well... it only said that this will happen in the tokyo metropolitan assembly for only one day, and in the big anime events. no other days and places were mentioned, so we might not have to worry about this extending everywhere full time anyway.

Apart from that, several manga creators have also voiced their opposition with the new bill, including Fujiko Fujio A, Leiji Matsumoto, Tetsuya Chiba, and Tite Kubo.
Well, the "Spice and Wolf" manga follows the seinen demographic genre (according to onemanga), and seinen stuff target mature male readers while josei manga and light novels target mature female readers. It's just that when the "Spice and Wolf" manga and anime got licensed for North America distribution, the Anime version was rated TV-14 based on how its North American distributor FUNimation Entertainment judge the content with the "Spice and Wolf" manga and light novels being rated Mature (18+) by book publisher Yen Press.

I'm pretty sure he means in terms of thematic content. Spice and Wolf has a romantic story, but it also has lots and lots of economic discussions. Not sure how many teens are riveted by economics. :p
What if they smack each other around a bit while doing the deed? I bet that would be OK. Oh ho ho.
Unfortunately, there is not much we can do other than to hope that a) The law is not applied so broadly as to stifle creative expression, or b) If it is, that a higher court of some sort can strike the law down. (I'm not entirely certain how Japanese laws and courts function, so I don't know how that scenario would progress.)
Anyway, blah blah blah, I think the law is dumb and misguided at best, dangerous at worst. People should police their own intake of media and not rely on the government to do it for them.
yeah...I think this might be a case of over-regulating...but I'm not too awful concerned, the manga authors are creative, hopefully they'll pick up, work with it, and continue to be great at what they do.
...Did any bad ever come from children reading manga that was too old for their age group?...Sure didn't do me wrong at all...O.o; And there is also the internet...so...yeah, the bill is worthless in trying to change anything, but it's destructive to creative publishers....>.> Such a stupid idea.
i actually think it's a good idea. perverted children will have to find somewhere else to get their hands on porn, and maybe some of the artists will realize that drawing naughty bits ISN'T required in anime/manga.
yes i know, "freedom of speech" and "expression" is running through everyone's minds, but perversion isn't always expression, it's a fetish, and im tired of seeing it. im pretty sure many of you are, too.
violence, on the other hand, is entirely fine. it's MUCH better than boobie jokes we see in every other anime show. i'd say okay, if it's violent, feel free to go all out. i really hate it when they think, "oh, it's too violent!" and remove all the gore, but they do nothing to the sexual references. shouldn't it be the other way around? maturity does not play any role in sexuality. it's not funny at all.

wow.. why was i so stupid to say this ._. *faints*

I agree with you completely-- the 18+ or 16+ manga should be kept to the age bracket it was assigned. I don't see the problem with that! I mean, if we openly admit that it is for mature readers, why should just anyone be allowed to read it? it isn't good for the children. And really, if the adults there are as irresponsible as the adults here, like you mentioned, it really wont end up making a big difference, will it?
I dont see why anyone should really be freaking out about this, honestly. I mean, i guess the psychos that wanna insist it's "personal freedom" and whatnot, but they're crazy anyhow. I mean, seriously, do thirteen year olds need "personal freedom" to read porn-style managa? NO. do 16 year olds need "personal freedom" to read porn-style manga? NO. Granted, not all 16+ or 18+ manga is slutty or dirty, but a lot of it is, and we shouldn't WANT the kids reading that kind of thing anyway, should we? Other than that, what is the big deal? I just don't get it.
Speaking of which, TimeChaser, it that's case, then it seems like as if Japanese parents who let their minor-aged children buy Anime tapes with 18+ labels are just as irresponsible as American parents who allow their minor-aged children buy parental advisory CDs without adult supervision. If this irresponsibility doesn't get resolved soon, I fear that the youth ordinance bill may also cause the death of anime franchises that are entirely for grown ups (ex: "Gundam", "Spice and Wolf", "K-On!", "Ikki Tousen", "Space Battleship Yamato", "Lupin III", etc.) because of Anime/Manga creators becoming afraid to continue their works.

This feels a lot like what the PMRC tried to do with the music industry here in the '80s. You can tell the anime/manga industry to self-regulate, to put warning labels on products, but you can't stop fans from still buying it. Just like Parental Advisory stickers on CDs don't stop kids from still buying the music.
The speed by which they passed the bill made me think of an Eden of The East cellphone wish, one that would upset the world of the NEETs and call them to action.
If a title ends up being rated 18+, then what's stopping the author from going all out with the content. No need to hold back with the violence either, make it rain blood like Hellsing. Maybe then the 18+ aisle will have stuff with some okay plot and story instead of the usual junk (Looking at you M.D. Geist).

Looks like the boycott by the publishers will continue on. If it fails, it may mean the death of Anime, or at least Anime that are partly/entirely for kids. This bill is likely to create a dark age of complications for Anime, and suppose this leads to the birth of Anime that turn out to be not as good as the one's of today or before?
