Interesting read! I found your post when googling for anime with good psychological themes hehe. I'm doing a postgrad in Health Psychology, not by influence of anime as back when I was a kid, I didnt have the $$$ to invest in anime, which is foreign and comes in expensive VCRs lol. I was lucky enough to read a few manga pirated from my richer friends but not enough to make me attached to a character and be inspired by them, though now that I realise there's so much in manga/anime that could assist in influencing one's career choice (though career representation might not always be true). I see my other non-psych friends doing something worthy with their degrees earlier than me, but I remind myself that it's like waiting for a fruit tree to finally mature so I can finally harvest my life out of it! On another note, Monster is a great anime thats really inspiring ;)
We all have to get our inspiration from somewhere. I am also a Psychology major, fighting my way through college at the moment. Can't really say that I was inspired by anime to be here though... Or did it? I've just always been good at reading people and understanding the thinking behind other's actions.
Also, no one ever really leaves college with the same path that they set themselves out on when they started. I started out as a computer science/mathematics major, then did a complete focus shift over to the real brain over mechanical.
I hope your choice in paths leads you to a good life. Look into industrial organizational psychology if you want a fast budding career field that focuses on solving people's problems within the workplace. It's kinda like detective work, spotting what can cause problems for a company and developing ways to improve worker life.
lol, listen to me giving a sales pitch... /sigh, I'll shut up now. You do whatever you feel is right.
That financial return is also one of the reasons I am in my career right now… Though I did not make much of a critical decision nor take much thinking as to what I will choose… It was more like a coin-toss for me… hehehe… Despite that fact, people still confuse me for being a student of my careers not chosen.
You are right, though. Being able to understand how the human mind works will help you in story writing. I hope you aim to get a PHD.
You’ll be graduating soon, right? Good luck, my friend.

I can relate to the part where you said that anime helped determine your career path. I am aiming to be some sort of animator or multi-media artist. I'm only a Junior, (I've been aiming for my goal since 8th grade) but thanks to anime, but I pretty much know for sure on what I want to do with my life!
BUT, being in the medical field would be fun and helpful towards society. Although I'm no good at what some of the requirements could be... for one, numbers... I don't know if that's required, but I'll avoid math-related careers for sure! Plus remembering everything... couldn't do that either.
That was a good story, by the way! You have a pretty decent writing style and it was fun to read. Great job!
Whatever you decide to do next, do what one of my friends DaFeather says: "Live on and never give up on your dreams!"
I can relate to this story so much.... (My parents are Filipino as well; me being a first generation Fil-Am.)
In any case, I feel the same way about having your parents trying to brainwash you into the Nursing field. Being an anime fan and pursuing a career far from related to it is tough. Don't get me wrong though, I would love to be a nurse. Not just for financial security, but out of compassion for others. I do, however, also feel that they forced me into a career they want for me. I know they are well meaning, but I feel that I could do more than that for the rest of my life.
Being in my senior year in High school, I often question what I really wanted to do in my life. After reading your story, I think its time for me to face this question head on. If anything, I want to thank you as a fellow otaku for sharing your story.
Your story is very impressionable! Ever since i was first introduced to anime, I've learned a lot more and because of that, I've been thinking about some of the career choices in which I might be able to use some of the things I've learned. But I had never thought about Psycology! I may look into this ^^ Thanks you so much for this essay! Even though it's not labeled as one, you taught me so much

Wow, its really nice to hear a story like this it really is. I can relate to everything your saying too.
I had plenty of times where I question what I really wanted to do with my life, which I think I found. In fact I posted in my world.
Anyway I love hearing how anime has such a big effect in someones life. It was also written well, good job.
