This is a good illustration.I say you nailed the technique. The only thing I can say that I've seen this type of coloring before in western comics but there's a part that is missing. The thing that is missing is the line art detailing and color blocking with tremendous use of black. You can see what I mean Here
Since the shading has a low ratio between highlights and shadows, the coloring itself may lack depth. So the artist uses elaborate "crosshatching" techniques to create higher contrast. If you study the pic, you see alot of details have been put in before coloring. I don't know if the tutorial has the same type of line detail but I really do think that this style matches that line work.
I've always been more of a fan of the hard shadows style, but this actually looks pretty good! Definitely something I've never been able to pull off! I imagine if you practice it enough it would look equally good as just hard shadowing. :)
