I'm so glad Ed beat Sailor Moon! I was hoping either Lelouch or L would win, but I like Ed too so I'm not too disappointed. I'm actually pretty surprised he won.
I think next time, we shouldn't pit characters against each other. Then, just like in the high school yearbook, it becomes a popularity contest.
Next time, what if we could assign a grading scale to the criteria? Then, each member could choose what they think is fair for each character. After the results are tallied, we could figure from there which character is best.
Then, again, there may be an issue of fans putting high marks for EVERY aspect of their favorite character, and none for characters they don't know anything about... But, might that even it out a little bit? ;:/
I also would like to apologize to the old school anime fans. It would have been more fair if we did this accourding to time. I did notice about who voted where and DID see a lot of fan girlism going on. *sigh* I for one, am not one of those. Thank you for your comments.
@Kikyoaburame: Kamina is from a series called Gurren Lagann, which is basically a deconstruction and then reconstruction of the Mecha/Giant Robot genre. It is a very good anime and Kamina is an awesome character in it, though it’s not necessarily his personality that makes him awesome (since it is rather the same old loud mouth Shounen type of character), but how his character brought about major character development in the other characters in the series and really moved along the plot. I definitely think you should give the series a shot. :)
@cannon21: I agree with you that Vash would have been a good choice as well (I also would have been quite pleased if Kenshin had won too). Though, I do think that Ed is definitely one of the better newer characters and I’m not wholly upset that he beat Sailor Moon. I’m also in agreement with you on that point based system.
I also think it would be interesting if there was a poll and listing done for each anime season, such as this one that was done in Japan: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-06-13/biglobe-poll/favorite-character-in-spring-2011-anime, where only characters from the current season are polled and ranked. It would be a nice way to see the fan favorite characters as well as introduce fans of anime to the newest offerings, so when competitions such as this one pop up there will be less “who is such and such character?” Though, I don’t really know what could be done to help introduce newer anime fans to older, classic anime series and characters. : /

I missed the comment boom on this one but here's my two cents~ I think this could have ended much worse than it did. I would have preferred Sailor Moon win but this result isn't too bad either. That, and you all need to go watch Cowboy Bebop so you can understand who should have won this hands down~ ;D
"Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead."
Very true, Spike is an obvious choice but he got paired up with an irritating shonen jump character too early in this(I can say the same for Vash) for this to be a rational measurement of awesomeness as far as characters go, there would need to be a point-based system measuring each characteristic mentioned where people rated all of the characteristics of each on different days, not pitting each of them against each other, and not "I think this character is cuter than the other" or "he could totally beat him up", if it was judged based on a long llook into all of their personalities, complexities, falls and triumphs, and not by popularity, Vash and Spike would be hands down the two greatest characters of all time.
I'm glad Edward won, and it was hard picking for the person i thought was best. and sailor moon, i know you was loved when we were kids, but, well... your actually not that great..... no offense to sailor moon fans...
I was only half serious about the fan girl factor, so I hope I didn't offend you or anyone else! And I respect that some members didn't vote when they felt they didn't know the characters or couldn't decide. Still, the only unaffected battles were the Ed battles. Why?
But that is part of what complicates a survey like this - how many people knew all 16 series well? If only people who knew both characters really well were able to vote, then maybe only 100 people would be able to vote, and it would still be skewed. There isn't a real solution unless someone normalizes the results statistically which would be CRAZY cuz this was all just for fun!
I know there were some rounds I didn't participate in. It was either because I couldn't choose which contestant I liked better, or because I didn't know one of the contestants well enough to make a fair decision. I'm sure there are many others who had this same issue, which would explain why some voted in the Ed rounds and not in others.
Ed got more votes in his first battle than the total number of votes in some of the other battles, which means some voters only participated in Ed-related battles.
In the Lelouch vs Ichigo battle, there were only 394 votes TOTAL. Only Ed-related battles had more than 600 votes.
There are approximately 100 voters who only participated when Ed's name was involved. Maybe they don't know any show other than FMA and couldn't vote 'fairly' OR maybe they didn't bother with the other battles because they only care about Ed. Either way, in my mind, those are "popularity" votes AKA the fan girl factor.
When normalized for the fan girl factor, the battle results are much closer. Ed defeated Sailor Moon by like, 75 votes + a fan girl factor of 100.
Ed would still be the clear winner, which is cool because he is a good character, although, like you, I voted for Sailor Moon.
I kinda wished the vote was a little closer...those crushing votes are kind of insulting 0_0!,I'm happy Ed won Even though I voted Sailor moon I just wish it was a little closer I would have even settled for a 100 votes difference XD!
WOW!! I'm a bit shocked at how ed was the definite fan fave throughout the whole competition, I mean look at the numbers, every time he won it was by smashing his opponent in to the ground with votes...
I must admit, i'm happy to see him win, though i also would have been happy to see sailor moon win
but wow... he decimated the compitition...
I'm just a bit surprised is all...
I still think "popularity" was mixed with "greatest" in this contest. I'm happy that Ed won, but I think people underestimated Sailor Moon. FMA is fresh and recent, with a unique plot and with deep characters. Sailor Moon, despite this tournament, will still be an iconic anime forever.
Yay! Ed won! ^.^ He totally deserves it, not that Sailor Moon doesn't. I would have been happy either way, but I still prefer Ed. He's one of the best anime characters I've ever come across. The vote between L and Kenshin was tough. Maybe I should have voted for Kenshin...
Honestly, I am not happy with this. I understand people's reasoning for saying Ed is good, but I really don't like him. I can't relate to him in the least, and frankly, I find him kind of annoying (No offence)... In my opinion, he acts on emotions too much, and that bugs me. In the real world, life isn't like that... Either way, congrats to everyone that voted for him^^
Personally, the person I thought was the best didn't even get into the main voting, but that's life, right?^^
Lastly, I really don't mean to start any fights, just putting in my two cents >.<
Well, I'm satisfied with Ed winning the title. In a way, he is an interesting and iconic character from a show that, 10 years later, may be regarded as an anime classic in the same way that Sailor Moon is treated today.
If people really want a rematch, you may want to consider the instant-runoff voting system for the top 16 finalists instead of the usual competition-type voting. Voters would choose who is the greatest for them, followed by the second-greatest and so on. Whoever gets voted by more than 50 percent of the voters gets the title; if no character reaches it, we use the votes for second-greatest character and so on until one of them gets 50%.
But then again, it's gonna make it sound like more of an election than just voting for fun.
No doubt Ed is a great character. There are some who are better though, but didn't get enough spotlight. I was dissapointed not to see Gally from Gunnm. But that wasn't unexpected, since she had only 52 minutes to introduce herself. Still, those 52 minutes were sufficient for her to develop signifacantly more than ANY of the characters mentioned here. Also, some characters were neglected because they are not the main characters in a series. Aramaki Daisuke from Ghost in the Shell can be considered a better character than Alucard or even Spike (maybe), but being in the shadow of Kusanagi Motoko he was overlooked. Puting a shallow character like Ichigo or Naruto over him is... Any anime character is great... as long as he/she leaves a strong impression on the viewers. Still, congrats Ed!
I am disappointed (of course) but Ed absolutely deserve that title, more than some others in that contest. But still less than Kenshin or Sailor Moon or Ash.
Ah, I still can't believe Kenshin lost against L... ;__;
Sigh. I saw this one coming from the start. It really comes down to is visibility to the overall community. Meaning if Sailor Moon (or other older characters) were still airing or if they had computer rendered animation instead of hand drawn traditional cels, they might have had a better run. I also think the DIC/Geneon/Cloverway dubs damaged Sailor Moon's street cred. She's more emotionally complex than the dub lets on.
I think this was slanted towards a shonen character winning. Afterall, aside from Sailor Moon, there wasn't a single shoujo character in this battle. And Adult Swim doesn't air shoujo.
I really like both characters, although my heart will always belong to Sailor Moon. If anyone still thinks she hasn't suffered, check out episodes 195 - 197. She and Ed actually go through very similar experiences and have very similar personalities.
I'm glad that one of these two won. They're both characters that I know and love. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. But I do agree that they should split it up because there is a complete bias as many of theo's population are female teenagers that grew up with Pokemon or were brought in by FMA, Naruto, Bleach, ect.
Meh. I just can't believe he won by such a landslide. I will still think Sailor Moon is better. XD She really was the foundation of anime becoming popular/known in the US...maybe her personality isn't as deep, but eh. Oh well.
There is a lot more than just "fan girls" voting, and people can't seem to see that. I'm a girl, a huge Edward fan, but not a fan girl. I voted for HIM because he fits the criteria better. Serena deserves to have gotten far in this contest, but I feel (and clearly others did, NOT JUST FAN GIRLS) that he deserved to win.
It makes me happy that Kenshin almost made it past the first round.
Also, yay Edward! All the "blame the fangirls" comments are kind of annoying to me too, because I've never had the slightest fangirlish inclination for Ed (Envy on the other hand)-- and still voted for him. Sangome does have a point, though, and if Lelouch had beaten Sailor Moon I probably would have been blaming fangirls too. :/
YAY ED BEAT SAILOR MOON!!!!! ^^ He wasn't my first pic....I wanted Spike to win :( Cowboy Bebop is an awesome classic that I loved to watch when I was younger. But I didn't want Sailor Moon to win either. Sure she was popular with girls and is herself a classic, but her character wasn't all that dynamic >.> She did the same thing like every episode. Bad guy appeared, she did her lil pose and play changing theme music, Tuxedo Mask would show up throw his rose, the scouts would win and bam that was it.....every episode. So all in all I am very happy Ed won. Full Metal Alchemist has brought anime and manga back into the light a lil. It's one everyone knows and the characters evolve through out the series and are confronted with questions about life and death and how there is a price for everything. So if you have a problem with this outcome (although I'm not clear why) then I'm sorry.
Right X3 Although I do believe that we all as voters should give ample thought next time as well, even if we do have our own favorite characters =eue= I'm still kicking myself for voting for one character over another due to some aspects I thought were good at the time, but after rethinking it, I was like "HOLY CRAP! Why did I choose him over him?! D=>" Ha... =^_^;= Well, next time =P
I agree with you on the "blaming the fangirls". Anime characters are created to be well like (some though not all), example: Edward the winner of the greatest anime character. :)
totally agree with Kitty KO. i mean, this was done through popularity votes right? im sure we all have our own personal prefrences, but its a community.
There's always next time! :)
But I still think the title should have been split between the two. One for the Greatest female anime character and one for the Greatest male anime character :)
Oh well...
I agree with you. The newer anime characters take time to fall in love with, but the majority of the characters on that list hold a special place in my heart because they were apart of my childhood...
It's easier to say the best character of this year than it is of all time...>3>
Either way, either the fangirls are to blame, or those of the younger generation. *is part of the younger generation* Sailor Moon will forever be the greatest anime character of all time, to me. <3
Digital Neko (Otaku Eternal) | Posted 06/11/11 | Reply
I really think that in a sense, Ed does deserve the title, considering what he's gone through as a character. Sailor Moon is definitely iconic (as almost anyone from my generation would know her theme song at least by tune), and although the show may not be what the mainstream would be into, let's not forget that it is an older show that has set the bar to step up from. So thinking of it from that perspective, I would say most people voted from an entertainment value angle. Many people don't have time to watch something that's not "modern." I'm not raggin' on anyone for that, as it's everyone's preference as to what they want to watch. However, I do disagree with all the "blame the fangirls" or other extreme view from either side. Really, fangirls (and faboys, for that matter) exist because a character was created that has the charisthma for likeability. So in a sense, they're voting for who they think is great. Also, (a final thought) one can't vote for a character one hasn't watched and immersed themselves in. That said, yes, a majority of the voters most likely watch more modern anime, thus explain a majority of the outcomes.
Sorry for the long-winded comment XD; Just getting some thoughts out, there. That said, it was a good battle =3 If we're not satisfied this time, then let's all vote again next year, ne? X3

Maybe next year I would recommend doing all characters from things that aired THAT year. :/ I think that this was weighted heavily on the age and sex demographic of this site, and that keeping the contestants within a certain category would attempt to even out that REALLY OBVIOUS bias that teenage girls put on this.
I was expecting the votes between Ed and the sailor to be a LOT closer, but I'm all good with Ed winning c:
Though what somewhat shocks me is how Sesshomaru beat Kamina with 331 votes. Guess either there were people who secretly voted for Sesshy or what.
I'll admit, there are a lot of members here who've only seen post-2000 anime and probably didn't even KNOW who characters like Spike or Vash were and might have made a quick choice without even taking a good look at older characters, but what can you do, really? :/
I express deep disappointment in the results of this battle, because the character that I voted for did not win the completely inconsequential title. Furthermore, I would like to imply that everyone who did vote for the winner is foolish and dumb and the internet would be better off without them. Sorry, but that's the only possible reason for anyone to disagree with my personal opinion.

I hate that people blame the fangirls. Edward DID fit all of the criteria. Some people actually gave this some thought. And YES I am a "younger" fan...I never watched Sailor Moon as a child...but I watched it after I got into anime because it is a "classic"...and I thought it was a horrid show. -A-
Congrats Ed! I'm surprised how strong he was all along! :3
(And Naruto was really close to beating Lulu)
430-255... I was expecting something a little closer but... I'm glad Edward won. He beats Sailor Moon in all the criteria except for influence/impact, but his is quite strong too. Although fangirls probably made up a lot of his votes, he is deserving of the title.
Madman With a Box (Otaku Eternal) | Posted 06/11/11 | Reply
Is there anyway to do a recall? :V
This really did boil down to a generational thing, and as I thought it seems younger fans who are more influenced by post-2000 anime make up a majority of this site.
Wow! The L and Kenshin one was far closer than I thought it was going to be.
Ed winning is showing the change of times. -0- I would have preferred if Sailor Moon had won over him, but then again I would have preferred if Spike had won over both of them. Ed getting this title doesn't feel quite right to me.
Perhaps its because I see him as fulfilling the characterization requirements, but not the influence or impact requirements that Sailor Moon fulfilled. Of course, this goes in the opposite direction as well, Sailor Moon most definitely fulfilled the influence and impact requirements, but was lacking in the characterization department.
I felt as if Spike fulfilled both.
Nevertheless, I congratulate Ed's win and am glad for all those who voted for him. :)

I said it once and I say it again: it wasn't an easy tournamnet for people for vote but one character in anime had to win the title from theOtaku.com.
Wonder what would it be like if there was a tie in the end of the final tournament battle.

I would have thought Sailor Moon would have more votes or at least Ed and Sailor Moon would have a close result, but I guess not.

I'm also happy to see how close the results were between Sailor Moon and Sebastian, after people were saying he didn't deserve to be there. ^_^

But still less than Kenshin or Sailor Moon
or Ash.Ah, I still can't believe Kenshin lost against L... ;__;

@TimeChaser:
Overall, I think this was a fun idea!

Though if I had to choose one character from the entire tournament to win, it would've been Kenshin. Ah well.
