Part 12
Once inside Oki’s home, Rem finished telling Oki what had been going on and what was planned to happen.
“So Light really thinks this is going to work?” Oki asked them.
“Light doesn’t know anything. He is only hoping it will work,” Ryuk added.
“Even if it does not work, L will not be able to prove anything. All of Light’s and Misa’s memories of the Death Note have been erased,” Rem explained.
“So if L’s suspicions about Light never go away, does that mean that Light will never get his Death Note back?” Oki asked Ryuk.
“That’s right… So it looks like I might end up having to write your name in my Death Note when the time comes,” Ryuk told her with an eerie smile.
Oki shuddered at the thought of Ryuk holding her life in his hands. Her reaction caused Ryuk to chuckle.
“Well I need to be on my way since I have to get this plan of Light’s into motion,” Rem said, “I will see you all on the other side very soon.”
Rem disappeared through the wall as Oki looked at Amaterasu, “What did she mean by that?”
“It was nothing Oki. Just something Rem likes to say.”
“Well it looks like I need to be on my way as well,” Ryuk told them.
“Take care Oki and I am sure we will met again very soon.” He then disappeared through the wall, leaving Oki and Amaterasu alone once again.
“Ryuk creeps me out. I do not see how Light handles him,” Oki said, breathing a sigh of relief.
Amaterasu chuckled, “Well you do not have to worry about Ryuk. You will not really be seeing him again so soon.”
“That’s good to know.” Oki said with a smile.
---
As the day turned to night, Oki just laid around the house and took it easy. Amaterasu sat in a chair across from Oki and watched her read a book.
“L is here,” Amaterasu announced after the few hours of silence.
Oki looked up quickly from her book as a knock echoed through her small apartment. She got to her feet and looked out the window.
“Do not worry, it is only L,” Amaterasu assured her.
“Why is he here?” Oki asked as she slowly walked towards the door.
“I am sure he is here to question you about Kira again.”
Oki opened the door slowly.
“Good evening Oki,” L said as he forced his way through the door, “So are you ready to tell me who Kira is?”
Oki, now completely upset, closed the door with a loud ‘THUD’ and pushed past him.
“I told you, L. I know nothing of this Kira,” she said defiantly.
“Umm… Yes, that is what everyone tells me.”
L grabbed her from behind and turned her so he could look into her eyes. They were just inches apart as he held on to her arm.
“Today in the café… you were going to threaten my life. Tell me why you stopped your threat in mid-sentence.”
Oki jerked away from L, “You’re crazy L! Why would I do that?”
“I am not sure yet, but I will figure it out.”
L walked further into her living room.
“Tell me Oki, what do you know about Death Gods?” L asked suddenly.
“Oki do not tell L anything!” Amaterasu exclaimed.
Oki did not look Amaterasu’s way and instead kept her eyes locked with L’s.
“Death gods…” She shook her head as she walked toward L, laughing.
“Death Gods are a race of extra-dimensional beings who survive by killing humans to extend their own lives. They are better known as a Shinigami… But they are not responsible for every death that occurs. People will eventually die regardless of whether or not the Shinigami pay attention to them, but a Shinigami can end a person’s life sooner than intended for the Shinigami’s own benefit.”
”OKI WHY!” Amaterasu yelled.
Oki paid no mind to Amaterasu as L stood there with his mouth open.
“Do you want me to tell you another bedtime story, L? I major in mythology, so I am sure I can think of a few other wild tales to tell you if you wished me to,” she said defiantly, “although it is beyond me why you want to know about that.”
L turned his head as his eyes met Oki’s. He saw that her eyes were cold and hard.
“Why ,L? Why are you doing this to Light? Why are you doing this to me?” Oki said, enraged and close to tears.
L walked away from Oki, and towards her front door.
“Because Light is Kira.” L said on his way out, “And you, my sweet Oki, know this.”
L then walked out the door and closed it behind him.
Oki dropped to the floor, lowered her head and put her hands to her face.
“I have to stop this,” she cried, “I have to get L to forget about Light being Kira.”
Oki soon became quiet and Amaterasu heard her weeping softly.
“But how… How am I going to do this?”
Oki looked up after a few minutes. She had an idea and she was sure it would work. Amaterasu did not like the look in her eyes as she heard Oki ask her the question she had been dreading.
“What is L’s real name, Ammy?”
“No Oki you cannot do this! If you kill L, Light will surly die in prison for this,” she stammered.
“I am not going to kill L. I am only going to put the fear of God into him…” Oki laughed malevolently, “A Death God that is… I will give it some time for things to settle and then L will get the surprise of his life.”
---
Weeks had past and the killing of criminals had started up once more, but L still would not release Light from confinement. He sat alone in his cell, being watched like a science experiment. It had been forty-nine days since Light, Light‘s father and Misa had been confined.
Around noon, while L was watching Misa and Light’s progress on the monitors that were set up in the crisis room, he got a surprise visit. Aizawa, a detective on the Kira case walked into the room.
“Ryuzaki, you have a young lady here to see you,” he announced.
L turned in his seat.
“A young lady?”L said, baffled.
“Yeah, she said her name was Saito Oki and that you two are very good friends,” Aizawa told him.
“Oki?!”
“Should I let her in?” Aizawa questioned. L, still shocked at this news, nodded.
“Alright then, I will show her in,” Aizawa said, before turning to fetch Oki.
L started to reach for the monitors to turn them off, but stopped and slowly pulled his hand back.
“I think I will leave them on for her,” L said in the silence of the room.
Just then, L heard the door open and turned to see Aizawa walking Oki into the room. Oki looked at Aizawa with a smile and bowed.
“Thank you very much.”
Aizawa bowed to her in return and left in silence, leaving her alone with L and the monitors. Oki walked up behind the couch.
“Oki, what a surprise to see you here. May I ask you how you found us?” L asked her.
Oki laughed as she gracefully ran her fingertips across the back of the couch. Amaterasu stood close behind her.
“Ryuk told me where I could find you,” Oki told him. She was not looking L’s way.
“Ryuk?” L asked.
Oki continued to run her fingertips on the back of the couch for a few seconds then abruptly stopped to look at L.
“My shinigami…”
L backed away from Oki as she stepped around the couch. He was so eager to escape that he stumbled into the chair behind him. Oki stepped forward again as she chuckled.
“Really L! I swear! You will believe anything, won’t you? Someone might think with your intelligence you would know better than that.”
Oki was now inching along the front of the couch.
“Then how did you find me?” L asked.
Oki stopped less than a few feet from L. She took a deep breath and sighed, “I followed you here one night.”
“That’s a lie,” L exclaimed.
“Is it? Well I am here, so you tell me how you think I did it?”
Just then, two of the other detectives working the case walked into the room. L got out of the chair and stood up.
“Take her into custody.”
Oki shook her head. “That would not be a good thing,” Oki stepped back and turned so she could see L and the other two men.
“If I do not walk out of here within the hour,” Oki looked back towards L. “The entire Kira investigation team will die.”
The two men gasped as L watched Oki for any signs of being in two minds. Her eyes were cold and hard. It was the same look L had seen in them the night he went to her place after her release from the hospital.
“I am calling your bluff Oki,” L told her, “I do not believe you could do such a thing as kill innocent people. Life means too much to you, and this renders it impossible for you to take the life of another.”
Oki laughed, “Who said I was going to be doing the killing?”
L spun quickly to look at the monitors behind him. Light still sat on the floor in his cell with his head hung. Oki only laughed harder.
“L, what makes you think Light could pull off something like this? Your idea of him being Kira is sickening.”
L returned his gaze to Oki. “The act you are putting on is sickening. Arrest her!”
The two men approached Oki and to L’s surprise, Oki did not resist and allowed them to cuff her hands. The detectives then took places on either side of her, holding on to her forearms. L walked over to them with a chair in hand.
“Sit her in the chair and cuff her to it. Then leave us.”
“But Ryuzaki?!” one replied, worried by the change in L’s demeanor.
“I said leave us!”
They did as they were told and left the room. L pulled another chair up in front of Oki and sat down.
The silence filled the room as L just sat and stared into Oki’s eyes. They were like that for thirty minutes before L finally shook his head.
“Twenty more minutes, Oki. Then you can sit here with me and watch us all die.”
Oki just smiled at him.
“Oki, stop this. It is not going to work. L is going to hold you here until the last minute. He is going to force us to kill them. You do not want that,” Amaterasu told her.
“I still have my trump card to play,” Oki said to Amaterasu while looking her direction. L looked over at the nothing that Oki was talking to, then slowly looked back at Oki.
“Your trump card?”
“Yes L, my father taught me to always have a trump card when entering into negotiations with someone.”
“Negotiations? What are we negotiating Oki?” L asked her.
“Kira…”
L’s eyes lit up, “So you do know who Kira is?”
Oki said nothing as L looked at her. Her cold hard stare had never changed the entire time he’d had her bound to the chair.
“Two minutes, Oki.” L told her as he turned towards the clock.
“Tell me Oki. I will give you whatever you wish. Just tell me who Kira is.”
“Release Light and get rid of the idea in your head that he is Kira,” Oki requested.
“No, I cannot do that. Light is Kira and I know this to be true.”
Oki’s expression narrowed, “Do you? Come here, L. I have something I wish to tell you - something I want only you to hear.” L moved closer to Oki.
“Closer…” she told him.
L was inches from her as Oki leaned toward him. She placed her head beside his and whispered, “I know your real name.”
Oki turned her head towards him as she whispered L’s real name into his ear.
L stumbled backward and fell back in his chair. His face went pale, his eyes wide, and his mouth hung open - shocked.
“H…How… How do you know my name?” L stammered.
“It does not matter how I know. All that matters is that I do know. And that I am not the only one that knows it. There are three others that know it as well. Now… You will release me. I will walk out of here and nothing will happen to you or any of the others. But if I am stopped, arrested or shot down at any time during the remainder of my life, you will be the first to die.”
“What about Light?” L asked, still in shock.
“I think you have enough proof that Light is not Kira. I will let you decide on what to do with him since I am sure that you will make the right choice on this one.”
L unlocked Oki’s cuffs. She got up and walked toward the door, but before she left she turned to look at L.
“I am sorry, L. I did not want to do this, but you gave me no other choice.”
She opened the door and left the room.
L fell back into his chair. His body went limp and he dropped his head back onto the chair.
“How did she know?” L asked himself, “How could she have possibly known?”
