I used this tutorial LINK the artist used Manga Studio for the line art then she colored it in Photoshop.
I sort of improvised but using the layer modes is the trick. I used multiply mode on the dark shading. You can use multiply on your highlights but I used a different mode. You can have the shading and highlights on different layers are in the same layer like in the tutorial.
I tried to follow the tutorial when I had a free trial of Photoshop. But it didn't turned out the way I wanted so I stuck with MS.
Brushes are okay I used them when I don't want to draw a certain thing like trees or use them to decorate like stars or lace prints.
TBH I feel like I rely on brushes too much and it makes me lazy instead of just drawing the thing lol And I almost used a wire fence brush, in the end I drew it by hand.
Hope the tutorial helps and thank you for the complements :)
As a fellow Manga Studio user, I'd like to know how well the Photoshop tutorial worked for you. I know that Photoshop tutorials are much more abundant, but I don't know how well they translate.
I'm really impressed with this picture. I like the little touches like the "keep out" sign. And you did a good job with the brushes. I'm actually kind of afraid of brushes.
I agree that backgrounds are hard. For me, it's a mixture of lacking ideas and lacking composition skills. You're a step ahead of me there.
I've done that thing where the highlights don't match up with the light source, too, so you're not alone.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
