"I think that cover is timeless, symbolic, and doesnt have to change with each re-release in order to keep up with the times or attract new fans... I highly doubt that the cover art will turn anyone away from buying the movie though. It's like the saying goes "If it isnt broke, dont fix it" :)"

seriously, if you don't like it, print out your own cover. Course, if anime fans "can't be bothered" to buy DVDs of the series they've been downloading for years, I hardly see how they're going to be able to afford a Blu Ray player...
In my opinion, the cover would look nice if it was a modified version of the old Streamline Pictures VHS cover for the film (the one showing Kaneda standing on a futuristic city) with the background showing a large depiction of Tetsuo.
I personally think the artwork is just fine as well. I think the image of Kaneda walking towards his motorcycle - is the image everyone percieves when they think of the movie. I think that cover is timeless, symbolic, and doesnt have to change with each re-release in order to keep up with the times or attract new fans. I can understand how some older anime fans who are all too familiar with Akira, would be somewhat dissatisfied that the Blu-ray release doesnt have a different cover associated with it. I do like the idea of a reversible cover though, and/or alternate covered copies wouldnt be a bad idea either (even if it is just a limited amount). I highly doubt that the cover art will turn anyone away from buying the movie though. It's like the saying goes "If it isnt broke, dont fix it" :)
Indeed, this is the now very familiar artwork that many Akira fans know. Rather than having a completely different cover, it would be nice to have a reversible cover--one picture on each side.
It seems that this artwork is one of those classics that has a fair amount of respect in professional art-circles. This is a piece, after all, that inspired someone like Naruto's creator Masashi Kishimoto; you can still see the influence of this piece in his work.
Personally, I think that artwork is a great setup piece for the anime. However, a reversable cover would be nice.
