Would it make PETA happy if W.o.W. just put a "No real animals were harmed in the making of this virtual apparition" message at the beginning of the game? But that's kind of obvious. It's freakin' virtual.
It is too extreme. Have they not heard of free-range eggs? Personally i'd be happy to eat free-range ckicken so long as it is killed humanely [yes, I know people complain that that isn't possible].
Heh, I haven't had a PETA/vegetarian/animal rights discussion at 2am for a while XD tis fun ^^ although I am sleepy and i'm gonna go to bed soon.
As for the environment, well meat is damaging in all kinds of different ways. First off, if the waste from abbotoirs isn't correctly disposed of it can cause a health hazzard. Food for animals reared for meat is often grain based -- which needs high quantities of fertiliser, water and pesticides to grow. Rearing animals for meat uses far more energy than is actually given in the food itself.
I think there were worries about hormones being in Milk, but I don't know much about that - besides, that is a health problem, not an environmental one as such. Soya also can cause the same effects, I think it has levels of oestrogen in... Or something. Anyway, too much soya isn't good apparently - unless it has been fermented, like tofu.
Transporting animals/animal products uses a lot of fuel [so increases climate change]. Animal production is one of the biggest contributors to climate change, well, the food industry itself is rather. Plus some animals produce a large ammount of methane, again this can add to the climate change arguement.
I think it is the WAY animals are farmed, and the sheer volume of animals reared for meat that is the problem. Some countries cut down rain-forest to raise cattle, but the land becomes degraded and un-fertile within a few years, so more land has to be cleared... BUT the same can be said of soya farmers... So it is a tricky thing.
If you want me to waffle at you for longer [which I doubt XD] you can send me a PM or something. I just splurged what was on the top of my head at you, so sorry about that... But it was nice to discuss this. Tis nice to know someone cares - but also thinks PETA is a little mad ^^
Mmm I just read your post in your world about the dogs. I can see PETA's point though, I mean after all those poor dogs went through I can see how people would be worried they'd snap and attack things. I mean, my friend had the most lovely dog, he was a border-collie and he was so friendly. But one day after they had recently moved house he just went nuts and lunged at my friends face and ripped into her cheek... Her family decided he should be put down. [I disagree though...]
I think the point PETA was making was fair enough, because if something HAD happened then I guess they'd feel somewhat responsible. Having said that, I am glad that most of the dogs weren't put down because they all deserve so much better than the horrendous way they were treated.
Regarding the environment issue, eating meat IS one of the most environmentally destructive things people do. Never mind what PETA says i've researched it myself.
I think if people stop eating meat then that won't neccessarily halt the problem. There are always people who ARE going to eat meat, and the number of people who do eat meat is increasing -- especially as nations become more 'developed'. If you are veggie then at least you can know you aren't part of the problem ^^
PETA just seems a little crazy sometimes, but i'm sure their heart is in the right place.
I've had many debates/discussions about this with a friend of mine. I'd swear he'd go vegan if he wasn't so addicted to cheese and pizza XD
I just think people should treat the world and what is in it with more respect -- that includes the seals AND people who enjoy a bacon sarnie every once in a while ^^
PETA does have odd methods though. A friend of mine told me about one of PETA's myspace bullitin-thingees recently. They were asking people to email Iraqi officials to ask them not to kill stray dogs in Baghdad. Now, while I don't like the idea of animals suffering, this was apparently being carried out by government vets, so the animals must have been causing a problem. Perhaps they had rabies or something.
I would have thought the Iraqi government have other important issues to attend to. I mean, well done PETA for highlighting where things perhaps could be done in a better way, but I do think that PETA could do with seeing the bigger picture sometimes.
Rant over ^^ sorry, I got a little carried away there...
Yeah, at one point you get to saddle up a mammoth and trample all the hunters. The final elite guy you have to kill at the end of the quest chains sets down traps to trap you, and then throws bear pelts at you, but you have a horn that can summon various mammoths, rhinos and elk to trample him.
Raid Boss (Otaku Eternal) | Posted 04/15/09 | Reply
Funnily enough, they missed the whole series of quests in the OTHER Northrend starting Zone, Borean Tundra, where you join an organization called D.E.H.T.A (Druids for the Ethnical and Humane Treatment of Animals), and do quests for them, including freeing baby mammoths, killing hunters and taking their ears to turn for reputation, trapping trappers in their own traps until finally at the end of all these quests you get an achievement called "D.E.H.T.A's little P.I.T.A".
I'd say Blizz has already dealt with it.
Also, if you kill an innocent animal in the Borean Tundra (even the ones that try to kill you first), you get a debuff that is a picture of a baby seal called "Animal's Blood" or something, which turns you red for three minutes. If you try to run into the DEHTA camp like that, the druids all attack and kill you, screaming insults like "Do you think us fools! You're covered in animal blood!" and "Calf killer! Murderer! You will pay for this!"

Second random fact: seal hunting is apparently not nearly as fun as they make it out to be. You have to be out walking on ice flows that could break off at any moment, you have to nail the seal directly in the head and crush its skull so as to obtain as humane-as-possible instantaneous death, and if you screw it up you'll get angry people telling you how ur doin it rong. Still, I suppose when your clubs is called a "hakapik", well, I suppose that in itself is slightly inherently fun . . .
. . . yeah, I've read up on this one a lot before. And I think I'll join you in the stopping before mauling.
Random fact: Canada's had a ban on the hunting of baby seals for over 20 years now. Babies just don't have the meat/oil/leather to be worth it. I mean, along with the fact that wearing a baby seal coat would be frowned upon in general.
PETA is over the top, but they have their reasons. And I do agree with some things they say, even though I find their methods irritating at times. But this WOW thing is just another way of getting attention to a new audience, if it does something good then that's fine by me.
However you look at things, eating meat IS bad for the planet, at least in the volumes people eat it today. I've researched this myself at uni, so I know a little about it. I think they'd do better to encourage less consumption of meat though, rather than this 'meat eaters are evil and cruel' stuff though.
Die before I wake has touched on most of the issues, but here's my thing.
I'm a "red neck" girl if you will, I've grown up with woods in my back yard and a fishing rod in my hand. I see nothing wrong with fishing or hunting as long as when you kill the animal, you eat it and thank/bless it for whatever, even if you're not relgious, thank for the food.
Peta to me, is a radicalistic organization that makes all humans out to be evil creatures hell bent on destroying everything. But think about it this way, if we were to suddenly stop eating animals, if every human stopped eating animals, that would destroy the balance of of our ecosystem.
And for Christ's sake, it's a *bleeping* game. A FRIGGEN PIXALATED COMPUTER GENERATED GOD FORSAKEN GAME!
After the whole "sea kitten" thing, Peta just keeps making itself look dumber and dumber and they really have been losing support.
Eh, the way I see it, is you need people like this. You have the crazy insane people that are all for killing everything, and being cruel to animals, so you need the people that are all for not killing anything.
And besides, there are way more of the insane all for killing, so I say sure, go for it PETA. We need the diversity of thinking in this world.
I find my thoughts on the ACTUAL Canadian seal hunt are rather curious and I wouldn't recommend them for everyone. Still, that this was the best PETA could to to respond to it...
"Anyone who slaughters baby seals for their fur must surely be in service to the evil Lich King,"
That's exactly the kind of slanderous lies the bottom-feeders of the Alliance would say! FOR THE HORDE!!!
@Allamorph:
I'm sure most of the people who were there did it for a laugh. The leader says "What do we want?" and some say "Animal freedom!" while others say "Meat, a new shotgun and beer!" I would pay to see that
