He might if he is desperate enough to get out of Disney. And as for the Joker, true, people didn't know if he could pull off that particular role, but he had already proven his skill as an actor many times before that cast. We already knew he was very good. Efron, on the other hand, hasn't really proven anything. Yah, maybe because he hasn't gotten the chance, but maybe because he was trained by Disney. I don't know what that place does to their child actors, but it's a career killer.
Yah, he has the hair, but that's also a concern. I'm hoping they know exactly what they're casting for and not just going for look alikes. Light is going to be difficult role, and if this is the case, I feel bad for whoever gets thrown L without knowing what they're getting into. Plus, (and I know it's not that important) he's got a baby face. Too chubby, and I just can't picture him as coming across as intelligent as Light is supposed to.
Well, and I thought of another reason why it can't suck as bad as the DBZ movie, because Warner Bros is doing it, not some small company. If they did it, I'm sure they won't disgrace it, especially with how anime is doing now and the face that more and more animes are being adapted to live action films.
I heard that it was between Ben Stiller and Zac Effron to play Light. As much as I hate Zac I think that he is a btter match...As long as the movie has a cast that looks similar to the manga cast and it has an interesting plot, then I'm Okay.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, you know, I don't think this will be that bad. I love both Death Note and Warner Bros. So I'm going to give this a chance.
Plus, if any of the rumors I've heard are true, and if there's ANY chance at all that Zac Efron is going to play Light, I'm going to be up first in line to see this XD
Honestly, this is one anime I don't think they will screw up. Why? Because there isn't giant blue beams of destruction coming from people's hands (ring a bell anyone?). I'm actually really excited about this, I think this might be the movie to bring America into NOT killing animes.
On the Zack Efron note, I have to say, while I'm not the biggest fan of him, I have earned some form of respect for him after reading an interview from him. Apparently he was noted as being the "weird" kid at school, and really didn't get around as well as people may think he did. Also, apparently he does enjoy some anime, which is a plus in my book, so I think it would be interesting to see him play as Light.
Now, if they get an ugly person to play L, all of hell will break loose and I might just kill the person that would cast him...
But seriously, even the Japanese made the Death Note into a great movie, and we all know how the Japanese make movies *cough they suck cough* (even my friend who's half Japanese admits this openly), so there should be no problem.
How I've tried, this desire to hide,
a crime of force I want to commit,
It's hard to see why such a regular guy,
would have this secret to admit...
Now you're done, your name I've found...
"I really want to mug somebody..."
*gasps*
"The feeling of power over someone else, the thrill of the action, I can't get enough!"
Not another souuuuund!
"It's not like I want to kill them..."
No no no no!
No no nooooo, don't pretend I won't kno-o-ooow,
If you cause someone pain, I'll just write down your name,
And then way down to hell you'll go-o-o...
I'm GOD of the WORLD, you knooooow...
Based on the anime and manga, I think that Death Note would be an easier adaptation for Warner Bros. Remember that it'll take time before the script, director, cast and everything else are developed. Only then can we judge and decide if it'll do well (even though it's hard due a certain movie's recent crash and burn in the theaters).
Though I must admit.. Zac Efron does have Light's looks. And as some were saying earlier, it's an actor's job (more like a necessity) to be able to adapt to various roles and such. If Efron does get cast as Light, I'm sure he'll have grown as an actor by then and be able to pull it off.
It also wouldn't hurt to have a director who knows what the heck he's/she's doing, also.. =D
I'm just going to hope with all my might that this does not turn out to be the epic failure that was Dragonball Evolution. Please let this turn out good.
On another note, I found another live action film in the making. Well, maybe. According to IMDB.com, where they already have a page for it, Saint Seiya will be made into a live action movie. Not sure if it's true or not, but since they already have the page for it....
Hmm...Zac Efron could pull it off, but I'm concerned who L is going to be played by. Other than that, I have no qualms about it! Buuuut...I'm holding a spot in the "Anti-Suckage" bombshelter, just in case.
I'd like to point out to everyone that is protesting on the basis of "it's live action it will suck" that Death Note already has two Japanese live-action adaptations that, if I recall, were very well-received by the fanbase.
And the Zac Efron thing was a half-troll, but you gotta admit he has the look.
So the previous news about a different film production acquiring the rights to Death Note was actually a rumor, huh?
Well, I'm not shocked Warner Bros. was the one who got it. I just hope that they make the adaptation a decent and respectful one. And since it's Warner Bros., I'm not expecting Zac Efron to be Light. It would be good if they have a serious audition for Light and pick the very best actor to play the role in terms of ability and not popularity.
What a coincidence. I did a post about this yesterday in one of my WORLDs.
I predict that this movie will be as succesful in the box office as any of the bloody horror films Holywood made so far, like "Scream".
My reminder to all you Anime fans out there: keep in mind that this movie will have its own continuity, separate from the Manga's own, and like any Manga-based/Anime-based U.S. film, this one's meant to be a fun treat for all the Anime/Manga fans living in North America, seeing that the makers of actual Anime/Manga themselves only consider Japanese viewers/readers as their target audiences, just like U.S. films target U.S. people. So be happy for goodness sake!
Also, note that all filmmakers worldwide (counting Japanese and Americans) have their kind of talent when it comes to adapting an animated work or a comic book into a live-action movie for the fans.

Isn't there already a live-action Death Note...? And wasn't it already shown in the States...?
Well anyways, I think America can pull off a live-action Death Note pretty well. I mean, we do blood and gore pretty well, the storyline's already written out so we don't have to worry about originality, and unless they cast a puppet as Ryuk, there's not much special effects to screw up.
That said, I think I'm going to start a petition to cast Efron as Light. :D
If they make a live action Death Note movie, they are going to butcher it SO badly. Warner Bros. is smart to invest in anime, however, not in THAT type. I know it would fail, I just KNOW it.
Good point--and I loved Heath as the Joker. I just hate HSM so, I guess that's just seeping into how I would think of Zac as Light. [shrugs] Ignore me and my hating on HSM.
That's the point where you need to start trusting in your actors. Would you have expected the Joker to start snogging Batman in the interrogation room (keeping with my prior example)? No, because actors play different characters and just because one character lives in a universe where people spontaneously break out into song doesn't mean all the other roles the actor will take will.
I watched Shia Lebouf when he was on Disney Channel and Even Stevens, yet I trust him to not play slapstick little brother when in a serious role nowadays. Actors are people and people mature. Give the boy a break.
May I please take pictures and giggle at said protest...? I promise I won't throw my popcorn at you.
You know, 'cause frankly... if the boy wants to become a serious actor and not the puppet of screaming twelve-year-old fangirls, playing Light Yagami is a perfect fit. I mean, I don't like Death Note at all, nor am I very fond of Efron or anything he has been in as of late, but I believe that the kind of role Light would offer would do wonders for the boy's credibility levels. You would be surprised what kind of performances actors can give when put into certain situations. Heath Ledger as the Joker ring a bell? People were royally irked when the man was originally casted, due to his involvement in roles such as in the infamous Brokeback Mountain; now people regard his performance in The Dark Knight as one of the best.
...besides, Efron already has the hair. You cannot deny the hair. :D
Oh, please, no. I was so hoping that was just a rumor. They're going to kill it! And, NO! Efron can not pull off Light. That is just sick. He's not even that good of an actor. Ugh... I don't know if I'll go see it. I might cry. They're either going to try to turn it into a horror film, or make it all Efron-y....XP
I know there is a petition for Matsuyama to play L again, but I don't think his english is good enough.
And we were gonna do DN down the road, we have the PERFECT Light picked out, and he should be just the right age when we get there.
