Great job on this subject. I agree in that the "poor college" excuse doesn't really work anymore. I have no personal objections to fansubs on the basis that you somehow support the industry by buying merchandise. I hate the argument that "oh, I can get ____ tv series for cheap, but anime is $20 or $30 a disk"" because when you're saying that, you're putting tv series XXX (place whatever tv series here) on the same entertainment level as whatever anime show you're thinking about buying. That is a load of bull, because between buying a full season of whatever tv show and buying the latest release of, say, XXXHolic, for the same price, I'll pick up XXXHolic first, for the simple reason that I will derive more pleasure from watching the anime over the television.
Right now is the time for anime fans to step up to the plate. I think the industry is making real progress in terms of trying to make anime more affordable and accessible to more people, and it's up to us to ensure that this trend continues. Funimation, Viz, and Nozomi, for example, are putting out stuff we really want ex. Black Lagoon, Bleach ( in box sets ), Maria-sama ga miteru in subtitle only format, all of which people on the internet have continuously demanded be done. They are taking the plunge, and so should we.

VERY well said. You argued your point beautifully, and I loved the personal anecdote you put into it. I hope now the "younger" generation will listen.
And for others reading, if you can't afford to buy anime, ask for it for gifts, for your birthday, holidays, whatever. Buy merchandise at conventions, ANYTHING! It really is our job to keep the industry running so we can continue to have this great exposure!

Excellent essay. You put your point across in an honest and convincing way.
You play Warhammer 40k, so do I. Which army do you use? I use necrons.
