wow. i admit i skipped over a chunk of the sports stuff but you're arguments about the western anime otaku is very good and quite convincing. what's more fascinating is that your entire essay relates to stuff we've been talking about in my religious myths and rituals class: stuff like loyalty no matter the outcome, paraphenalia, and social or personal binding, where people are practically religiously dedicated to something such as a sport, a show like Oprah, soap operas, WarpTour, or anime. And I'm writing my term paper for that class focusing on anime. It was really great to hear some insight and thought about the subject. Thank you for sharing!!!
I'm ahead of the game on that one. I already have caught up to Eyeshield's Japanese release and am collecting the English editions. ^_^ Actually, I use OneManga for all my pre-English release needs. It's good to know what I'm getting in to before I buy the translations.
this is great article. i myself am a big fan of FSU, and i happen to love basketball. so i feel for u. if u really like football, and u love anime, go to www.onemanga.com and go and look up the series "Eyeshield 21". it's a football manga that's completely awesome in every way shape and form. ^^
*sighs* Yet another bandwagon driver without a load to carry... it's disheartening sometimes. At least we pull through season after season.
I never expected all that many hugs/favorites to begin with. Stupid tennis and its stupid bishonen, hogging all the glory. I know people say they can't stand baseball, but tennis? Man! Maybe I'm too uncouth or something. *shrug*
I remember when the Hurricanes won the Cup. You kinda trounced us. That aside, my best bet would probably be that Millen is close to Miracle Ito, but that's just me.
*psst* ...and I have a sneaky suspicion Kitna might try to channel Hiruma sometimes, but gets Monta instead. ^_^v *E21-geek*

LIONS SUCK.
Haha, just kidding. I can't really say anything, being a huge fan of the Cincinatti Bengals. *groan*
And the Skins are my home team, they're not much better at this point.
I've always admired the Lions on that Thanksgiving day. I remember being just a wee lass when my father said to me "Even though the Lions aren't a good team, everyone dreads facing them on their traditional Thanksgiving game. They've got nothing to lose, and they'll fight till the end."
While Otaku may have things to lose, they are like the Lions in that they never give up. Never surrender.
To what other people think of them.
This was a very cool essay, for me anyway, because I love football and anime. Sorry it hasn't gotten more hugs and comments, but uh...*whispers* sometimes I wonder if the only sport people get around here is Prince of Tennis. ;)
I've got my Carolina teams down here, and with only one championship in our entire history amongst 3 professional teams (Lord Stanley's Cup), I feel your pain.
I've always loved the Detroit teams (my dad's from there...Barry Sanders is the greatest football player ever!), so I know why the Lions can't win:
MATT MILLAN!
That, and they need an actual franchise QB for once!
You make some great points in this article. Anime is just so embedded into Japanese culture, whereas here it is just too culturally different to be accepted in the mainstream. Like you said, they're just really seen as childish cartoons. And while they certainly aren't childish, the fact can't be changed that they really ARE cartoons. Thanks to this, it's hard to foresee an immediate future where anime is as widely accepted in the United States as much as it is in Japan. Oh well, anime will stay our little secret.
...so who would the "Matt Millan" of Western Anime be?
