Building light and shadow is a big thing with colour, but multiply and overlay layers are a big help when adding additional effects over your painting without smudging or blending what you've already worked on.

Multiply and overlay layers should stay separate, but sometimes it works to merge them to the actual painting layer if you need to darken/lighten an area but you also want to blend it right into your painting.
