Part 11

The next day was nothing like Light expected. He had hoped for a calm day at school and then some quality time spent with Oki at the hospital. He got exactly the opposite. L had Misa arrested for being the second Kira.

Later that day when Light showed up at the hospital he told Oki everything that had happened.

“Light, L is getting closer to the real Kira and he is hell bent on you being him…” Oki paused and looked down at her hands.

“And he has every right to think this,” she said quietly.

Light placed his fingers under her chin lifting her head. “Do you think I do not know this? L has been hell bent on me being Kira since we first met, but I have managed to keep him at bay this long. Everything I do is to make L think I am not Kira. I will never let him catch me. As long as Misa keeps her mouth shut like she promised, I will be safe.”

“What if she doesn’t, Light? What if she tells L everything he wants to know? What if he finds out about the Death Note?”

“Misa will not talk. She promised me she would not,” Light told her.

“But what if she does?! L is ruthless! He has already questioned me about you. He did not let up for a second and watched me and my heart monitor like a hawk. He wanted me to slip up. He wanted me to become nervous and frightened…” A tear rolled down her cheek.

“He wanted to catch me lying to him about you.”

Light sighed softly and sat back in his chair, “I am sorry Oki. I did not want you to have to lie for me.”

Oki looked deep into Light’s eyes, “What was I supposed to do? Tell him the truth? I love you Light, even though you are Kira. I may not believe in what you are doing, but I will still stand by your side and defend you until the end.”

“I did not ask you to do that,” Light whispered.

Oki touched Light’s cheek.

“You did not have to.”

The rest of Oki and Light’s evening was spent just talking about whatever came to mind. A few minutes before it was time for Light to leave, he stood up at the side of Oki’s bed. “I am sorry, but visiting hours are over,” the nurse said as she walked into the room.

“That is fine. I was on my way out anyway,” Light told her before leaning over to give Oki a kiss.

“I am not sure if I will be able to visit tomorrow or not. However, I will call you if I cannot make it.”

“I understand, Light and please be careful. L is getting so close that it is becoming scary. The only piece he is missing is…”

Light shook his head quickly to stop Oki from speaking. He stood up and looked at the nurse who was on the phone. He then leaned back towards Oki, kissed her again and gave her a hug.

“I do not want to have to kill any more than I have to. Let’s not let information like that get out,”

“You’re terrible Light,” Oki said as Light moved over to the door.

“But you still love me.” Light turned at the door to look back at Oki, “Just as I, will always love you.”

Oki smiled at Light as he left the room.

---

The next two days had come and gone for Oki with no visits from Light, although she did get a phone call from him on both days. On the second day Oki did not like the sound in Light’s voice and she knew he was hiding something from her. However, no matter how hard she tried to get him to tell her, he would not tell what it was. All he told her was that soon, they would be together again in a perfect world.

A week passed and Oki was finally released from the hospital. As she was gathering her things to leave, L walked into her room.

“Well, I have to say the rest you have gotten while here in the hospital has done you wonders,” he told her.

Oki turned to the familiar voice, smiling, “Thank you, L. I feel wonderful too.”

Oki looked past L as if she was looking for something.

L looked behind him expecting to see someone. When he realized there was no one there he turned back to look at Oki.

“Is there something wrong Oki?”

“Well I thought Light might be with you.”

L drew his hand to the back of his head, scratching it as he looked down at the floor.

How do I tell Oki that Light is Kira and I have him in confinement? I have been dreading this day but now I have to face it.” L thought before he looked back up at Oki, “Yes, I thought that is what you might be expecting,” L paused as he stepped toward Oki.

“What do you say we get out of here and go for some ice cream? I will tell you everything then.”

Oki nodded with a weary smile. L’s actions were causing her to fear the worst as she watched him pick up her things.

---

Once at the café, L and Oki took a seat toward the back where they always sat. They ordered their ice cream and then sat looking across the table at one another.

“L, what is going on? Where is Light? Is he alright? Please tell me Kira did not find him.”

L took a deep breath and opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say a word the waitress appeared with their ice cream.

“If you need anything else just let me know,” she said.

L and Oki thanked her.

Once the first bite of ice cream was in his mouth, L knew he could delay no longer when he saw Oki’s sundae remained untouched in front of her.

“Oki,” he began, “I am sorry to have to break this to you after you have just been released from the hospital, but Light confessed to being Kira.”

Oki dropped her spoon in surprise. She did not know what to say.

Light would never confess to being Kira,” she thought, “Did Misa talk? Did she tell L about Light? Why is L telling me Light confessed? After the interrogation he put me through I am sure he knows that I know something. Is this some kind of ploy to get me to talk?”

Oki looked up at L, his face showed no expression. She looked into his eyes searching for some kind of answer, even if it was a slight glimmer that he might be lying to her about this, she had to have something.

“Oki are you alright?” L asked her.

Oki said nothing for a few more minutes so L went back to eating his ice cream.

“You are a liar, L!” Oki suddenly said aloud, “Light is not Kira! Why would he confess to something he has never done? Why are you playing with my head and telling me such lies?”

L, taken aback by Oki’s outburst, looked her dead in her eyes, “I am not lying to you Oki. I have Light in confinement for being Kira and he is the one that told me to do this because he felt that he might be Kira.” L paused taking a bite of his ice cream.

“- which is a load of crap…” L said in a low tone, his mouth full of ice cream.

“Because he does not think he is Kira. He knows he is Kira…”

L looked up at Oki, “What I do not understand Oki, is why you would want to cover for a killer like him.”

“Light is not a killer and he is not Kira!” Oki exclaimed.

“On the contrary Oki, Light is very much Kira. Since we have confined Light, the killings have stopped, and yet we are still broadcasting criminals. It can’t be just a coincidence that so far, none of them has died.”

Oki’s eyes widened again, “What is Light thinking?! By doing this he is only proving to L he is the real Kira. And why isn’t Ryuk helping Light out of this situation?” Oki was pulled from her thoughts as L continued to speak.

“Oki, you know… If I find out you knew Light was Kira, and hid it from us. I will have no choice but to confine you for being Kira’s accomplice.”

The look on Oki’s face now grew to anger and worried L when he saw it. He felt as if her glare was burning through him and knew that Oki felt he had crossed a line.

I could so easily kill you L. Even though it is forbidden, Amaterasu would tell me your name without a second thought. All I would have to do was say the word and you, my friend, would be dead.” Oki thought before breaking her glare on L.

“Are you threatening me, L?” She asked him. “Because if you are I am sorry to tell you…”

Just then, Amaterasu and Ryuk appeared in the café behind L, with them was a third Shinigami, but Oki was unable to see them. Amaterasu shook her head stopping Oki in mid sentence. Oki did not take her eyes from L as she watched the Shinigami, using her peripheral vision.

“Get rid of L, Oki. I have news for you on Light,” Ryuk told her.

Oki got to her feet. “This conversation is over L. I am going home.”

L did not stop Oki as she walked away. He looked down at his ice cream and quietly said, “I think we might have found a killer who is even more deadly than Kira.”

He then reached across the table to grab Oki’s ice cream.

“Why is it always the shy, quiet ones that are the most deadly?” L shook his head and began eating Oki’s sundae.

---

Once outside the café, Oki heard Ryuk start laughing. She turned to look at him.

“What is so funny, Ryuk.”

“You were going to threaten L’s life straight to his face back there. That’s gutsy! I mean after all, he does have Light in confinement. What makes you think he will not just haul your butt in too?”

“That has nothing to do with me, and L would not have done that,” Oki told him.

“It has more to do with you than you think. And if you had threatened L’s life, he would have taken you away without a second thought. It is a good thing Ammy stopped you,” Rem replied, though Oki could not hear or see her.

Amaterasu and Ryuk looked between them at Rem.

“Oki does not know what is going on with everything yet. If she would have told L that, it might have pulled L’s speculation from Light toward Oki. I could not let her do that. Not yet anyway,” Amaterasu told Rem.

Oki looked at Ryuk, “who is Ammy speaking to?”

“Rem...”

“Rem?” Oki questioned.

“Misa’s Shinigami…” Ryuk answered.

“Oh…”

Amaterasu looked at Oki. “Rem says that she will be willing to let you see her.”

“If that is what she wishes. I am fine with that,” Oki said.

“Give me your hand Oki,” Amaterasu told her. Oki held her hand out and Amaterasu touched it with a piece of Rem’s Death Note.

“Hello Oki,” Rem said to her, now that Oki could see her.

Oki smiled. “Hello Rem. I am sorry about what happened to Misa.”

“Yes, it is a shame this happened, but Light is going to set it all right,” Rem said.

“I am sure he will, Rem,” Oki assured her.

“Misa means a lot to me, in the same way that you mean a lot to Amaterasu. So I hope this plan will succeed - for his sake, as well as Misa’s.”

Ryuk let out a sharp laugh. “Now that he has relinquished his right to his Death Note…”

“HE WHAT?!” Oki exclaimed.

“Just what I said,” Ryuk continued, “Light relinquished his right to the Death Note so he could get L to drop his suspicions of him.”

Oki shook her head, “What was he thinking? How is that going to work? If criminals are not dying while L has him locked away, L is only going to think Light is Kira for sure. And what’s worse, he’ll actually have proof this time to back up his theories!”

Ryuk laughed again, “He has it all taken care of. And do not worry. He will get his Death Note back soon enough. After all, he has to grant you your last dying wish.”

Oki looked sharply at Ryuk, who smiled, “You humans are so entertaining,” he added.

“Stop it Ryuk,” Amaterasu told him, “Come on Oki. We will tell you everything on the way home.”
