I hate it when I read an article or something about how females are now becoming a large gaming fan base. It's not that statement that bothers me, but the fact that all the details are about how game developers are making "beauty" and "fashion" games and that is the sole purpose of why there is a female gaming fan base. Also, they make it out that females are gaming only now. They seem to forget that we've been gaming since games were invented.
i think that women need better gams that are more female oriented. and i dont mean like pricesses and dollhouses with candy bows on it. no i mean kick ass, stong, in your face women with an actuale personality that is both strong and confident.
i've been gaming for years and while its true that not many games are for the female gender that does not mean that you cant just play what they have. i no plenty of great games that havemales as the lead character.
something i believe needs to be discussed is the fact that the female characters in other games wear practicly no clothing and that they lack an actual personality. if they do the usually fall into chategories of seductive, dizy, girly and will have fake preportions. rarly do i ever see a three demensional character with clothes that are not demeaning.
I believe that females in video games do need more development, though, in my opinion, it doesn't really matter if the protagonist (or the character you mostly play as) is male or female. But I believe it all boils down to whether females are all that important to video games in general. Typically, females are the lesser characters which can sometimes be discouraging to me, especially when they have room for development. I'm neither saying women should be always be the most important or the backgorund characters. I just think that women should be developed more than just a playboy bunny.
Us females deserve more appreciation in video gaming. That does it, the second I graduate with my degree in Game Art and Animation I'm going to create a video game so ridiculously awesome and female oriented that it will blow this problem right out of the water!
Thanks for the article, its an interesting read. I'm a woman that has been playing video games since I was young girl. There only a handful of games where you are given the option to be a female, and personally, I get happy when I'm able to be a female character in the game.
It is ridiculous the amount negative criticism a woman will receive when she is on a ID that indicates that she is a woman. Especially when the game is really competitive, like shooters.
I just wish they would give us a break, and realize that it is not a "boys only club"!
I have been playing games for some time now, my first console being a Commodore 64, and yes, I am a girl; a quite girly girl and I honestly don't care who I play as in a game, as long as it's fun and well made it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Even with games franchises such as Dead or Alive where the girls have ridiculous anatomies that wobble with every move whilst wearing next to nothing it's a case of getting on with it!
However having empowered women in games is more likely to attract more female gamers because hopeless ladies in bikinis is getting boring.

Ladies, I can suggest a few good games with (modestly proportioned and clothed) female PC options if it counts for anything. Good luck finding several of them, though.
The Digimon World games for Nintendo DS gives you a gender selection option. It's pretty fun if you're into Digimon. The only problem is the translations are a bit lazy, so the characters will still refer to you as "he" from time to time. It's also a turn-based RP, so if that's not your thing, you might want to pass.
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology for PSP has a basic character creation option, so you can somewhat customize your appearance on top of selecting your gender. It's an RPG based on the Tales series engine, so it has real-time battles, which are pretty fun. Anything in the Tales series can count, too. I don't think there's one with an actual female main character, but you have the option of replacing the main player character with another party member at any time, and most of them have at least one decent female fighter who isn't fanservice incarnate (Presea from Symphonia, Anise from Abyss, Farah from Eternia). Good luck finding these, though. Namdai doesn't really give the series much of a chance outside of Japan.
And Dragon Quest IX for DS has a full-on character creation mode as well as armor that changes your actual appearance. There are some fanservice-y ones, like a dancer's bikini, but for the most part, the bust sizes aren't outrageous and they have some nice outfits to play around with. Still, this one is another turn-based RPG, so it might not be your cup of tea.
As for the article itself, I'm kind of surprised to hear that women play Tomb Raider. I swear, Lara's chest has its own gravitational pull at this point.
the reason why is because when they made the second game, they included the technology that reads off of your profile from the first game and apply it all to the second one. alot of details and choices from the first game and includes it into the gameplay and the story of the sequel. AND they are doing that for the third game as well, which i cant wait for it to come out.
What I've noticed is that usually when they put female characters in video games, they make them more appealing to the boys, which completely contradicts the two-gender audience they were shooting for XDD I mean, I'm very tired of seeing girls with monster curves, with a trying-to-be-asian-cutie personality, nerves of sugar, tiny thong bikini, horny, or trying too hard to be manly. At least Street Fighter made their women realistic and appealing to both girls and guys. They like fighting and never take any crap. But nowadays it's all... sailor fukus and love letters... Gackt.
Now I wanna go play some SNES. The REAL games.

The biggest thing I worry about has been stated already. Even if the companies do decide to ship more games towards girls, the character designs might leave something to be desired, like clothes.
I do enjoy the odd female main character, but as with most other girl gamers I know, A game is a game. If we like it, we play it.
Example: There's this girl in Final Fantasy (Love the games, but.) She barely has ANY clothes! Whenever someone has little to no clothes on, I always say, "She should go get some new clothes."
ladies, take note, a guy is speaking up and sharing an option for ya:
Depending on the kind of games you like, there is a game called Mass Effect out there that has supreme detail in creating your character, and in choices you make regarding what you say and how the people around you react. and yes, the character you play can be either guy or girl. i highly suggest this game to anyone! also... there is a sequel to it, but start with the first one before you play the second one. if you want to know why, ask me! id be glad to tell you

That's part of why I like the Pokemon games; they give you the option to be female (well, they have since Crystal). And the female designs, while more often than not sporting short shorts and/or skirts, are not boobtastic or flaunting off junk. I appreciate that.

Technically, there are some low-cut necklines in the Rune Factory ones, if you count them. Oddly enough, you can't usually marry those women, though.

I'm female and to be honest I don't really mind that most characters are male. What's wrong playing as a hottie?
