going to be doing any romance/relationship since Capaldi is older. Honestly I wouldn't find toning that part down amiss. It was getting a little frustrating with every single female companion falling for him. I think that's why I liked Donna so much because he was so solidly in the friend zone xD
