This does sound like it could be interesting, but I sure do hope that Hollywood doesn't butcher the series by adding in lewd jokes like they have been as of late...

I read about this a few weeks ago and saw that Will Smith's kid didn't want to throw in the crane kick, and wants to make the movie more like the video games he plays.
Personally, I think the original Karate Kid is too recent to remake.
As the article mentions, karate did indeed originate from Chinese kenpo and stuff . . . and it's true that people in China do practice karate as much as any other non kung-fu martial art . . . . .
. . . alright, let's look at it this way: what could this new movie teach us?
The original movie taught us that the poor new kid surrounded by rich kids can find balance with himself and his environment with the help of a kooky but ridiculously wise teacher (who lost his family due to complications of birth, no less). All the while he shows that the old, traditional, somewhat spiritual Okinawan ways work plenty well against the newer super-aggressive American adaptations. Alright, cool, good, good . . .
What could the new movie teach us so far? What lesson can a modern, 21st century adaptation of this story tell us now that we didn't need to learn back then?
I'll get back to ya on that . . . can't theorise on an empty stomach.

... I'm not to sure about this. I love the original (and the follow ups weren't too bad).
But remaking it? I don't think anyone can compare to Mr. Miyagi... And setting it in China... I just don't know.
I hope it lives up to my expectations whenever it comes out.
(Though Will Smith's kid seems like a bit of an odd choice, in my opinion.)
If they make it too cheesy I'll have to be pretty ticked. After all, I basically picked up karate because of that movie.

@red tigress:
As a martial artist myself, that makes me want to slap the kid.

Will's son seems like such a weird choice for that role.

I would find it funny if the orignial Karate Kid became the sensei in this new version. Student becoming master and all that.
