Firstly, very sorry to Eric - I love you but I gotta go with Ed..FMA is awesome, although some of the episodes make us want to throw ourselves off a bridge. We still love it.
ED ALL THE WAY!!! he is more kawaii, he fights better, and he is just.... ALL THE WAY BETTER!!!! I ruv him ^^ Geez im such a fangirl... anywyas... yeah you go ed!!!!!!!
I'm gonna have to go with Ash; he's been around longer, he definitely opened doors for anime worldwide, and he has an ever-growing, unlimited number of critters to fight for him. Ed's not quite there yet.
Ed all the way. This is how I'm deciding...
What would Ed do in Ash's shoes? Pretty much the same things Ash has done.
What would Ash do in Ed's shoes? Probably make a bunch of noble speeches before getting himself killed.
I have a full debate of the two characters in my Life and Times of Y world. I tell you this now because it is way too long to put up in the comments section. Long story short, Edward is just a little bit better than Ash, despite the fact that I have watched more of the Pokemon franchise.
Even though Pokemon was the 1st anime I watched, FMA is also nostalgic for me because it and Inyuasha were the 1st non-kiddy anime I ever watched. I use to love Pokemon as a show but I never liked Ash that much, I greatly prefer Ed.
It is true that Ash is an older character, but he's also immature and not a very good influence on society... On the other hand, Edward is much more mature and encourages people to fight against oppression. All in all, Edward is the better character in my mind, but believe me, I have nothing against Ash.
I chose Ash. His character may not have much depth and he may be reincarnated each season but Pokemon was the first anime I watched and I still love the original even if the spin-offs are increasingly lame.
Being a Pokemon fan for nearly 13 years now, I most definitely have a more emotional connection with Ash - however, when you factor in all the other character traits to consider there is only one answer here: Edward Elric.
Ash has been reincarnated so many times for so many seasons and non-canon movies that he has become more of an entity than a character. In every new region (or alternate universe) Ash cuts ties to everyone (and every Pokemon except Pikachu), and is written from scratch like a constant cycle of death and rebirth. In a way, Ash is like the poorly managed anime version of Doctor Who.
He is everywhere and nowhere, he is Ash.
In each series, Edward does genuinely grow as a person and never forgets a his friends, especially Hughes and Nina.
Ash is what made my childhood fun so I'm voting Ash,Sorry Ed, even if Ed had more of a storyline you HAVE to consider the age frame Pokemon was made for it's not like Ash could have a past like Ed does and the anime still be kid friendly!, even though I don't like the spin offs., and it's not like FMA doesn't have other versions that people compare to the original,Which is a waste of time because in my opinion the original is pretty much always better no big anime is pretty much immune from drawn out newer versions...
I want to be the very best, that Ash never wasssssss-
To find the Philosopher's Stone is my quest, to save Al is my causeeee-
I will travel across the land, searching far and wideeeee-
Whoa! Musical moment there.
I had to let that out.

Though Ash does have a special place in my heart, considering that Pokemon has a very special place in my heart, looking at this without allowing nostalgia and personal feelings getting in the way, from a purely literary standpoint, Ed is the better character here. So my vote went to Ed without a second thought.
Sorry ash but, Edward has so much depth while you... yea you have just stayed the same through the years. even your story is the same all they do is add new friends and new challenges to get through but other that that nothing changes.Ed on the other hand has so much more going on. thanks ash for introducing me to anime but Ed is so much better thn you.
I like both animes, but Ed's attributes are more better and strong. And if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have learned all those threats I say to people when they calll me short!
Sorry Ash, though you were my first ever anime love, Ed had more drive than you. Come ON, he lost his mother, his bro's body, and one leg and arm! He deserves it, sorry Ash. ♥
Never watched Pokemon and i never will so its gotta be ed for me.. and now that you revealed the voting method, I still say Luffy will beat spike, in my own little world that is..haha anywho GO LUFFY!! Im just glad that if Luffy does lose that it will be to a badass such as Spike and not one of the lamer characters on here..not that there are many but i do see a few and that's totally just my personal opinion.. =P
Edward all the way. The things he's had to go through, how well he handles it, his determination, how much he cares for his brother, what he's willing to do for him, just everything about him. He's definitely one of, if not the best anime character that there's ever been!

Edward wins. Ash was wonderful character and told us a lot of lessons about teamwork and friendship. However, the story surrounding Edward is much deeper. Part of that is the audience but I don't think Ash has the strength for Edward has. Edward's story is full of grey characters and probes into our minds. Edward himself struggles inside with a lot of what he sees on his journey; I don't remember seeing that same struggle with Ash.
I had to pick Ed. Ed really matures and changes a lot, and Ash... well, yes, I did love Pokemon as a kid and more than likely thought of Ash as my hero xD Ash, however, isn't really as genuine as Shorty D:

This was easy and obvious: it's Ed. He's a real character, more of a genuine person than Ash, who is just part of a marketing scheme to sell a card game.
