FMA is nice anime but i never liked it very much, and well Goku is not my favorite DBZ character ( VEGETA i LOVE you )but he stands for DBZ, my first anime ever, and then you are 6 you dont need much depth in your heros. DBZ got me into anime world and i will always remember it So Goku, GO GO GO !!!!!
Both had a good influence but DBZ was one anime that just an anime that started the whole big boom (not for me, though). I have only seen a few episodes of each and I'm not an Ed fangirl (more of an Alphonse fangril :]). Ed has more of a realistic appeal to me, design wise (he's not overbuff) and has quite a bit more depth. However, I would say DBZ as a whole would be more influencial than just Goku himself. Ed gets my vote.

In my opinion, the answer is an obvious destiny...my vote, and heart, is with edward...though I can see the reason fans would vote for Goku, I just wouldn't be able to pick anyone else...I am trying to say, Please, Please, PLEASE don't pick a character becasue you grew up with him/her...like it's been said, reflect on that person's backstory the accomplishmenst they've made, and the hardships they have faced and overcome. If in the end it comes to "SAILOR MOON" vs. "EDWARD ELRIC" I will vote for edward, because of the tough time he has had. eventhough Sailor moon has been there for me since i was a youngen (3 years old ^^) If you take a few seconds to ponder this as a whole, all the answers will come true to you...I may be wrong, and MAYBE there is a character with a more uplifting and inspiring story than that of the "fullmetal alchemist's" and if it is true, I would love to see it.
can't wait for the results
As much as I followed DB as a kid, I never really thought of Goku as an amazing character...I've been watching some FMA, and I gotta say I really like Ed's character.
So, my vote's for Shorty! 8D
Hmm... this is the first tough vote for me so far.
DBZ was the very first anime I ever got addicted too, and dragonball wasn't far behind.
Both characters have interesting back stories, though Edward's is more depressing and darkly portrayed. Goku's could be too depending on how it is shown though. Personality wise, it's a classic naive goody goody against a more dark, realistic, teenage way of thinking. Both are childish and protective.
Goku has most definitely influenced me more, but Ed has a more involved, intense storyline.
uuuuggghh.
My heart says Goku, but my head says Ed.
Screw it, I'm sitting this one out and going to eat some cookies.

Goku is getting my vote and to those saying they don't know who to vote for, then sit it out. *shrugs* But please to others, this isn't politics saying "Vote Ed" come on, this is all fun and games so we shall see who is the victor though personally my faith is in DBZ because it has made many animes into what they are today.
I will admit, this is one match up that I'm kind of dreading the results for. Honestly, I feel one of these guys deserves to win much more than the other and I'm worried that if he looses the final round will be between the two characters that I feel are the weakest on most of the bullet points listed for consideration.
Then again, as someone mentioned on another thread, it's still a lot of fun and I can take this opportunity to enlarge my list of anime shows to look into. [She says, searching for the silver lining.]
I like comparing how they deal with big things like mortality. When someone close to Goku dies, there's no mourning or farewell, just angry screams and then singing Kumbaya while they go out to find the DragonBalls to skirt death again.
Goku showed us that death is an inconvenience that should be laughed at, and that no matter how big a problem is, it should be dealt with head on.
I used to love Dragonball, it was the very first anime I ever watched and my favourite TV show for years when I was younger. I have very fond memories of watching it with my Dad and getting annoyed when he made fun of the characters' names. So its definately influenced me the most personally... BUT I never really liked Goku...
I sat through every episode of Fullmetal Alchemist after a friend recommended it to me and I enjoyed it but it didn't have much of an impact on me the way Dragonball did. Ed is definately a better character though, in my opinion, and since thats what this is about I guess he gets my vote ^_^
Definitely Goku!! One of the first animes to hit the Western World, it just blow our minds back then and is does even today. Goku was made into an iconic anime character, and I think that anyone who has heard of anime, even if that person hasn't watched DB or DBZ, knows of Goku in some way. True hero and character.^^
When I was a little kid, I hated how DBZ always came on before Pokemon and that I had to suffer through it ; A; I still feel that same way xD;;; *votes Ed*
Some of us are only taking that last bullet-point on the list. Sure, Goku has influenced the world, incredibly so. But, FMA is what got me hooked on anime. Ed had a deeper back story, is more in-depth character, and his motivation throughout the story was so complex. He wanted to get back his and his brother's original bodies, yet has a difficult time knowing the price he would have to pay. On top of that, he handled situations well and sometimes hilariously! He seems more human in his emotions and situations and FMA is influencing the anime world as well. Goku's only ahead there because he's been around longer. FMA is bringing in a newer generation of anime lovers as well, especially with Brotherhood.
My vote's for Ed, personally.
Ed has so many layers he is an onion. Wait.. That doesn't sound good. :c
ANYWAY, I voted because of his major depth and back-story and triumphs blah blah blah. EDWARD ELRIC AND FMA FTW~

Tough choice. Ed has the potential, he has such depth and has impacted the anime world quite a bit, but Goku is anime's history and is what got millions of people into anime....
I have to hand it to Goku. If it weren't for DBZ airing on what used to be called "Toonami," I would never had known the world of anime aside from "Pokemon." And if I had only had the conception of anime through the realm of Pokemon, I wouldn't have lasted very long. So, I owe my anime blood to an amazing classic, DBZ!! WHOOOHOO!

Ed is certainly more emotionally complex, has a more tragic back story, and more personality than "hey look, an evil alien must be defeated because I'm the good guy!", but I honestly have to give this to Goku.
He might not be the most complex character in the world. Hell, he's downright silly. However, Goku and Dragonball Z are what some would automatically think when you hear "anime", or even when you were first getting into anime (I am certainly guilty of this). Sometimes, the more complex character doesn't equate to the best.
I like everyones favorite alchemist just as much as the next guy... but Col. Mustang wasn't on the list. :P
(I must now prepare to barricade my house... twice)
Oh geez, lol Ed is SCREWED...and while I don't like DBZ, I can't say it wouldn't be fair for Goku to take this one, like it or not, he and the entire series has had massive influence over the anime world as a whole.
...though the rabid fans could proove me wrong, could just depend on how what we have more of on this site, DBZ fans, or FMA fans...
Though I'm probably in the minority, especially since DBZ never really influenced me that much personally (though I did watch it as a child), I voted for Ed.
Both series have been influential to the anime community, of course DBZ more so, but I still by my opinion that Ed is the over all better character. He is better developed, more multifaceted, had a more compelling and emotionally pulling back story, and really grew as a character throughout the series (more so than Goku, I believe).
While Ed's motivation may be more selfish than Goku's, I find it more humanistic. His design is also more appealing to me and also more complex than Goku's.
I don't see Ed as being the number one anime character, though I do think he is a better character in general than Goku. This is probably useless though, since Goku is most likely going to end up winning. -0-

It all goes back to the influence for me, and DBZ was Toonami's flagship at that important time, really bringing a lot of kids here into anime.
