Well now I'd say I improved a whole lot to the point where it doesn't take me an hour to draw and its still enjoyable and something I want to make a career out of.
My time on theO and the internet in general showed me a lot about myself and how I want my art to be and how I want to grow and shape my future pieces.
In fact I learned more about drawing online than offline, and it really helps if you can't afford to be taught. Teaching yourself to draw for free is pretty rad. The only thing I can really say it takes to improve is this:
It doesn't matter if it's 'your style': You have to learn the basics to truly make it your own, otherwise you'll only slow yourself down.
Only take constructive criticism: Don't listen to people who only put you down, if someone can give you something to work off of, do it. 'This sucks' doesn't cut it, 'The arms a little off' is alright, 'The arms a bit too long, usually you determine the correct length by...' is exactly what you have to look to.
IF YOU IGNORE LEGITIMATE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM DON'T EXPECT TO GET ANY BETTER
and finally,
You have to love it what you do: You're your worst critic but if you want to dedicate your life to art you have to never forget you love it. Don't let anything or anyone stop you, not even yourself.
There are a fair number people I think have improved over the past few years. I shall have to make a list... I can't even fit everyone on that I wish to ._. but here is a start, at least.
Everyone here has made vast improvements in what they do. I have noticed many artist grow since their joining and most have already been nominated. My field of expertise may not be with the "graphic" side of theO, but I would like to nominate Kitabug69.
Kita's wallpapers were never too fancy to begin with. Simplicity is key with her works. Something I find a lot of us steer away from. We get too distracted with details and start slapping on textures left and right, eventually destroying the main focus of the piece all together. With her works, we know what the main focus is right away.
Her over all composition has improved, and she does something most do not. She makes her own vectors.
Training your eye to notice what works for you and what doesn't is very difficult, but I think Kita is slowly finding that medium.
It's been a while since I've looked back on my portfolio... After hundreds of submissions over five years, I've improved immensely. Lots and lots of practice!! My style may have changed countless times, but its still me, and what I wanted to portray at the time.
I feel like I'm too old to qualify for this. Although my very very old submissions are from pre-registration and therefore don't exist anymore, my oldest piece in the port is from 2003. I don't think 12-year-old Kat thought she'd be making stuff like this almost exactly nine years later, but for school rather than during it.

I know I haven't been very active here lately, but I definitely was on DeviantArt... I love how my traditional works just have a very old, almost nostalgic feel to them. I would draw to escape the world, but now it's almost like a therapy still. I've moved on to digital art finally, almost completely, but I still try to keep sketchbooks around all the time and still doodle on paper, too. I just love the feel of brushing away the little eraser dusts... that's one thing digital tablets like bamboo wacoms can never compete with...
I like to think I've learned A LOT over the past few years since I've joined theO. I still come back here though, because if it wasn't for TheO, I would have never discovered my desire to learn graphic design, which I am now trying to major in at college. Basically I have theOtaku.com to thank for setting the spark to all my dreams. If it weren't for you guys, I wouldn't be who I am today. It would be a totally different and possibly dark story if I didn't draw as much as I do. So, from the depths of my heart, I thank you all. I was able to get even this far (though I still think I'm not that great of an artist) because of this site. So, thank you. :)

So many people improved in here, I honestly think that almost everyone on this site should be nominated. Even artists who were great at first are greater now...
I would like to nominate everyone several artists, me included:
That list looks long but I know there are more and more people that I could have added. The common point between all of them (+ me) is that they learned (and I personally learned from their works) how to use quality scans and make gorgeous works out of it, they learned how to edit pictures and not to just paste text on it and that's it. They can now place their text in an entertaining and original way and they know also now how to use a texture/pattern, how to blend it to fit their works... You can see that it looks also way cleaner now. And I would like to think that I improved in that way too, not as well as the others, obviously, but I know it's better now. So, thank you to TheO!
Ah its ok! And I like your new improved style better too! You are an amazing artist, and you're so young too! *u*
Xavier is awesome, some day I must draw him! ^_^
And that is so sweet of you for thinking of me too! ^///^ *hugs*
When I first joined it was in 2008. I was mainly on for the quizzes until 2009 where a friend of mine in school showed me the community chat. I didn't talk much but the past two years I've grown to make friends, who became like family to me, watch more animes and roleplaying. I even started making e-cards and wallpapers. I'm so glad I joined theOtaku.com or I wouldn't have made the friends I have now. :D
I'm a member since 2009 and I can say that theO made an impact on me as an artist. I discovered wallpapers and e-cards here! xD
First wallie. (ugly uuugly!) Old wallie. Not so recent wallie but I haven't done much wallpapers recently so I chose this one to compare. :'D
Gosh, I'm bad at making wallpapers but I made a lot and improved a bit (it's really fun to make them! <3)
But I'm a true blue [fan] artist. And this and this were some of my early works that I was 'proud' of. But seeing them now makes me wonder if my eyesight was failing me all those times. xDDD;
Most of my drawings were like this even. o_________________o;;
And in comparison to my recent works like this, this and this, well, of course there is improvement. xD
Art-wise, I discovered the wonders of photoshop, digital art, vectors, brushes, and SAI. I eventually became more active in deviantart as well. But I still continued to be on theO because the people are awesome here. ;w; I learned RP here too.
I grew up in theO. It's like family to me. But I'm drifting away though. Q_____________Q
Got sooo busy in life (already in college.)
Yes, I wus a teenie-weenie high schooler when I first become part of theO. :')
I've been here since the beginning of my really drawing career... so this place had a huge impact on me and revealing my art to the internet. Back in 2004 when I joined I didn't have a scanner, but I have pictures posted from 2005 here :D
Traditional 2005 2012
I also liked it here because on deviantart, it was too easy to get lost in the giant sea of artists there. here, it was more like a small group of friendly artists... not like on DA where it was pretty intimidating, but you weren't afraid to talk to the members here.
I don't have much else to say, but when people are discouraged about thier art and go and say "I wish i could draw like you", I link them to my otaku page so they can see for themselves that we all start somewhere u. u

I’ve been on theO for over 8 years now, and I’m happy to say I’ve improved a lot over that time! >This< was one of my earliest submissions here in 2004, and >this< is my most recent, submitted last week. It’s been a wonderful 8 years and I’m so grateful to theO and all my fellow Otaku-ians for all the inspiration they’ve provided and support they've given Here’s to more improvement!
I have no idea who to nominate, because i've come across countless people over the years (some that are still here, and some who arent) that have all shaped and helped build my journey here on Theotaku. I remember many years ago when i was finally able to upload some of my artwork here (some good, some bad) and i was just really glad that i was able to share it with other people, even if it wasnt the greatest. I also remember a number of years later i started making wallpapers. My first few wallpapers were just horrible, but i'm glad to say that over the years i was able to make a few that i was proud of. I remember i had hit a crossroads where i though i had run out of creativity, but when i turned to making wallpapers it really made me realize that i still had something to offer after all these years.
I remember when Theotaku first implemented the "Member" feature and i was so glad to join because i had been following the site for quite a while before then. I also remember being an obscure member as well. I would try so hard to post alot and add as many friends as i could during the Myotaku days, and i always wanted to be a popular member with alot of friends. I wanted to be right up there with Adam and everyone else, and i was always checking the member rankings to see if i'd ever work my way up to being one of the top members lol.
My adventure here on Theotaku has also traveled parallel with the adventure of my Anime Collection.
I started my Anime Collection between the years of 1998 - 1999 while i was still in school. I'd come home from school everyday and i'd record as many episodes as i could. I recorded anime episodes, movies, promos, commercials, anything that was anime related. As the years passed on, my collection grew, and it continues to grow even to this day.
I don't know if i'll ever be considered one of the top members here on Theotaku, but i do know that i'll always be here, and i'll always be buying older anime titles, and i'll always be recording anime from tv and posting about my exploits on one of my random worlds here on the site.
I'm glad to be a member here, and i'm also glad that i've been a part of the site for such a long time.
I have a notebook with photocopies of pics and fan art from the original Theotaku site many years ago, along with transparencies. I recently opened up the notebook and spread out the pictures and made a video of them as a type of historical homage to the site. Older members will probably notice some of the photocopies, but a majority of the members will most likely have no clue where they came from. I still think it's a cool thing to check out for members new and old.
I might nominate myself for...wallpapers and/or e-cards, but I'm not going to. XD But I really wanna nominate Aishia. I know she said she didn't have some of her old art on here, but she does! This one is from 2007 she said: BEFORE. And here is one of her newest ones, which I am biased towards since it's of me and her hehe: AFTER. She is an amazing friend and an equally amazing artist. She works hard at her craft and isn't afraid to take constructive comments and learn and keep practicing to improve on her own. And she has improved with each and every drawing, I swear, although I always loved her art. She uses old-school techniques of paper and colored pencil but then also incorporates digital techniques as well.
Everyone's improved so much since I've first met them on theO! ;u; Even people who are crazy good, like King-sama. I hope he doesn't mind me sharing this, but [here's] one of his early artworks in colored pencil. Now check out [one of his most recent artworks].
*^* Now if that's not improvement, I don't know what is. xD
As for me, my most recent upload is a line art... so here's a before and after of how I do line arts: [BEFORE!][AFTER!]
And here's a color before and after just for the heck of it: [BEFORE!][AFTER!]
Being on theO has really helped me get better at drawing. :D It's great getting to know people and see their artwork and graphics develop over time!

I think I have improved a lot over the past several years of being here on the Otaku. Here is a before wallpaper I made way back in 2007 and here is my after wallpaper. My technique in my wallpapers has changed so much. It used to be I would just throw random images, brushes, and other things together.Plus back then I didn't know much about making wallpapers. But I improved over time. Now I have over 600 wallpapers(and counting). I've also had a lot of help and advice along the way. I would like to take the time to mention a few people who have helped me with my wallpapers.
Sweetdevil:She was always giving me great advice and also she's really improved on her style of wallpapers as well. Here's a wallpaper she made in 2007. Here's a wallpaper she made this summer. Sweetdevil is always improving her technique and she has been a great inspiration to me and my work. Thank you Sweetdevil for being so amazing!
MangaKid:I think she also has improved a lot in her artwork as well. She's come along ways in her style and now she draws digitally. I wish I could draw digitally like her. MangaKid is one of my best friends here on the Otaku. Here's here before artwork and her after recent artwork.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me and inspired me to become the artist I am today. A special thanks to MangaKid and Sweetdevil. Without out your help and encouragement I don't think I would be the person I am today.

After years on theO, I like to think that I've improved since my first submissions. I recently redrew an old picture, and I'm proud of my improvement although I know I still have much to learn. (Old picture) (New redrawn picture) Even though the new picture is digital art, I still believe I have improved my traditional skills as well (recent colored pencil piece).
Another member whom I would like to nominate littlepooch. I think she has improved greatly over the years and I always love to see her continue to advance with each new work. Here's an old work of her's and here is a new one.
No problem, Soren-chan!! I noticed ur old art is a lot different then your new art, those samples u picked are awesome comparison!! I think its neat how ur style shows in the old artwork too tho... the new one of Xavier looks brilliant!! *u*
AH I didn't mean to forget! lol u have no art tho xD but your stories!!! OuO I nominate you for being bet improved story-teller! even though when you started writing stories, you were much better then me already... now you're an even more super writer! ^_^
Oh and I also want to nominate my sister KK Slider who doesn't have much art on theO yet but she's been working on new art all the time and she's gotten really good from when she first started out^^
This gives me a good excuse to go back and look at my old works. Most of them are really embarrassing to look at but they are part of the process of improvement I suppose.
I don't think I've even redrawn any of my works except for sketches... childhood redrawn
But I do have a summary of art from when I first started digital art SOA
They're really crappy compared to my more recent ones but I haven't been able to improve as much now as I had in the past. new work

It's really not that hard to see how I've improved if you're curious enough to go back and look at my first wallpapers. I can't even believe I thought those were amazing back then. OTL I entered a contest with this as the theme and so here is an example: Old Version New Version
A member I have been watching improve in bounds when it comes to fanart is SaiKat
*Nominating Myself*
I actually did a redraw of one of my old artworks not too long ago, just uploaded on theO here ~ http://www.theotaku.com/fanart/view/390634/before_and_after
I'm embarrassed by the left side uwu

It may not be a huge improvement, but I can definitely say that I've improved (especially over the last 5 years). I feel as though my artwork has gone from a cartoonish appearance to more of a semi-realistic approach, especially with anatomies.
I think everybody have improve! :D I know this won't help much.....but it's the truth.
As in for me, I think I have not improve.... I look at my old work and compare it to the newer ones and it's like what the hell? I think it's because I have been trying new styles and such
I am Delin! (Otaku Eternal) | Posted 10/03/12 | Reply
Well, I'd kinda like to nominate myself as well.
When I was still a little nooblet, I thought it would be cool to try and do cards and walls. I always thought that Graphics would be fun. I think I have come a long way from when I first started off till now.
I have gone from this to this. I would say that is a pretty big jump for me.
So cool!! I love seeing all these before and after pictures that show improvement!! ^_^ Everyone has worked so hard!
If not for theO, I would never have improved in art, let alone specifically manga/anime style. Here is one of my first wanna be bishie shoujo guys xD and Here is my latest Kaji in digital!! xD
Also there are so many people I've seen make much improvement in their art, wallies, and ecards! Its just awesome and inspires me so much more!! Ichi Haze is one of the artists who has improved in leaps and bounds in such a short time! Here is one of her first realism drawings and Here is one of my recent favourites that she drew! She's always improving!
I can mention a lot more people... like yumei hearts u, FallenAngel01, and many others <3... wish I had the time to link up their before and after art too! But keep it up, all of u!! <3
Also major kudos and thankyou to ItachiSasuke for mentioning me in her comment here! It was her who kept me on theO when I first joined and inspired me to improve and work harder!! Thankyou Bonnie! Thankyou Otaku! <3
I'd like to believe I've improved a lot the past 3-4 years c: My first, or at least one of my first since my actual first pic I edited two years ago(sorry you have to see the horrible anatomy and badly-done MS Paint art)
My latest two aren't exactly my best yet, so have my third most recent :D
I would like to think that I have improved.
Some of my first wallpapers, like this one, were simply an extracted image (which I wasn't very good at) placed over a pre-made background. Very few bells and whistles were added and I wouldn't play with any effects.
Then there are my much newer wallpapers, like this one. The background was made from scratch using the copious amounts of brushes I have downloaded and me learning several new (ie. much better) ways to extract images. It's not quite as obvious with this wallpaper, but I also do play a little more with the colors/effects.

Ohh dear~ I've improved quite a lot since i started here like 4 years ago!! Speaking of which, my 4 year anniversary is coming up~ xD
So here is one of my earliest wallpapers- HERE
I remember when i first started making wallpapers I thought these were like the most spectacular things on the Internet. I would get my friends who didn't have an account to go on and see them and everything~
Here's my most recent wallpaper HERE
Now adays i don't think anything of it. I just make them out of boredom and just post them. Before it used to take me a couple of hours just to put a layer and a border on a scan. But now i'm rendering scans, vectoring them, making my own textures, actions, everything~ And that only takes me half an hour!! Also i now have a tablet so it's easier to do things on Photoshop than with a mouse :S
I remembered, when I got my first E-card published and that Lucifer wife (Who is sadly not on TheO anymore) supported me. My first E-card was a simple one, not having used much effects It was also too simple.. I started playing with effects and use different textures, ending up.
Whit my resent non-gif E-card, I used and played with effects. I love the colours and still hope to improve with using paint.net.
Also the same with my wallpapers/Iphone wallpapers or fanfiction, that it ends well.
And I wish everyone who wants to improve good luck.
I like to believe I've improved from back when I did this (I'm sorry you had to see that), to this. It's not much, but I did develop a better sense of proportion and depth. I truly want to believe this.
Edit: my apologies for the double post.

I think I've improved a lot since I've been here. This was posted about six years ago when I first joined theOtaku.com. This is one of my most recent works of art.
I Like doing comics more, but I've been doing just drawings more so I guess I'll do those >This< I knew it didn't really look good but I was proud of it anyway... That was around the time I got my Tablet *old*
and for the recent >This< now This is what I am proud of!
TheOtaku played a BIG part in my art. So many nice people encouraging me to get better. And This is the site that made me realise that I wanted to make comics!
Well...it's been about 6 years since then so improvement was inevitable...*shrugs*
Haha! XD But this is a coincidence since I was just looking through my old files of stories...and was overcome with embarrassment...they're not on here, thankfully...XD

Back in 2007, I thought that was worthy of posting online XD It's cute buuuuuuuuut...
I could show off my hunger games drawing :P, but that is in a style of realism. So I'll offer up my most recent Sakura and Syaoran drawing which I think has shown my improvement!
Gotta say I've come a long way and grown as an artist and owe it all to theO!Thank you for the motivation and confidence to keep me pressing forward :D Well this is my first oc(as well as my first ever submission!)
After reading this I looked back at the older posts on my World. Nice to see I haven't changed (and may have actually declined steadily).
I'm sure I'll think of more members, but I'll start with one for now: xlolfishx. Here's her first submitted piece to theO: tea is watching you!!, and here's one recent piece: Drinks? Just look at the style on the latter work, the subtle shading on the white areas. It also has this nice motion with the tipping drink.
Look at xlolfishx's portfolio, and you'll see an artist trying and refining new styles and techniques, making each creation all her own.
Oh no, I think it's for everything. :D Fan art, comics, wallpapers, e-cards, even fiction/world posts/etc posted on theO. Fan art is just the easiest example for most people.

There's a bunch of talented people on TheO. Unfortunately, I don't consider myself one of those. lol But if I had to say, I'd nominate infinatelove42. She's done a beautiful job with all her fanart but you can definitely tell the difference between her earlier and later works. There's more poses, more faces, and all around better coloring on the works she's done recently. But this is so unfair to pick the most improved. I think everyone improved since they first joined TheOtaku.
I'd like to nominate myself, haha :D
I feel like because of theO, I've been motivated to improve my art. When I first started, I was using crayola and had a laughable sense of anatomy. Here is my first piece of art.
Once I really opened up to drawing and started using other mediums, I improved on a ton of things - namely anatomy, colouring and Photoshop skills.
So Here's my latest piece, which also happens to be my 100th fanart on this site. I know it's not perfect, and I have a really far way to go. But I feel like this is a huge improvement in three years. Thanks for making this possible, theOtaku.com :)
Whoa...there are a lot of talented artists that have improved! So for me to list every one of them would be hard. However, I'd like to nominate two people who I think have done a remarkable job in improving their artistic skills:
1. Animegirl171. This was her first fan art (even though it's still amazing), and This is something more recent!
2. Mangakid. This is one of her first, and This is a more recent one! So amazing >3<
Take cares~~
Haha, I guess I should also thank those who stood by and encouraged, inspiring and cheered for my works too. Whether I know you well, or not, you've been a remarkable anchor on helping me improve~<3 Thank you all! :D

When I started shading art, I wasn't so good. My work was alright, but it was like a child did it.Here is one of my first works here. But, as time passed, my work became more efficient. Eventually, I was (with the help of the computer) able to create this.
I started drawing manga style art at 11 years old, mostly copies of other artists and only really branched out with my own personal style at 14. I wrote stories and created my own characters, some based off of my own friends. Started out traditionally art-wise and moved into digital style a few years ago. When I began posting my art here, I had no sense of perspective or how to draw backgrounds, i.e. this. It wasn't necessarily bad, just...unpolished. Now I'm making stuff like this, and I am terrifically proud of my improvements in these last four years.

I would like to nominate
everyoneseveral artists, me included:BabyD [Before] [After]
Dark Flame 3479 [Before] [After]
Timcanpy14 [Before] [After]
josephine12cute [Before] [After]
Angel Zakuro [Before] [After]
Ritona Raito [Before] [After]
Felcie [Before] [After]
That list looks long but I know there are more and more people that I could have added.

But I'm a true blue [fan] artist. And this and this were some of my early works that I was 'proud' of. But seeing them now makes me wonder if my eyesight was failing me all those times. xDDD;
Most of my drawings were like this even. o_________________o;;
Thank you theO. You raised me well. :***

I've been here since the beginning of my really drawing career... so this place had a huge impact on me and revealing my art to the internet. Back in 2004 when I joined I didn't have a scanner, but I have pictures posted from 2005 here :D

I also liked it here because on deviantart, it was too easy to get lost in the giant sea of artists there. here, it was more like a small group of friendly artists... not like on DA where it was pretty intimidating, but you weren't afraid to talk to the members here.
I don't have much else to say, but when people are discouraged about thier art and go and say "I wish i could draw like you", I link them to my otaku page so they can see for themselves that we all start somewhere u. u

My Anime Collection in 2003

My Anime Collection in 2012
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l109/Yamcha8/0715120958_01.jpg

*^* Now if that's not improvement, I don't know what is. xD
As for me, my most recent upload is a line art... so here's a before and after of how I do line arts:
[BEFORE!] [AFTER!]
And here's a color before and after just for the heck of it:

It may not be a huge improvement, but I can definitely say that I've improved (especially over the last 5 years). I feel as though my artwork has gone from a cartoonish appearance to more of a semi-realistic approach, especially with anatomies.
For instance, my drawing from 2007 http://www.theotaku.com/fanart/view/291832/old_jirou_katsuo%257Eloser%257Ecover_art_%25282007%2529 can be compared to the re-drawn version of the same character in 2009 http://www.theotaku.com/fanart/view/291695/jirou_katsuo%257Eloser%257E2009_cover_re-make.
However, to see my latest work, you can compare both of the above to one of my projects I completed a few months ago http://www.theotaku.com/fanart/view/382844/ophelio.
As I look back, I am pretty happy with the results. Although, I can't wait to further improve and see where I am maybe even 5 years from now!

Speaking of which, my 4 year anniversary is coming up~ xDSo here is one of my earliest wallpapers- HERE
I remember when i first started making wallpapers I thought these were like the most spectacular things on the Internet.
Also i now have a tablet so it's easier to do things on Photoshop than with a mouse :SC yaz!! ♫

Even though my before and afters are two different mediums, I would like to share...
One of my first pieces, Angelic Demon, was done on 4/25/09. My most recent piece, No Boundaries, was done on 9/15/12.
I believe this is decent improvement, and I still have more work to do :)
