I am going to go out on a limb and assume the reviewer has NOT read the Earthsea novels by Ursula LeGuin.
Hayao Miyazaki wanted this project back in the 80's. Unfortunately, for anime and LeGuin fans everywhere, Junior didn't do anyone any justice. In interviews, LeGuin basically says the movie is nice to look at but "incoherent," and lacking in both plot and message.
Check out the books. Not only because the books are awesome, but also to further your disdain for this adaptation!
I think it's not god-awful, but it's not incredible. It's natural that people will let their criticisms rape this movie because, as Hayao's son, Goro can't have any room to suck. They're not the same person, so there's was no reason to expect this movie to be absolutely and perfectly amazing.
*sigh* So much time wasted on something that could have been awesome...pity, but I'm sure the little Miyazaki will get back on his feet sooner or later. He's got very high expectations from his fathers' status so it's hard to imagine what kind of pressure junior is going through (if it even affects him at all). But at least he tried...I guess.
Wow...honestly expected better. I thought it'd be a great movie...but I guess every director is entitled to a screw up here and there.
Hopefully, he's learned from his mistake and will put more effort into making a more original film. Better luck next time, Goro~
No i agree with you, i just think its good for his first movie. its not great but does have some potential with a clean!. but i think its a stupid way to think that he will do the same as his father, when clearly he's not. overall i give him props for trying.
Hm, sounds like it is one of the not Ghibli movies, but I still can't wait to see it! I just hope that the next Ghibli movies will not go with the same mistakes...
It certainly isn't going to ever be in my favourite list, but I did enjoy it. I saw it at the cinema, it was pretty... Not a Ghibli masterpiece as I was expecting, but still watchable. Perhaps i'm easily impressed by things? ...

I think perhaps if this had been done by Miyazaki Senior, it could have been a great thing. What it sounds like is that Goro has completely failed to do justice to what many consider a fantasy classic.

Yikes. Sounds like the sort of movie that makes you feel like two precious hours of your life were just stolen. Do not want.

XD That is just sad. Maybe he was just to excited to make something as groundbreaking as his father's work was......I'm still tempted to see it
