Thanks for pointing me in the direction of that Tumblr site. The tip about making sure the creatures aren't sacred to some cultures is also helpful. I never would have thought about that.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
I forgot the tumblr user Writing With Color LINK has some good advice on writing stories that involve cultures outside of Europe. Just type in mythology or folklore on the search box on their homepage.
I first heard about the Amazon folklore of the fresh water dolphine through the cartoon Wild Thornberries.
I'm honestly not that knowledgeable about mythology and folklore. I did a lot of browsing online. I stopped because whenever I tried to research more about a folklore creature like the Enchantado whatever new website I researched they said the exact same thing as Wikipedia like they just copy and paste the information from Wiki.
Wikipedia is your best place to start. But of course its not the most reliable place to research because of it can be edited by outside sources.
I have a book called the Encyclopedia of Spirits by Judika Illes. It has basic information on faeries, ghosts, demons, gods and goddesses from around the world. But they don't have all of the known deities and creatures for some reason like the Egyptian god Ra
Here's a website on Greek Mythology where they have information on hundreds of deities LINK
If you're going to research mythology and folklore around the world remember that some figures from myths and folklore are considered very sacred depending on the ethic group.
Wish I could be more help to you.
I have a question about Calista. Actually it's more about what inspired you to create her. What was it that you read? A book? A site? I'm asking because I'm trying to come up with a story with a lot of mythology surrounding various cultures. Basically, the world in this story is populated by mythological creatures instead of humans. Since I know so little about this, and you seem to be pretty knowledgeable, I was hoping you could point me in the right direction.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
You're doing great, Art! I love all of these characters; they are each so different in shape and size and color! Honestly it was you who moved me to finally start exploring facial diversity in my characters :D
I haven't posted the original drawings of her but she was original mostly white with Japanese ancestry from her grandfather side so like 1/3 Japanese. Or 1/4 ? I'm not good at math lol
Now she's third generation Japanese American.
I'm glad you like her current design. Thank you.

The first two entries are my favorite so far, I really like Lucia's outfit and the Fairy Queen reminds me think of a shining gem! I think she looks fine without wings, I've seen renditions of fairy queens without wings, while all her subjects have them. So, it works for her picture here.
Thank you!
How I draw body types; I draw shapes before I draw the person, like if I want this person to have an hourglass shape I draw an hourglass and use it as guidelines. If I'm drawing on the computer I draw the shapes on a separate layer. In traditional drawing I draw the shapes very lightly.
There's another movie called Undine on Amazon its also about a Silkie and it take place in modern Ireland. I wasn't able to watch the whole movie. Then there's the a new animation movie called Song of the Sea have you heard of it?
I really like looking at your OCs. Each one is so different. Do you have any tips on drawing different body types?
Had I known about OC October, I would have done something for it.
Oh, and thanks for reminding me about The Secret of Roan Inish. It's been so long since I read the book or saw the movie (I was about 11), but I remember really enjoying them both.

Say, have you tried working your hands with a stress ball lately? It usually chills out any pains in my wrists when they act up.

The Song of Sea was made by the same people that did Secret of the Kells. They're both made by an animation studio in Ireland.
