In a way, this whole thing reminds me when Sailor Moon was being dubbed and licensed through DiC back in the 90's. They changed so much to the series which I learned later on and also didn't air episodes that the staff felt were either too violent or didn't relate to the main storyline.
The one thing that bugged me the most was that they tried to change it so that the story took place somewhere in the U.S. instead of Japan going so far as to flipping scenes that were on the street so that the cars were on the right side and such.
But case in point, the viewers are not stupid. To do well, you have to do research to know what you'll be getting into ('cause the viewers will let you know where you screwed up and it won't be pretty).
Any company that tries to gain viewers by completely changing a show and then adding rap songs should go down. I know their demographic is mainly elementary school kids, but you can only go so far. If they want to get out of this, they better start doing research on shows they license so that they don't mess things up.
I hope that should 4Kids continues to lose money, someone will take over for production for future animated episodes of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", even though the Ninja Turtles first starred in comics.
Sure it serves 4Kids right for what it did to Anime, but this still could qualify as tragedy for the amazing original U.S. kids' shows it makes, including its animated adaptaion of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", which is still a hit with viewers of all ages (kids and adults).
I agree that this is no more than they deserve...but...how many anime series will we lose in the process? Well... I suppose there will still be dubbed series...
4Kids Entertainment, in my opinion, needs to go the way of the dodo bird. Then they need to sit, think, get some intelligent feedback from fans other than "YOU SUCK!" and try to improve.
If a company like Funi can do better work. And hell, even Viz and the Ocean Group are getting better. 4Kids seems stuck in the mud, unwilling to try and win back some fans.
I think its a shame, they killed some good series. A lot of has to do with poor research into a show before they license it. If they watched 10 episodes of One Piece, they would never have touched it in the first place.
I could be completely off my rocker, it wouldnt be the first time.
In regards to the voice thing, 4Kids did have a few good VAs on that show. Zoro, Nami, Chopper and most of the villains were well noted for having surprisingly non-horrid voices.
But they gave Sanji a nasally faux Bronx accent. And for that they must pay.

ha, @chibihanyou, anime SHOULD be for kids, don't you know that anime like, one piece and naruto, is uncensored in Japan? xD (Of course, they're the ones that made it XP) Anime, in general, is made for all ages. I don't know if there are many other countries that leave it uncensored though but there should be some in the East. Our Western audiences, as Demonking pointed out, have tougher restrictions on what's good for kids to watch and what's not. It's the whole issue revolving around "bad influences" from too much watching too much "violence nudity" on tv.
Also, someone may throw tomatoes at me, like meh buddies from yahoo and chat, but I also preferred the original voices in one piece when I first saw it xD *shot* So I agree with haseo too LOL

Whoa now. While a lot of anime are targeted to an older audience in the West, most shows and manga like Naruto and One Piece were targeted to a young audience.
I think good examples of what is, by the American standards, kids anime is Hamtaro and Pokemon.
I hate to be a stickler, but Digimon was Saban Entertainment (at least the first three and most awesome seasons were). It still wasn't dubbing gold, but it wasn't 4Kids. Shame the beginning of Pokemon was actually tolerable, you know?
Maybe they'd be doing the anime world and the animes as well a favor by going out of business. They edit so much crap out of the shows its amazing how they manage to keep the shows around 25 mins still...
I agree with Aceburner; It's a shame though that a lot of jobs are being lost, but they're doing it to themselves by delivering bad dubs >>;
Anime shouldn't be FOR KIDS anyway...leave it to older teens...

It's true. But in all honesty, I think that what they try to do for animes isn't a bad concept. Alot of what I started off with as a child came from 4kids; Pokemon, Digimon, ect. So I can't help but feel a little sad as well.
(Is it bad to think that I actually prefered Chopper's, Zorro's, and Nami's voice from 4kids over Funi's? Cause I did...lol)
The problem is that they don't learn. At least FUNimation has improved a lot since their early days of Dragonball Z. One Piece's failure at 4Kids' hands taught them nothing about good dubbing, and their original shows are more or less barely passable. That's why they're losing money.
I'm not completely happy about this, since they're cutting their losses and a lot of jobs are being lost here, but I'd prefer it happens to a company that consistently produces subpar entertainment.
Hm...Who'd a thought. But I guess now, no matter what they try, people are always going to look at them in a bad light. Not saying it's right, but still...yah...all I have to say is, poor poor shaman king...
It's been deteriorating for a long time...I wonder why? Well, they can't be suckish! They've got masterpiece shows like Chaotix, Dinosaur King, and Kamen Rider!!! With their intricate plots, engaging characters, and breathtaking cinematography, it's hard to believe that people hate 4Kids!!! Why aren't the kids watching?!
