Kenshin he is an awesome character and i just love him L i do like him and his ways but i knew kenshin first, and he brought me into the anime world and he's kick ass :3
A repenting swordsman, with a dark past and a fierce desire to protect the ones he loves, vs. the detective who was chained to the world's biggest criminal and still didn't catch him before death-
Kenshin doesn't even need to unsheathe his reverse-blade sword for this round, that he doesn't.
This is the worst pairing ever!! THEY R BOTH AWESOME!!! :( But in my opinion I have to give it to Kenshin -_- When you actually think about it Kenshin fits 6 of the attributes and L only fits 3. When I was younger I always loved how he was always smiling and trying to look on the bright side of things. L's character is pretty analytical....and he doesn't change through out the series. However Death Note is pretty big in the anime world. Still gotta go with Kenshin.
L! L is awesome, Kenshin is somewhat annoying. I don't hate Kenshin, but I don't think he stands out much as a main character. L, on the other hand, is very unique.

I have to say L on this one. Kenshin AND L are both defiantly one of Anime's most Tragic Heros, both putting their lives on the line to protect both those around them and the over all good of the world (L dying from it). Kenshin always seems to fighting demons from his past, putting those around him in danger just by being around. Eventually, he removes himself from the situation, but that gets everyone else upset. This made me a bit upset with Kenshin's character. He's a really sad dude, but stays happy despite that, then he gives in, gets depressed, GAH!!!! Honestly, it's as easy to be mad at this dude as it is to be happy.
L is certainty one of the most unique characters I have ever seen Physically and Personality wise. His character is just so complex and interesting that it blew me away the first time I witnessed him. Although most of his past is a mystery to us, it's what he did while we saw him that made him so unique. I'm also taking in the 3rd live action movie as a reference on judging this. L's character was not only presented in it's fullest by his actor and writer physically and emotionally but went through some of the deepest character development I'd seen ever.
Not exactly a good reason to vote but I respect your decision.
In any case, except maybe if L went up against Spike or Lupin III, I will vote L. He is timeless the same way Sherlock Holmes is timeless. Fifty years from now, we'll probably all be reading an L mystery series. His character is different from anyone on this list. Kenshin is a wonderful character as well but fails to win any originality points for me. The lone samurai who was formerly the greatest assassin in all of Japan. I feel like I have heard this story in Trigun and Castle of Caglistro. Sorry Kenshin. Though you really are an amazing character, my vote goes to L.
I think this is the hardest pair yet! They are equally complex and interesting; equally influential. Still, as much as I love Death Note, I am going with Kenshin. His back story and growth as a character is more dynamic than L.
This one was actually a bit hard for me, since I think both characters are fantastic and well rounded and well constructed. However, Kenshin is the one that leaves a bigger impression, I think. Not only because of the anime, and the influence and weight that it carries (with it getting a green light for a new series, whether or not it is going to be a remake is still unknown), but because of Kenshin himself.
While L does have a rather tragic past, an interesting upbringing, and some character quirks that are really unique and well done, I don't still have the memories of "Oro?" or "That I am," and all of the other verbal ticks that Kenshin had burned into my memory when it comes to L. Nothing about him, in that way, really stood out besides the way he sat.
Kenshin's appearance is also more striking than L's, though they are both easily recognizable. And Kenshin's past, motivations, and beliefs are also all so intricately connected to one another that he, once again, has an edge over L.
And, in the end, Kenshin had a larger impact on me personally. So after taking all of the above into consideration: I went with Kenshin.
My two favorites against each other! D: In the end I voted for L because it specifically says greatest anime character, and I really didn't care for the RuroKen anime. It strayed to far from the manga :/ Meanwhile, I haven't read the Death Note manga, so I don't know how much that was changed. Plus L is my man.
I'm probably thinking about it too much XD But I take my anime seriously. *nods*

An assassin atoning for his past sins, sworn never to harm another person and yet willing to fight for what's right... Or a detective who, as brilliant as he is, gets killed by the bad guy halfway through the story...
Also, Kenshin's been around longer, so that alone bumps his status in this battle.
