Having a glimpse of what actually went on at Aperture, they'd be better off not doing that.
As for GLaDOS, well... you'd think that because of Jurassic Park people wouldn't dare tamper with prehistoric DNA, and yet there are scientists doing just that. Thankfully, as a general rule, computers are only as smart as the person who programs them. At least for now, anyway... >_>
Very exciting news - anything that brings a cure closer to reality.
Hey folks, don't knock scientists. Remember that the game was programmed by scientists such that the rules of the 'puzzle' reflected a very sophisticated understanding of molecular biology and were based on the rules that regulate protein structure. Gamers with no background in science wouldn't have figured it out on their own either. Both the scientists who were open-minded enough to tap another set of minds and the gamers who successfully identified the crystalline structure deserve credit.
Since source links don't seem to work anymore, can anyone throw a link with the entire story my way? Without more context, I'm not sure what's involved here. Sounds good, though.

@Allamorph:
Right! That is the real triumph - seeing members of different 'communities' (scientists and gamers) working together for the greater good!

Okay, with some choice key-words, I found the item mentioned: "Gamers Decode AIDS Protein That Stumped Researchers For 15 Years In Just 3 Weeks"
Wow, now the update says that a group got an accurate modelling in only 10 days, finishing well before the 3 week deadline! Great stuff, indeed.
