I'm exactly the same: character > background when drawing. Because you might do an awesome background only to have it covered up by the characters. Hmmmm thinking about them together is a good idea! I only have a general idea in my head when I start. I think artists who can strike a perfect balance between backgrounds and characters are so admirable (Namie-kun is A+++. Super happy I met her once!). So until then, I guess it's more practice-__-
I dunno if it's just me, but I usually do the character first and then the background and when I get to the background I get so frustrated because I was mainly thinking about how the character would look in a background rather than how the picture would look with the character and the background as one.
I think we both should think of them as one thing. The background is also the character. Backgrounds are just so darn frustrating, though...>3>
If you plan your pictures you are probably way ahead of me 'cause I never do that! I really should, though, maybe it would take the stress off the background.
Hey! Thank you so much for your thorough and thoughtful comment. The tree silhouette things are supposed to be bamboo haha (as per the setting of Imperishable Night). I don't think I planned the picture very well in general-- but yes, you are quite right in saying that closer objects are supposed to be blurry (especially when viewed through a lens)D: This should apply to the bamboo that is 'closer' to the viewer's perspective. I definitely need to spend more time practising background composition and actually drawing in a background. I'm so lazy with lineart...
I actually put on a dark filter which covered up the colouring. I erased it around the character because I wanted the colouring to show through, but I guess that put lighting out of whack. Will definitely remember this for next time!
By the way, the glowy things are fireflies because Wriggle is a firefly! Hehe, I'm glad you like Touhou fanart too^^bb
I really love the glowy sparkly effect you used here~! I also think you did quite a good job on the perspective. It might just be because the lines of the trees/stems (dunno what they are exactly, still look cool either way) seem to be in slightly different directions, but I can still tell that it's from an upward angle which is extremely hard to pull off. You did a great job here~
I love the details of the hair and the eyes are super adorable, especially the rosy cheeks~ X3 That's always my favourite part~
I think what may be what is bothering you here is that the tree/stems and glowing light are all kind of blurry compared to the figure which is really clear and defined. I think the colours were chosen very well, just perhaps that one thing. It's difficult creating a good sense of space, but just remember that the figure and the background are just one whole picture. Colours should all match well with eachother throughout. If you shade one thing very dark then you should do so with the rest of that area. Things that are farther away are harder to see, thus more blurry. (I dunno if I am making any sense here, sorry if this doesn't help at all! ;m; )
I think it's totally fine to draw Touhou~ No such thing as too much Touhou fanart~ >:D
