I'm gonna have to say Hinata, too. I used to be able to relate to her fairly well, some of my friends even compared me to her... My shyness level used to be about 10, but I notice that over the years I'm gradually getting over it. I'd say in most situations my shyness level is around 5 now, but it depends - if I'm in an uncomfortable (social) situation with people I don't know it's probably 8, but if I know people well it'll be 3 or so.
a shy charchter i could think of would have to be yuki from harumi suzima, she is quite ,shy ,and has only said about 4-5 wourds the whole anime series.
my shyness is about 10 i never talk to people outside the computer and im kinda.....(quitetly wispering) afraid of people
Adam, you can't just pop up an interesting conversational bit and then tell everyone you're not going into it. I think a discussion on why Asian and Western media approach shyness so drastically differently would be rather interesting.
My favorate shy anime character would have to be Mio Akiyama from K-On! She's shy and mature at times, but with people she knows, she will act friendly.
My own level of shyness would have to (from 1 being total shy to 10 being not shy at all) I would have to say, I'm a level 3. I am super shy when it comes to meeting new people. :P
She's not exactly "shy" per se, but she is quiet, so I'd say Anju from Chibi Vampire(aka Karin). My shyness is probably a four, I'm usually really loud. I'm quiet during classes, though, and I'm shy with new people.
At the beginning of Hajime no Ippo, the main character Ippo Makonouchi was a pretty shy guy who tends to be quiet and have less interaction with his classmates. (Of course, the fact that he had to help out in the family's fishing business is a contributor to that trait of his.) Seeing his character made me see my old self, since I used to be quite shy in interacting with other people before. That eventually led me to become a fan of the series even if I'm no boxing fan.

...lol I'm another one that isn't really into the stereotypical "shy" character in anime, might be because I find it "unrelateable" or something, which is strange because I have my own definite issues in similar areas. I guess when he not all "warrior mode" I consider Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin a little shy/bashful in some social situations, so I'd name him here for the purpose of fav "shy" character, though I think that term is sort of open to interpretation to a point by the viewers.
as far as my own "shyness"...lol that's a tough one, I suppose I could still be considered really shy and have a lot of anxieties related to social situations in a lot of cases, but it varies depending on a lot of different factors, so I can't give it a single number grade XD can sort of be all over the place. I can come across crazy and outgoing in some situations, and then in others I can be really nervous and withdrawn.

I usually love introverted or shy characters;I either relate to them,or enjoy watching them grow in their respective stories
I love it especially when it's a more subtle character trait, such as Asuka Masamune in Otomen or Akihiko in Persona 3.
In my case,my favorite shy person would be one not many will know about (maybe I missed some posts),Kuroki Tomoko from WatashiMote;she's painfully shy and awkward in both a funny and sad way.It hits close to home to see her try to grow out of it so hard.
For dudes,Tsuchiya Kouto (BakaTest) but only for the laughs; For a guy this perverted to be too shy to actually act on it (besides voyeurism, and even then...),it's kinda cute
Due to my low-human-contact upbringing,I grew up introverted, but I'm far more asocial than actually shy,as among my friends,I'm almost the one who does the crazy stuff (not too crazy, but still) to help my shy-er friends,of which I have a lot
Gosh... After scrolling through and reading some comments I'm not even sure... Of course I gotta go with my avi and I love Shota and Sawako and their just awkward shyness.. Even though you probably don't think of Shota as a shy guy Ha...hahahaha..... Gosh I'm so lame.. I think he really is at heart. I mean, while reading the manga I could not stop with the "awwww"ing. They are just the cutest x3
And then Mihashi from Big Windup I LOVE! I seriously just want to give that guy a hug. He's so shy and timid and scared.. Not to mention he comes from an amazing anime! And I think his character is very well put together.
OH! Also Jacuzzi Splot from Baccano! I love. He's such an interesting character with his looks and then personality. To be in the Flying Pussyfoot and all that happening and and and *slapped* Ahem, yes... Jacuzzi!
And then Rei from Doubt (spoiler of Doubt, don't read!: even though she's freaking crazy, I love how shy and cute she was in the beginning :'D Gosh I'm such a sucker for a cute face...
I would say Hinata is definately my all out favorite shy girl, possibly cause I tend to be a cross between her and Kushina?? Anyway, I'm generally a 8 in shyness, but once you get to know me I'm about a 3. ^_^
My favorite shy anime character is Lettuce Midorikawa from Tokyo Mew Mew. She is my favorite character because I can relate to her a lot. I was extremely shy in middle school and I had trouble talking to people and making friends. Also like Lettuce I am extremely clumsy. I have no coordination at all sometimes. Also like Lettuce, I have trouble having in believing in myself sometimes(I've gotten better over the years with having more confidence). She's mainly my favorite shy character because she finds friends who believe in her and won't let her down. She's a true friend and she will always be there for you.
My second favorite shy character is Sho Marafuji(Syrus Truesdale in the English version) from Yu-Gi-Oh GX. At first he is shy, timid, and scared to talk to anybody. But all of this changes when he meets Judai. He often calls Judai "Aniki" which in Japanese translates as older brother. He looks up to Judai like an older brother. Judai helps Sho find the courage to believe in himself and he becomes a great duelist who believes in himself and he is always there for his friends.
My favorite shy character is Ryou Fujibayashi from Clannad. She's so sweet but she barely does anything.
I'd say I'm pretty shy so probably about an 8 or 9. But that's mainly around new people.
Around my friends I'm never shy.
Madman With a Box (Otaku Eternal) | Posted 12/05/12 | Reply
I don't normally like the shy characters, I tend more towards the louder, more up front or goofy personalities. But there are a couple that definitely qualify as shy that I like, and they would be Rakka from Haibane Renmei, and Hagumi "Hagu" Hanamoto from Honey & Clover.
Although Rakka's confidence grows over time, being the new Haibane in the nest surrounded by so many unfamiliar people, she definitely starts out much more introverted. And Hagu is an introvert due to her sheltered upbringing, her tendency toward sickness, and the fact that she has a brilliant artistic mind that many others view with envy rather than understanding.
My own personal shyness has of course fluctuated throughout my life. I was much more shy when I was younger than I am now, although I'd say at its worst my level of shyness would probably qualify as a 7 on a 1-10 scale. It manifests itself these days mainly when I have to call unfamiliar people on the phone. I hate using the phone, its too impersonal.
Sawako Kuronuma from Kimi ni Todoke <3
When I started watching kimi ni todoke, I noticed that my character is exactly the same as Sawako's character. I hate making people mad at me, so I usually keep to my self. Sometimes I have a LOT to say but I hesitate and start thinking if that's the right thing to say or not. Also I get misunderstood sometimes. My shyness level is around 8-9. Since I became a University student I had to try my best and try not to be so shy and quite, it's kind of working, but I'm still a shy person.

The ones i can think of recently are Suiren and Kawasumi from Hibi Chouchou. While they may actually be considered just quiet when with other people, but they are so shy with each other it's adorable.
I would have to say i'm a 5-6 depending. If i'm already involved with a conversation i'm okay, but its just the whole process of getting involved that invokes my shyness.

This is kind of an exception, but I'll say Yuki Nagato from the film The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. In the series, yeah she's quiet, but not really shy. In the film, however, it flips. Nagato rules.
On that scale, I'm probably less than five, but in terms of being a quiet person (which isn't the same) I'm around a 7 or 8. I'll talk to people and won't blush sparkles and bubbles whenever I do, but I prefer to keep to myself for the most part. Remember, don't confuse the quiet person with the shy person! And here I'm thinking of Yozora Mikazuki from Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, definitely not a shy girl.
I can't pick favourites because I love so many shy characters! ;w;
However, one that really comes to mind for me is Lag. Tegami Bachi is my favourite manga, and he's so adorable that I could just eat him up. q U q Shiemi from Ao no Exorcist as well as Chii from Chobits are also on my top list. C':
As for me, there are situations where I'd be 100 on the shyness scale. 8| However, for the most part, I'm not so awkward that I can't make a conversation on a regular basis. So maybe a 6 or 7. xD
Mihashi from Oofuri, hands down. <3 I love him and his adorable shyness. Always had a lack of self-confidence, even though he has such great skill in pitching...but because of his experiences, he becomes more timid and such. I love how he interacts with Abe. So cute and innocent and shy. He will always be one of my favorite anime charas ever, and of course, a shy one as well.
My shyness...I am trying to get over it, but I would say an 8 or 9. I'm definitely not as shy online as I am in person though. Socializing is not my strong suit. >>
Ninamori Eri from Fooly Cooly!! Is she considered shy? Well I would probably be at a 5. But it's situational based. I'm not so good in group based situations though, so maybe higher there. Hehe, I love anime!

If Natsume Takashi from Natsume Yuujinchou counts as a shy character, then it's definitely him. I'm also actually quite fond of Shinji Ikari. Forget the haters! :P
I myself am probably a 7. It kind of depends. There are some people who, from my very first conversation with them, I already feel like I can relax. And there are many others who I still don't feel comfortable around even after my tenth interaction with them. ^^;
man, someone else said "Kisa"...I agree though!
she is really cute...</3
I don't think I ever noticed how little shy people show up in Western shows and other media. that really is something to think about.
my shyness is probably only a 3 or so. I willingly engage in conversation of all types. but I refrain from just all the sudden starting one

Mine is Hinata from Naruto
... And my Shyness level is a solid 8-9... I don't like starting conversations, I am afraid that by talking I make people mad and I'm very hesitant to make friends in general...
For me, Sawako from KnT. Mostly because she's first in mind.
She's a good person who's motto is "1 good deed a day." she tries her best to be social ad break down prejudices she faces. Not only that, but she tries to get her feelings across for her friends too. I also like her optimism and innocence.
I'm not really shy, tho people seem to think that. I just have problems like anyone else.

Another vote for Hinata from "Naruto"! :D Sawako from "Kimi ni Todoke" is another one I like a lot. I just love their sweet personalities. *^^*
Shy guys are a little harder... I'm gonna say Lag from "Letter Bee." ^^ (Though Ryoshi from "Okami-san" with his fear of being stared at is hilarious!) Again, he's got a heart of gold -- I just love those type of innocent characters!
My shyness scale: 6 or 7 -- depends on the situation. ^^'
I know virtually EVERYONE is going to say this, but I vote for Hinata from "Naruto". She instantly comes to mind.
Another introvert that I'm a fan of is Hotaru from "Sailor Moon". At least I think she's an introvert. It's been a while since I watched the series.
As for me, I'm pretty introverted myself. Those who know me online probably couldn't figure that out. Then again, I spend so much time online because I have trouble interacting with people face-to-face.
I was also thinking about my original characters. Pretty much all of my lead female characters are shy. I guess some of my male characters are a bit shy, too. But it's mostly the females. I don't know how it turned out that way.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!

BOUNCE!
