I get what you mean... there were times when I felt like I couldn't watch some shows around one person in particular because she'd comment and criticize (and it was more than just anime... I remember she couldn't stand the Lilo and Stitch TV series...). I get the feeling that people just do that, but sometimes, it really tends to take the enjoyment out of what you're watching.
I still don't watch certain things around her, especially if I feel it would be something she's likely to comment on. But when I watch something and she does take an interest in it (especially anime), I just get overjoyed ^_^
Bahahaa! I totally know what you mean. Unless it's someone I know will understand (aka another anime watcher or friend that doesn't care either way) I usually never reveal what an otaku anime person I am. It's even worse when I inadvertently speak Japanese (subs all the way) and they ask how I know Japanese. Then I feel like an idiot admitting that I'm an anime freak who listens to japanese a lot because of all the shows I watch. It's even worse when they're from Japan and you just know they're thinking you Japaneseophile freak XD
All well, at least it makes us really excited when we do find a fellow anime lover, ne?
