Great observations. I too have been told the "you'll grow out of it" line over and over. But I always wonder, will I? My parents still listen to the same bands they did when they were my age. They still watch the same television shows. I think that people look down upon anime because they think of it as either childish or just plain strange. Most of that comes from a slight xenophobia that most people have, and the rest comes from a sense of superiority that some people try to tote around. Some of us simply don't understand or take the time to, and I doubt that will change.
I do like the fact that we can learn from anime and manga and how extensively you pointed it out. I think that the right person can learn from anything, and I think that unless you actually are a vegetable, or are incapable of taking in any information at all, you learn something from everything you do, from watching television to reading to playing video games. Most of the anti-technology members of society claim that if teens just play video games and watch anime all day, they'll become stupid and dull. It depends on your definition of "stupid," meaning that there's a possibility the kid has blown off his homework to do these things (though I'd like to point out that the majority of homework nowadays teaches nothing in the first place) but dull? I think not. I think that the only kind of person that's dull is the kind of person who isn't open to anything.
Thanks for writing this insightful essay. Great work!
Yay! Lovely! I love your style it's really professional but has a funny side! I could really relate to everything u said!!! I'm just a little kid that is much younger then u and verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyy inexpierinced but in class were learning about persuasive writing right now(and we have been for 3 years...) I don't want to show my nerdyness by teling u every persuasive device u used so I'm just going to say that it's.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... FABULICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol this entertained me! to answer your question... (hehehe)
anime and manga has taught me to never give up on myself and that things can always be worse so treasure the happiness that you have now. drama can always be around the corner, but happiness is never far off either. um...and there's always one major hearthrob in the school...even if he's gay...(lol that was in my school's case...)
i completly agree as well. i wasn't ever taught anything and it's very surprising that i turned into such a good person. i had no father and basically no mother. anime has taught me so much, especially to always be kind to others. i'm really glad i'm such a anime geek.

Very nice, Nehz. Well written and funny to boot.
Yes, we have all been there. It's a real shame, too, cause animation in general is such a great way to express ideas. Things you can't do in reality, or at least can't do cheaply, are very much possible in comics and cartoons. All it takes is a good imagination.
That was very well written and very true. I've met plenty of people who think I'm wasting my time reading "comic books" or watching "cartoons." They never take the time to look beyond the obvious and find the deeper meaning in things. You'd think they would considering everyone I went to school with was always trying to find the deeper meaning in everything in mass media.
Thats really well written. I compleatly agree with you, my family think its a wast for me to love anime, but I do learn so much form it. Something they would never teach me.
What majority of people fail to see beyond the "badly draw cartoon" figures is the storyline. Storyline means everything to any story telling of any kind. It is the storylines that draws us. Sure aesthics attract us too, but it is the story that keeps us read/watching it.
People fail to see that manga/anime is just anohter form of media in which to tell a story. As we all know the stories varies from a plethera of subjects and themes, containing words of wisdom to pure entertainment.
If people were not so closed minded and set in their ways, they might find some gold in these "baldy drawn cartoons".

People always attack what they don't understand. They could do well to familiarize themselves with Point #5 there
It would be nice if we could get more people to see that anime is not just some bizare cartoon, but merely an art form as valid as any other. It runs the gamut of genres and age ranges, so those of us who continue to enjoy it as we get older aren't underdeveloped in our maturity in any way.

Plus, I still contest that comics and anime generally have better content to them than today's current television programmings of countless reality shows and cliché sitcoms.
