It's definitely about the money with Disney. Their being family-friendly hasn't stopped lots of their child stars (Miley Cyrus, Lindsey Lohan) from turning incredibly trashy.
Totally! Peter Jackson won Oscars for the Lord of the Rings movies, yet one of his earliest films, Meet the Feebles, was one of the most disturbing and disgusting movies I've ever seen! (It's like a twisted version of the Muppets, with porn, drugs, murder, etc.)
Sounds like a decent deal. Every artist will draw something inappropriate at some point in their career, whether they make it public or not. I think Disney made a good decision and deciding on using Nishimata's artwork for their new sales ploy.
