I hate parents like this. It ticks me off that this mom blamed her lack of parenting skills on manga. She should have checked if the manga was age appropriate for her child.
XD. obviously. works all the time!
gosh, parents against anime/manga piss me off. it's just a hobby (sometimes a lifestyle) and it's the kids choice to be interested in it. i think it's the mother that made her kid go phyco, if you ask me.
i'm still happy that they kept the manga though :>

We have something like this at the nearby public library as well. But the chairs aren't very comfy and it's mostly comic books. But at least they have something for teens now!
You have a point there, but if a mom was enough of a psycho intruder bitch to assume that manga had made her child crazy, and then enough to sue the library for having it, then who knows what might cause her to sue something else?
Actually, I agree with this decision, too many people assume that all manga, simply because it looks cartoonish or because they're comics, is suitable for young readers, when in fact many titles out there are rated for teen or "older teen" audiences, so I agree that manga and things at the same level need to be in a specific section for their proper age groups. Because parents nowadays are apparently too lazy or too "busy" to be parents and actually look for themselves before assuming that certain content if okay for their kids.
but seriously, I'm so tired of industries like manga and video games getting a bad rap for situations like this that are mostly if not entirely the fault of the parents. both industries do a LOT of rating, and all the manga I've seen on library and store shelves has had ratings somewhere on the cover stating what age groups they're appropriate for (similar to the ESRB ratings on vid games) word of advice mommies and Daddies, if it says "older teen" on the cover, there's probably a reason for it, and maybe they're trying to tell you to think twice about letting your kid read it.
yeah, Manga is often violent and/or suggestive, therefore sanctioning is necessary, but parents need to start being freakin' parents, and get a little more involved.
Yeah, that's true, but at least this way a parent can't raise a big stink about their kid getting "corrupted" without it being pointed out to them that they're the ones who let their child wander off into a section specifically marked as for older patrons.
No system is perfect, the trick is to design it so the people who break it have to take responsibility.
Oh, for the love of--are you serious?? That isn't going to solve the problem! Don't little kids always want what the 'big kids' have? And who's saying that some little kid isn't gonna wander in there??
Sorrry if I'm coming across as negative, but let's be realistic, people!
@ Ace: Thanks for the Monty Python quote; I'm sure we were pretty much all thinking that.
From what the teenagers at my local library are like, they could care less about soft chairs and 'study nooks'. All they want is to get on the computers and write crap to each other on their Facebooks, or make noise so being there is nearly intolerable for decent humans.
That's a lot better than other libraries have. My city's library has a few shelving units they call the "young adult" section squished in the same room where all the baby-to-childrens books are. It makes looking for manga (that is never shelved properly) and teen books all the more awkward.
Actually, that sounds like a perfectly logical solution. I hope other libraries follow suit, in fact. Bookstores are separated into age group sections as well as genre sections, so why shouldn't libraries follow suit?

I'm glad that the ban didn't go through, and sane teens got something useful out of the situation.

That's what my local library has. A "teen" section with beanbags and comfy chairs, young adult fiction and graphic novels.

I agree that it's a good compromise! I'd hate if one day my library had manga, and then the next, it was gone.
Teen section?
Haruhi's in that section at Barnes and Noble. Is it as scarring as Gantz? Not to me...Kei

No, you totally have a right. I don't know why I keep writing it that way.
