As much as I love Jackie Chan, to me this is yet another example of how Hollywood has lost its imagination and has trouble coming up with something new. I know there is a "new generation" out there that the story would appeal to, but c'mon, the original is not that bad. I think that the original would be all right for now even if it's 20+ years old. I watch old movies quite a bit and don't have the feeling that they need to be updated/remade/whatever.
Maybe this version will have lots of explosions. That seems to be the thing that all these remakes have in common....
It's not so much that the Chinese-Japanese stuff confuses me (heh, if it did then I'll have failed as an Asian-Canadian myself). I mean, if they really wanna portray Karate and a Chinese actor as a Japanese master, that's fine and Chan shouldn't have too much of a problem portraying decent karate techniques with some practice.
'Sides, Chan actually speaks (and sings) in Japanese, so hey.
My main concern is if they take an angle of Japanese "anything" kicking ass in mainland China, given that little bit of history 60 years ago where that did happen to rather unfortunate end.
Wait, the story's set actually in China? Why China; is the kid a diplomat's son or something; I am going to require a credible reason for his being there. Admittedly, I went to China in high school on a spring break trip, but I went to high school in Korea so it wasn't as much of a jump. As far as Jackie Chan playing the other lead role, at least we have someone with serious martial arts experience (as opposed, say, to Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li in the upcoming Street Fighter.)
It would be nice if Hollywood would write something original, it seems that almost everything coming out anymore is a book adaptation, remake or continuation of something.
as for this movie, I don't see it being worth the 12 bucks to watch it in a theater.
Yeah, as a martial artist myself, all this China-Japan stuff is starting to confuse the crap out of me, too. Makes me wonder why they don't seem to think that Will Smith's son and Jackie Chan have enough draw as it is. They could easily just rename it "Kung-Fu Kid" and draw just as many people without potentially souring some fond memories in the process.

You should only remake movies to make things better, right? The other one isn't broken. Nothing personal agaist the Smith kid or agaist Jackie Chan... I just don't see the need. And the plot line is getting too screwy for me.
If there's nothing wrong with me, then there must be something wrong with the universe!
Alright . . . I'm seeing a lot of potential for some complicated explaining . . .
Movie's set in China rather than America now. Okay, sure, it's not like no one in China does Karate - you could make for a neat story about a foreigner going against the grain in every way possible, alright, there's a potential story in that.
Once you get into the realm of Chinese guy playing Japanese guy teaching Japanese arts to American in China . . . well, I worry that the story may (unintentionally or not) take a kind of "Japan comes to China and cleans house" angle that might be very, very problematic for a lot of people.
Still too early to say, and this is all speculation, but yeah . . . we'll say I sense possible yellow flags going up.

Well......it's guarenteed to have humor in it. ^^;
Time to drop the other shoe: I still don't make much of this remake.

The man has experience and acting under his belt. To say he's not qualified would require some good arguments.
