haha... maybe it's the art... me..i personally dont like the story lol i dont like robots :P but i really loved the opening song!! Uninstall <3333 i just heard it yesturday on radio and since then im hearing only this song on repeat almost for two days :DDD
Well, that's lame. My parents refuse to watch anime, though...like they'll watch Disney movies but no anime because for some reason Disney isn't for kids, but anime is...O.o; But my friends are like that. They like it to only be in dubs because they care more about the animation than the writing.
You may hate the anime, or you may love. It depends on how much change you can tolerate in the plot, but I highly recommend it. It's in my top anime now, it's just a bit disappointing that there is no English dub.
(I didn't mind watching it with subs, but I kinda want to share the anime with my family, weird yes, but they won't watch anime unless it's in English so...yeah.) Oh well.
Yeah, mecha scenes aren't really the point of the things. It's just that looming (oh my god...completely off topic but this word...this word...I've been trying to remember for all of 2014 and I suddenly remembered it now! O.O) symbol of destruction that haunts the story.
Yessss! I like to draw characters eyes like that as well. It's that half circle shape that just looks so good for some reason...*3*
Hrmm...I feel like maybe the manga had more romance? I felt it was a bit bothersome at times...maybe...or I am remembering it incorrectly. I usually hate romance in action/psychological thrillers but only if it's done really really well and it adds to the plot.
I looked it up and the way he dies is much different. I always knew he wasn't as bad as he seemed because he reminded me so much of my brother and I felt that sort of connection with him, that I was his little sister and he was my older brother. Ushiro was one of my favourites so I was sad to see him die, but the manga ending is much less sad than the anime, because I feel like he accepts his death peacefully and ends with his friends whom he kept denying his friendship with. Makes me want to watch the anime now if it's different...>3>
At first, I had a hard time telling the characters apart as well (haven't read the manga, but from what I've heard, it's different from the anime.)
However, the 3D didn't bother me too much, but probably because I didn't really care about the mecha scenes too much, I was more interested in the stories of each character, and I was not disappointed.
I like how some of the characters looked (Example, for some reason, I really liked how they drew Kodama's eyes, I don't know why, but that's probably why he was my second favorite character. It's just too bad he died so soon in the anime.)
Another reason I liked the anime was because he didn't have really any romance in it, sure there were a few hints and scenes here and there, but it didn't get in the way, and Thank Goodness it didn't, I hate it when anime has uneeded romance in it.
If I could change one thing about it, I would of let Ushiro live in the end. Seriously, I was sad when he had to die because he was my favorite because I felt like I could relate to him the most, plus I always have loved it when cold characters break out of their shell and end up being rather nice.

I haven't watched the anime, but I've been listening to the opening since I was like 10 so I agree with XxArrancarFanxX 100%. That opening is KILLER! Next to the greatness of Cruel Angel's Thesis just as the manga is close the greatness of Evangelion.
Holy crap is Bokurano in my top ten favourite mangas of all time. I almost wrote a whole article for a pop culture journal about just one of the chapters and how that speaks to one aspect of shounen manga, although violent at times, do not always promote violence.
But yeah, it's probably the art style. That's what through me off at first, also a lot of the characters look the same. Once you get to reading it then you get closer to the characters to tell them apart well enough, but the darkness of the style makes it a bit difficult to tell. The way the artist draws faces makes it difficult to differentiate.
But it adds to the gritty harshness of the story.
I never watched the anime just because I was disappointed in the use of 3D. I just don't like the mix of 3D and 2D where the 3D model sticks out like a sore thumb. I think Rebuild of Evangelion did it geniusly, but older anime just makes it look ugly. Also I feel like the anime is an example of a style that just turns me off from anime. It's the colourful type of anime where the mood is unclear because each scene has wildly different colours. I dunno how to explain this, but I have often found myself steering away from anime that doesn't have a clear mood and colour palette...
Hrmm...How can I explain this better? Samurai Flamenco has a low colour saturation that makes it feel warmer, but not out of place with the colour. Otougizoushi's colouring style is mainly influenced by sumi paintings in the first half so it's very dark and almost colourless, but in the second half it's light and colourful like watercolours. Death Note uses a lot of filters to give a movie-esque dark appearance.
I feel like the Bokurano anime looks pretty good but it would've looked better and more appropriate to make it darker and messier like the manga. Like higher contrast or something because it looks too warm, inviting, and happy when it's a tragedy...
