(Forgive me for stealing your comments or for anything I may have overlooked). Although I am biased, I have tried to present this unbiasedly so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
appearance - they're both short, have blonde unique hairstyles and dress in a way that makes them recognizable from a distance
Sailor Moon -
character - grew from a weak person into a strong queen
impact - older anime, changed anime to be oriented towards women, started magical girl trend, more recognizable to non anime fans
Edward Elric -
character - earned his own strength, brave, has overcome many harsh hardships, tragic events only make him stronger, has emotional complexity
impact - relates to hardships people go through today: losing loved ones + never giving up
And may I remind everyone that this is the "greatest anime character ever" award not the "greatest series ever" award but I know some people might not care about the logic of all this out of faith towards their character.

In regards to these two, I'd say Sailor Moon had greatness thrust upon her because she never actually chose to become a hero and never sought the power or knowledge to become a hero of her own free will; it was more like she was one of those characters who were "chosen" and who "never asked for this". Or Sailor Moon could be someone who was born with greatness if you consider her past life.
Ed on the other hand actually achieved greatness through his own will with hard work and effort. All of his knowledge, all of his skill with alchemy, all of his fighting ability all came from training, surviving and (shudder) studying.
So although Sailor Moon did work hard to fulfill the great role that was given to her, I vote Edward for seeking and achieving his own greatness.
And no I'm not going to cringe as I wait for the Sailor Moon fans to attack. Bring it on! >:O
Well I guess this isn't the worst two characters it could have ended with, I'm still a little disappointed though. A face off between Goku and Sailor Moon would have been truly epic~

I don't think it's an age thing or a clear cut-off. It's more like, the more you've seen, the more you know.
So it's possible a fifteen year old fan has watched 50 anime series or that a 50 year old anime fan has only seen 15 series.
I'm thinking of it in terms of newer fans vs old school fans. (If you remember a time before Cartoon Network, you're probably an old school fan. If your first anime series was Death Note, you're probably new school.) But everyone realistically falls somewhere in the middle.
the funny thing is, every character i've voted for has gone onto the next round. I did vote for ed and sailor moon in the last round, and now i'm routing for ed. :3 he's alot stronger and alot cooler than sailor moon. though, sailor moon was my very first anime, fullmetal alchemist has changed me alot. fma has inspired me to be a tougher person, and not be a whiny little butt.
Most people would vote for Serena... but i'm voting fore ed since he interested me more. when sailor moon was on i didn't give a crap for the heroine..... i watched it for the other girls since they were better.....
I voted Edward because as a standalone character he's just better to me. Now if it was which anime series is the best of all time then Sailor Moon would win, because it's a legend and without it the anime world wouldn't be the same. But I only saw one episode of it before it was taken off the air, cause that's when we got cable lol. I didn't really like that one episode as it was all about shopping and boys. But everyone else liked the series and it has influenced so many people and things and anime! But FMA was my first anime. And one of my nicknames in life is Edward Elric cause I'm the same height he is lol. I'm gonna stop rambling now.
But honestly I'm happy they both are here. I would've been happier if Spike made it but these two deserve to be here.

I'm surprised that sailor moon actually went this far. I just felt that fans might have forgotten how popular she was back when the show was a hit and would only focus on recent new anime characters (like ichigo, edward,L etc...).
So this is the final round, well I like both Edward and Sailor Moon and I think there should be like a title for both genders and not only one title.
Whoever wins, is the one that I have voted for. Yup.
Depressed that Lelouch didn't win, but it was inevitable. >o<

I will cry if Sailor Moon does not win this. Despite Ed being such a "large impact", I watched the first episode of FMA and died of boredom. Sailor Moon was a HUGE inspiration to me, and a large influence on the anime world. She will forever be an anime idol of my life. <3

I was just thinking that describing Lelouch as a magical boy might give people who don't know him or haven't seen the series a different impression (more like the magical boys that I pointed out) than what the series and his character actually is or something like that. Though I see where you're coming from to with your classification of a magical boy.
Trying to get this back on topic, I voted for Sailor Moon in the end. Though I won't be overly upset if Ed wins, since I think he is better than Lelouch or Ichigo. But also don't see Ed or Sailor Moon as completely fitting this title of greatest anime character (Sailor Moon is closer though). I thought Spike was best fit for that (or Kenshin or even Vash). Oh well.
It's been very interesting to see how everyone has been voting though and how it has essentially turned into a Generation Y vs. Generation Z anime showdown.
Personally, I think of magical boys as any boys with supernatural powers. But yes, it's not like he has the other classic magical girl characteristics like a cute talking animal side kick or a transformation sequence or anything like that.
And I agree - there are major differences between Death Note and Code Geass, but I find the overall themes are similar. If you like Code Geass, you might like Spiral too! The main character is more of a strategist, much like Lelouch.

@Star Petals: I wouldn't call Lelouch a magical boy. Takuto from Star Driver on the other hand *is* a magical boy. Even the males from Pretear could be seen more as "magical boys" than Lelouch and many consider Daisuke from DNAngel to be one as well.
Lelouch to me is just a Chess Master who got some supernatural help. He is similar to Light in that way, and it didn't help that Code Geass and Death Note were being broadcast during the same anime season, so a lot of people compared the two to each other. Though I, personally, see a lot of differences between the two, but going into details like that would end up being spoilerish for both series so I'll refrain.
Basically, I just think magical boy isn't quite the proper way to describe Lelouch (though everything else you said about him is dead on).

Lelouch is the main character from the series Code Geass. The show gained popularity stateside because it aired on Adult Swim. In Japan, the show was sponsored by Pizza Hut and the characters were designed by CLAMP. It is a typical tale of vigilante justice.
Lelouch is an exiled prince, posing as a high school boy, who creates an alter ego (much like Batman, Spiderman, etc) and gets some vigilante-style justice by waging war against his father. They fight in giant robots. Oh, an he is what I like to call a magical boy. He uses mind control powers to manipulate his friends and family, sometimes resulting in people dying.

Isn't the fact that they made it INTO the competition a reward in and of itself? I mean... C'mon! So your favorite character didn't make it... the fact that they were nominated that often should say SOMETHING.

I love Edward Elric and FMA, I really do. FMA was my first favorite anime, and it did get me hooked. But, I know I can't learn all I need to about Usagi just from watching some clips on YT and reading what others are saying.

after a long time of thinking...some looking back, and reflecting on both characters...i have made a decision...there have been things from both characters that make them suitable for the role of "greatest anime character ever" I will show you some of my reasons for voting the way I did, but I will not show my preference. she has been through much heartbreak. her life in the silver millennium was a quiet and peaceful time, when suddenly, her whole life changed. the man she loved was whisked into a war, leaving her stranded. she lost her memories, had them brought back, and messed up in the process. Her deep friendship with everyone Is the reason for her own faults many times. Also, her friendship has been what made her strong. She and her friends must do what they can to save the future *crystal Tokyo* made weary by the evil forces out to ruin their otherwise peaceful lives. Her influence on the world of anime has been tremendous. she has helped mold and shape anime from a generally male-oriented group of shows to non-gender specific group of shows. and as much as you may not like her, you have to admit, without her, things would be a lot different.
Edward Elric~ It is true, he has not been around as long as miss Usagi-San has, but in the time he has been here, he has made an enormous footprint on anime. He has made people swoon from his bravery (yes, men too!! don't be afraid to admit it!) the extreme sadness in his life has only made him stronger. He and His brother, Alphonse would do anything to protect each other, so in a way he and sailor moon are quite the same in this field. Edward has overcome many terrible tasks, and has made them the reason for becoming even stronger in spirit. Though his journey at first wasn't to save the world, he was indirectly making it a better place, with each step he took.
Please take the time to learn about both sides, and the full extent of their story before you vote, it may sound like a lot of work, but it is well worth it! ^^ And i hope this helped a little bit

It was so painful to choose between the two ; A; I mean, Sailor Moon was like my childhood hero. My friends and I, for at least 3 years, would spend all our recesses pretending to be in Sailor Moon and I was stuck as Meatball Head, 2 1/2 out of 3 of those years xDDD. BUT ED. I love Ed so much! He's so inspiring and cute and short and adowable <3 He has an amazing storyline behind him, and still keeps his head up when things get rough D: In the end though, only one can reign OTL
Sailor Moon has to win. Besides DBZ Sailor Moon is one of the most influential animes to ever hit the US. You actually have to be an anime fan in the 1st place to even hear about FMA but Sailor Moon was one of those gateway animes. To this day people are still true to the Sailor style. I love FMA, but Ed isn't anywhere near Sailor Moon in fame. So along with the other true anime fans I cast my vote for Sailor Moon. To be honest I dont even know what a Lelouch is and how it got this far in the tourney or how Spike lost to L. How does Ichigo the least interesting thing in his own series make into the best character ever tournament. I would have nominated Yusuke Yurameshi from Yuyu Hakusho because that was another show loved in the US. So yeah I feel sorry for everyone who lost to "Lelouch?". This was either Goku's or Spike's to win but Sailor Moon is still good. Thats just what I think btw. SAILOR MOOOOOOOONNNNN! Lets see Edward Elric be a schoolgirl by day and vanquish foes by moonlight.

He beats Sailor Moon in 7 of the 9 attributes.
Where he doesn't beat her at, he is still strong in those aspects.(Appearance and influence.)

It isn't just the all-girl team that made Sailor Moon unique. Prior to the show, magical girls didn't fight evil. They mostly healed people or used their powers for to put out fires or have wacky adventures. (I do agree with your point that CardCaptor follows its own format though.)
Ok, first off, How did Goku, L, Spike, and Lelouch lose? All of them are obviously more deserving of the title. I mean, Ed and Sailor moon are great and all, and would definitely be in the top 10. But not number 1, get real. This contest doesn't make sense anymore. Though I love FMA, and I love Ed, (as much as I respect Sailor moon, I don't like her at all),I'm not gonna bother wasting my time voting on this one. Neither of them are deserving of it.

I dont know how Ed came so far... There was many better characters here... Lulu and Sailor Moon had to be in final. Well seeing that Lulu is eliminated i vote for Sailor Moon, her influence to all girls is huge.
Decisions. Hm. I love both characters and they have a bit more common. Usagi and Ed have different backstories, true, but they have lost people. In Usagi's previous life, she lost her people as well as her own life. Ed lost his mother and attempted to bring her back. Both characters have lost family and friends though Usagi had lost them several times, at least three times, if I'm counting right previous life, against Queen Byrl in season 1, and in Sailor Stars. Ed and Usagi have died at least once and got brought back, both by their wishes.

No, actually, Cardcaptor Sakura is different from Sailor Moon. Just thought I'd throw that in there, hun. But, yes, Sailor Moon did begin the Magic Girl Band of Five idea that is explored in Tokyo Mew Mew, Wedding Girl Peach, and others of the genre.
If someone is more familiar with one of the characters and really likes them, I doubt reading and watching stuff can change their mind; maybe if someone equally unfamiliar with both did that, it would allow them to make up their mind. But my vote, of course, goes to Edward!! :D I knew it from the very beginning, so, sorry, five minutes are redundant.

I knew Ed would have made it to the Final Four, but I didn't expect the Final Fight would have him to be honest...
For this final one, I would personally like to see the number of votes each of them got. I think seeing by how much the winner won by would be interesting to behold.
This one is actually rather hard, since I don't particularly think either one is the most fitting for the title, though both are more fitting than the other two were.
Sailor Moon has definitely had more influence (personally and on the anime community as a whole) and she has Ed beat in appearance (her's is definitely more eye popping).
In other areas however, Ed has Sailor Moon beat. Mostly in characterization, character growth, and emotional complexity.
Though they seem to be about even in areas such as background, motivation, and even how they handled difficult situations.
When it comes to the title of "Best Anime Character" should influence be the most important factor? Should characterization? A bit of both? Or should it be which character best represents what anime really is and what anime really can be?
I'll have to really think about this one before I decide...

the funny thing is, every character i've voted for has gone onto the next round. I did vote for ed and sailor moon in the last round, and now i'm routing for ed. :3 he's alot stronger and alot cooler than sailor moon. though, sailor moon was my very first anime, fullmetal alchemist has changed me alot. fma has inspired me to be a tougher person, and not be a whiny little butt.

I voted Edward because as a standalone character he's just better to me. Now if it was which anime series is the best of all time then Sailor Moon would win, because it's a legend and without it the anime world wouldn't be the same. But I only saw one episode of it before it was taken off the air, cause that's when we got cable lol. I didn't really like that one episode as it was all about shopping and boys. But everyone else liked the series and it has influenced so many people and things and anime! But FMA was my first anime. And one of my nicknames in life is Edward Elric cause I'm the same height he is lol. I'm gonna stop rambling now.
But honestly I'm happy they both are here. I would've been happier if Spike made it but these two deserve to be here.

I'm surprised that sailor moon actually went this far. I just felt that fans might have forgotten how popular she was back when the show was a hit and would only focus on recent new anime characters (like ichigo, edward,L etc...).
So this is the final round, well I like both Edward and Sailor Moon and I think there should be like a title for both genders and not only one title.
Whoever wins, is the one that I have voted for. Yup.

I will cry if Sailor Moon does not win this. Despite Ed being such a "large impact", I watched the first episode of FMA and died of boredom. Sailor Moon was a HUGE inspiration to me, and a large influence on the anime world. She will forever be an anime idol of my life. <3

@Star Petals: I've watched Spiral and one of my friends loves it! It's actually been a long time since I've watched it though...
I was just thinking that describing Lelouch as a magical boy might give people who don't know him or haven't seen the series a different impression (more like the magical boys that I pointed out) than what the series and his character actually is or something like that. Though I see where you're coming from to with your classification of a magical boy.
Trying to get this back on topic, I voted for Sailor Moon in the end. Though I won't be overly upset if Ed wins, since I think he is better than Lelouch or Ichigo. But also don't see Ed or Sailor Moon as completely fitting this title of greatest anime character (Sailor Moon is closer though). I thought Spike was best fit for that (or Kenshin or even Vash). Oh well.
It's been very interesting to see how everyone has been voting though and how it has essentially turned into a Generation Y vs. Generation Z anime showdown.

And I agree - there are major differences between Death Note and Code Geass, but I find the overall themes are similar. If you like Code Geass, you might like Spiral too! The main character is more of a strategist, much like Lelouch.

Even the males from Pretear could be seen more as "magical boys" than Lelouch and many consider Daisuke from DNAngel to be one as well.
Lelouch to me is just a Chess Master who got some supernatural help. He is similar to Light in that way, and it didn't help that Code Geass and Death Note were being broadcast during the same anime season, so a lot of people compared the two to each other. Though I, personally, see a lot of differences between the two, but going into details like that would end up being spoilerish for both series so I'll refrain.
Basically, I just think magical boy isn't quite the proper way to describe Lelouch (though everything else you said about him is dead on).

Lelouch is the main character from the series Code Geass. The show gained popularity stateside because it aired on Adult Swim. In Japan, the show was sponsored by Pizza Hut and the characters were designed by CLAMP. It is a typical tale of vigilante justice.
Lelouch is an exiled prince, posing as a high school boy, who creates an alter ego (much like Batman, Spiderman, etc) and gets some vigilante-style justice by waging war against his father. They fight in giant robots. Oh, an he is what I like to call a magical boy. He uses mind control powers to manipulate his friends and family, sometimes resulting in people dying.
It was a pretty okay show.

Isn't the fact that they made it INTO the competition a reward in and of itself? I mean... C'mon! So your favorite character didn't make it... the fact that they were nominated that often should say SOMETHING.
I'm not voting this round.
I love Edward Elric and FMA, I really do. FMA was my first favorite anime, and it did get me hooked. But, I know I can't learn all I need to about Usagi just from watching some clips on YT and reading what others are saying.
Basically, I think I'm TOO biased.

after a long time of thinking...some looking back, and reflecting on both characters...i have made a decision...there have been things from both characters that make them suitable for the role of "greatest anime character ever" I will show you some of my reasons for voting the way I did, but I will not show my preference. I hope this helps some of you who don't know who to vote for.
Sailor Moon~
she has been through much heartbreak. her life in the silver millennium was a quiet and peaceful time, when suddenly, her whole life changed. the man she loved was whisked into a war, leaving her stranded. she lost her memories, had them brought back, and messed up in the process. Her deep friendship with everyone Is the reason for her own faults many times. Also, her friendship has been what made her strong. She and her friends must do what they can to save the future *crystal Tokyo* made weary by the evil forces out to ruin their otherwise peaceful lives. Her influence on the world of anime has been tremendous. she has helped mold and shape anime from a generally male-oriented group of shows to non-gender specific group of shows. and as much as you may not like her, you have to admit, without her, things would be a lot different.
Edward Elric~ It is true, he has not been around as long as miss Usagi-San has, but in the time he has been here, he has made an enormous footprint on anime. He has made people swoon from his bravery (yes, men too!! don't be afraid to admit it!) the extreme sadness in his life has only made him stronger. He and His brother, Alphonse would do anything to protect each other, so in a way he and sailor moon are quite the same in this field. Edward has overcome many terrible tasks, and has made them the reason for becoming even stronger in spirit. Though his journey at first wasn't to save the world, he was indirectly making it a better place, with each step he took.
Please take the time to learn about both sides, and the full extent of their story before you vote, it may sound like a lot of work, but it is well worth it! ^^ And i hope this helped a little bit

Sailor Moon has to win. Besides DBZ Sailor Moon is one of the most influential animes to ever hit the US. You actually have to be an anime fan in the 1st place to even hear about FMA but Sailor Moon was one of those gateway animes. To this day people are still true to the Sailor style. I love FMA, but Ed isn't anywhere near Sailor Moon in fame. So along with the other true anime fans I cast my vote for Sailor Moon. To be honest I dont even know what a Lelouch is and how it got this far in the tourney or how Spike lost to L. How does Ichigo the least interesting thing in his own series make into the best character ever tournament. I would have nominated Yusuke Yurameshi from Yuyu Hakusho because that was another show loved in the US. So yeah I feel sorry for everyone who lost to "Lelouch?". This was either Goku's or Spike's to win but Sailor Moon is still good. Thats just what I think btw. SAILOR MOOOOOOOONNNNN! Lets see Edward Elric be a schoolgirl by day and vanquish foes by moonlight.

It isn't just the all-girl team that made Sailor Moon unique. Prior to the show, magical girls didn't fight evil. They mostly healed people or used their powers for to put out fires or have wacky adventures. (I do agree with your point that CardCaptor follows its own format though.)

Ok, first off, How did Goku, L, Spike, and Lelouch lose? All of them are obviously more deserving of the title. I mean, Ed and Sailor moon are great and all, and would definitely be in the top 10. But not number 1, get real. This contest doesn't make sense anymore. Though I love FMA, and I love Ed, (as much as I respect Sailor moon, I don't like her at all),I'm not gonna bother wasting my time voting on this one. Neither of them are deserving of it.

Decisions. Hm. I love both characters and they have a bit more common. Usagi and Ed have different backstories, true, but they have lost people. In Usagi's previous life, she lost her people as well as her own life. Ed lost his mother and attempted to bring her back. Both characters have lost family and friends though Usagi had lost them several times, at least three times, if I'm counting right previous life, against Queen Byrl in season 1, and in Sailor Stars. Ed and Usagi have died at least once and got brought back, both by their wishes.

This one is actually rather hard, since I don't particularly think either one is the most fitting for the title, though both are more fitting than the other two were.
Sailor Moon has definitely had more influence (personally and on the anime community as a whole) and she has Ed beat in appearance (her's is definitely more eye popping).
In other areas however, Ed has Sailor Moon beat. Mostly in characterization, character growth, and emotional complexity.
Though they seem to be about even in areas such as background, motivation, and even how they handled difficult situations.
When it comes to the title of "Best Anime Character" should influence be the most important factor? Should characterization? A bit of both? Or should it be which character best represents what anime really is and what anime really can be?
I'll have to really think about this one before I decide...
